3 PREFACE Indonesia, which is the largest archipelago in the world, is an example of a nation with unity in diversity. It consists of five major islands and about 30 smaller groups. The figure for the total number of islands is 17,508 according to the Indonesian Naval Hydro Oceanographic office. The Indonesian people consist of 490 different ethnics living together, with each group having distinct language, architecture, handicraft, textiles, dances, art, tradition and custom. Those ethnic groups politically and geographically united into a nation, under the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia, with Pancasila as its state philosophy. It makes Indonesian become proud of being an Indonesian. Instead of diversity in culture and tradition, Indonesia also has a lot of beautiful and unique places to visit. Each place has its different and unique culture and tradition as patrimony from our ancestors and blessings from Almighty God. The difference with Indonesian Culture Exhibition (ICE) 2006 and 2007, this year we are very proud to present the same event with theme Indonesia Arise and Shine in three days series: Indonesian movie show, angklung and sajojo dance workshop, the ultimate is performance from March 11 13, The ICE 2008 is presented as one of the Indonesian Student Association activities, in which all the participants can show the traditional dances, music, handicrafts, clothes and delicious foods. 4 INDONESIAN MOVIE SHOW NAGABONAR JADI 2 (2007) IB 202 MARCH 11 th, Nagabonar Jadi 2 (Nagabonar Become Two) is a comedy movie starring Nagabonar and Bonaga as father and son. The stories revolve around the relationship between the now old Nagabonar, a pickpocket who became a self proclaimed general during Indonesia's war for independence, and his only foreign educated son, Bonaga. The movie touches on various subjects concerning the different views of the older generation and the younger, post modern generation of Indonesia. These subjects include patriotism, traditional values, and love. The script is filled with dialogues that are funny, smart, and satirical without becoming offensive. Conflict and hilarity ensues when Bonaga tell his father the plan to sell their old palm plantation, where his mother and grandmother are buried. Nagabonar opposes the idea, then just when it seems like he might change his mind, he finds out that his son s investors are Japanese. He falls into a deep emotional trap. On the one hand, he tries hard to understand the gap between his generation and his son s. On the other hand, he still has bad feelings toward the Japanese. DENIAS SENANDUNG DI ATAS AWAN (2006) IB 202 MARCH 11 th, Denias Senandung di Atas Awan ( Denias singing on the cloud ) is one of good movies produced by Indonesian producers. On November 13, 2007, the movie won the Asia Pacific Screen Awards for the best Children Feature. The story based one a true story is about one boy named Denias living in Papua, one quite big island in Indonesia, located in the eastern part of the archipelago. The island has one so called biggest gold mining company in the world, the Freeport. However, it doesn t mean that the native people there live wealthily. Denias used to live in one poor village located in island and the villagers still practice the ritual ceremonies from their ancestors. To keep schooling, Denias leaves the house. Despite very far and many of barriers, Denias continues to pursue his dream. There, Denias struggle is not finished yet, as a common ethnic child, Denias is not able to go to public school. His encounter with Enos makes Denias could enter the schoolyard and make an effort to reap knowledge by his own way. Could Denias go to school again? 5 CULTURE EXHIBITION IB 1 st FLOOR MARCH th, The culture exhibition presents various handicrafts, traditional house models, clothes, weapons and music instruments of different places in Indonesia. The exhibition sequence is designed as five parts that represents the biggest islands, Sumatera, Jawa, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Papua. The visitors also can freely taste klepon (traditional food from Indonesia) at March 13, 2008 from until Visitors can see the varieties of Indonesian cultures such as batik, traditional Java garments with various colors and reliefs. Batik can be weared by men or women, especially for women batik could be matched with kebaya. Rencong, traditional weapon from Aceh made by iron and usually written Qurán. Tongkonan, traditional house in Toraja, South Sulawesi. In front of this house there are some bones of cows as symbol that the owner has held big death ceremonial many times. Koteka, traditional worn by native male inhabitants of some (mainly highland) ethnic groups in Papua to cover their genitals. They are normally made from a dried out gourd. They are held in place by a small loop of fiber attached to the base of the koteka and placed around the scrotum. ANGKLUNG WORKSHOP IB 202 MARCH 12 th, In this workshop, all the participants will 1. 6 TRADITIONAL ART PERFORMANCE IB 1 st FLOOR MARCH 13 th, Gambyong Classical Central Javanese female dance usually performed to greet guests at the opening of an auspicious ceremony or performance. It depicts a young woman who has reached the age that she is conscious of her looks and enjoys making herself up in front of the mirror, in adorning herself and showing off her beauty, litheness and grace. Remo Remo Dance is perfomed to welcome guests and therefore it is called a welcoming dance. The characteristic movements of the Remo Dance are the beats of the feet. Beside the beats of the feet, the manipulative play of the selendang or sampur, the facial expressions, and the postures of the dancers which conform the rhythm of the music, make this dance unique. Saman The most popular dance in Aceh has become well-known abroad with the name "thousand hands". Ten or more male performers kneel in a row on the floor and make different kinds of torso movements accompanied by songs, clapping hands, slapping chests, and slapping hands on the floor. The dance starts with slow movements and increases its tempo gradually to great speed and finally come to a sudden stop. Rebana Rebana is a classification of percussion music instruments based on the process of producing the sounds by vibrating the body of the instrument. This instrument classification was existed thousands of years ago naturally Tortor Pencak Silat The steps are simpler, holding the palms together and moving is up and down. Then later palms apart and blessing over the dancer's head. It is a common practice to give a money into the hands of the welcoming host as a symbol of returning your goodwill and blessings. Toba Bataks still perform the tortor dance, which celebrates a gift exchange for a wedding. Pencak silat is the official name used to indicate more than 800 martial arts schools and styles spread across more than 13,000 islands in Indonesia. There is no overall standard for Pencak Silat. Each style has its own particular movement patterns, specially designed techniques and tactical rationale. The richness of terms reflects a wide diversity in styles across the regions. 7 Satrio Utomo The dance tells a story of a young man practicing martial art and the dancers use Keris (Java Traditional Weapon) during this dance Sajojo Sajojo have a happy character with the jump-bend-jump-bend, and it starts with the left foot. Besides being popular through the military, this dance also executed as different variation in health workshops with movements that are more dynamic because the accompanying music is regular. Campur Sari Campur sari is traditional java music which is accompanied by special instrument like gamelan, gending, and langgam jawa Kecak Kecak is a form of Balinese music drama and is performed primarily by men. It is performed by a circle performers wearing checked cloth around their waists, percussively chanting "cak" and throwing up their arms, depicts a battle from the Ramayana where monkeys help Prince Rama fight the evil King Ravana. Angklung A musical instrument made out of two bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo frame. The tubes are carved so that they have a resonant pitch when struck. The two tubes are tuned to octaves. The base of the frame is held with one hand while the other hand shakes the instrument rapidly from side to side. This causes a rapidly repeating note to sound.
