Dues: $15 Single / $25 Couple tntharley.com Copyright 2007 River Roads HOG Chapter 0912 All Rights Reserved Hello, From the Director s Saddle Harlan Clampitt Sooner or later in life's journey, something happens to a relative or close friend that reminds all of us that we are on this planet for a limited time only. The length of time depends on many factors, heredity, life styles, etc. During this limited engagement, a lot of us settle into a state of complacency, a numbness, so to speak, of daily routines starting Monday when the alarm clock goes off and each day is the same for the rest of the week. We wear drab clothing, drive bland, un-inspiring cars, trucks and mini-vans to the same jobs, doing the same boring tasks day-after-dayafter-day. Excitement for some is buying an x-box for the 50 inch plasma TV in the media room. Well, knock your socks off! There actually is a small percentage of the populace that truly enjoys breathing every breath they take, watching the sun rise in the morning There is more information elsewhere in this Newsletter about LuAnn s accident, but please keep her in your prayers and send her cards so that she knows you are thinking about her. This accident has made me realize that no matter how careful and defensive your driving is, that accidents do happen. As we all know, there is no one and set at night, being a little daring at times, driving 35 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed zone, putting wider tires and racing wheels on the mini-van, and, yes, God forbid, riding a motorcycle to work. Now here's the best part of the daily grind, riding your Harley-Davidson to work!! Gee, then all of a sudden, you decide to ride to grandma s house on a Sunday afternoon, and even taking the long way home. Then, what the heck, let's go Ladies of Harley Debbie Powell - LOH Officer LADIES OF HARLEY more careful and aware than LuAnn. By the time you all read this, the J & P Cycle ride will have happened with the day s activities reported in the next newsletter. to Colorado to see Uncle Mike, and then take the long way home. Gee, wouldn't it be fun to ride a thousand miles in a day, why not?? And why not share these memories with your boring friends in their media rooms? I guess the point to this rambling is to enjoy every day we have on this planet by cherishing our friends and living every day to the fullest, even if the neighbors think you're crazy. Many of us here in the River Roads Chapter feel the same way about the journeys we take and the close friends we make along the way. Let's not forget those that helped us escape that boring day-to-day routine by keeping in touch and helping those that do hit a bump in the road, because we here at River Roads are a family of sorts, so take care of each other, because time is the enemy See ya on the road. Harlan This report is short because Dennis and I have been helping plan funeral arrangements for his mother. Please keep our family in your prayers as well. Ride Safely, Debbie Editors Note: Naomi Powell passed away on June 16. Services were held June 20 at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home, Quincy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may still be made to Hospice.

Let s get the bikes shined up and out on the road before fall gets here again. We had a nice sized group ride over to Danville, IL for the Illinois HOG rally. The rides over and back went well. We enjoyed the rally for the most part although it seemed very short. We couldn t do everything there was to do or watch. Several went on the covered bridge tour on Saturday. It was great and we saw some out of the way places. We toured two bridges, road through one bridge and road past a couple of more. The ride was close to 100 miles long, one group had about 70 bikes and the other group had about 166 bikes. If we ever get a HOG rally in Quincy area again maybe a conducted tour would be a good idea. Our Chapter Ride to northern Arkansas will leave Fri, July 6 from TNT at 7:30 AM with a stop in Hannibal at Parson s gas station on south US 61 to pick up any Hannibal area riders. We will pick up riders at Perry Junction and make a fuel stop in Kingdom City. The next stop will be lunch in Lake of the Ozarks, gas stop in Buffalo and last gas stop outside of Branson. We can stop at the Harley Store in Lake of Ozarks on the way back because it is hard to get back on the highway going west from there. If you haven t called Rider s Rest ( ) to reserve a room, please do so ASAP. If we fill all the rooms there, we will try to get more rooms elsewhere. I have planned a ride to the Lincoln Library/Museum in Springfield, IL on July 15. It would be a good ride for anyone, wife, kids, and grandpa. After checking out the Library/Museum we can go to one of the great places to eat over there. We will meet at the Village Inn in Quincy for breakfast at 7:30 AM and leave from there after we eat (about 8:30 or so). We plan to meet the Pike County members at the Pittsfield I- 72 exit and Jacksonville members at the south Jacksonville I-72 exit when we stop for gas. There is an admission fee of $7.50 for adults (16-61) and $5.50 for adults 62 & older for the museum. The library is free. It looks like there may be a parking fee of.50 too. The fee includes a brief theater presentation that I am told is really good.

Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Illinois will now be known as Region 8 (Missouri and Illinois used to be in Region 3). Leah Whaley has accepted the position of HOG Regional Manager for Region 8. Leah has been with the Motor Company since 2000 and has worked as Event Coordinator, Road Scholar and Marketing Event Coordinator. She brings a wealth of Chapter operations having served as Director of the Pierre, SD Chapter. Leah also served as Site Coordinator for the South Dakota HOG Rally in 1999 and 2000 and has been a POT instructor for several years. Leah began training for her new role in mid-june by jobshadowing other Regional Managers for 8-10 weeks. Paul Raap continues as Regional Manager for Region 3 which now includes North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. The Missouri State HOG Rally in St. Joseph (Sept 7-8) will be an excellent time to meet and greet the new Region 8 Regional Manager. What s Happening at the Store MDA/H-D Party MDA will hold a special Rally at the KC Factory Sept 7-8 in conjunction with the Annual KC Factory Open House and the MO State HOG Rally in St. Jos e p h ( w w w. h e a r t l a n d - hope.com). Pre-Party at TNT Thurs, Sept 6. Street Bob Raffle Tickets are available at TNT ($5 each). You can also sign-out batches of 5 tickets from Jim and Tammy Boore (or TNT) to sell yourselves. Any HOG Member selling $1000 in tickets will be treated to an exclusive party at H-D VP Karl Eberle s farm and will be eligible to ride in the Parade of Champions on Saturday, Sept 8. Sponsoring Dealer News TNT Action Sports From Brenda Williams: Some of you know - some of you don't - but I have been faced with making the decision to leave TNT. This move was a very difficult one for me because of the relationships I have made with so many of you. As I have always said, TNT has allowed me to turn many customers into life long friends. Many of you have been to my home with your families in tow. We have shared many ups, many downs, good times, a few wrecks (both physically and personally), we've traveled together and even had a few drunk moments along the road! The TNT Family unit is a strong one and continue to take care of each other. I wanted to thank you for allowing me to take care of you all these years, share in your passion for life and become part of your family! By the way, I m not going far. I will be calling B&B Livestock in Camp Point home. So when you are traveling down Rt 24, please stop and see me! And no worries - I will be off every other Saturday - so plan on seeing me often! I might be gone - but I ll NEVER go away! Peace Out! New Faces at TNT Chris Otte Ship/Receiving Austin Wellman Ship/Receiving TNT Holiday Schedule Please note that TNT will be Closed July 4th & 5th for Independence Day. July 5 is a trade-off day for the store being open on Labor Day (Sept 3) when we ll be hosting the Labor Day Telethon at the store.
5 Volume 19, Issue 7 Page 5 In this month s historical report, Rear View Mirror, we re traveling back five years to Here are some highlights from the Newsletters of Your Primary Officers for 2002 were: Director Bill Esicar Assistant Director Paul Pogue (again an officer in 2007) Secretary Debbie Powell (again an officer in 2007) Treasurer Kelly Masters (Editors note: Pete Whitley had served as RRC Director for four years prior to 2002.) There was a great deal of buzz in 02 about TNT s impending move to the new location at 5101 Oak and Harley s quickly approaching 100th Anniversary. After all, the 03 Anniversary models would hit the dealerships in the fall of this year! Anticipation and expectations were high for both and neither disappointed. Greg Deitrich won the 50/50 drawing at the February meeting and bagged $ Since Greg and Jen recently bought TWO Dyna s and re-joined our group, he must have invested that $65.00 wisely! Gil Feld coordinated the Quincy Mall Harley-Only Bike Show held in April. The first ever RRC HOG meeting at the new 5101 Oak location was held May 1. Lots of plans were being made for the 03 Illinois State Rally right here in the Gem City! Only fitting since our chapter has Missouri roots and Hannibal had been the location of more than one Missouri State Rally. The July Newsletter introduced John Rear View Mirror J. Michael Hitt - Historian and Venora Deemer as new members. Five years later they are BOTH very active and serve as Chapter Officers! Also announced in July was the Quincy Police Department Motor Patrol Project QPD-HOG. Money was to be be raised for officer training and safety equipment. By November, $4,900 had been raised. It turned out to be a big success, with nearly $14 grand ultimately generated (none from HOG coffers). In years past, the Motor Patrol Officers have talked to our chapter about their training and experiences. If you ever get the chance to learn how Motor Officers are trained on motorcycles, I strongly urge you to jump at the chance. July was a busy month. TNT s Grand Opening at the current location was on the 12th and 13th. The 2002 Shiloh Ride netted $4, and the HOG Days event allowed TNT and the chapter to donate $4, to local charities and worthy causes. Mileage Contest Winners were Don Leffler with 13,731 and Margaret Goetz racked up 11,733. True or False? Gus Traeder was the first Harley-Davidson dealer in the Quincy area. LuAnn Kleemeyer For those who may not have heard, Chapter Photographer and former LOH Officer LuAnn Kleemeyer was involved in a very serious motorcycle accident on June 9. After ministering with the CMA at Wayland, MO, the group was headed back to Quincy by way of Keokuk to ride down the Illinois side. The riders were stopped at a fourway stop in Keokuk. A semi flatbed rig pulled up beside them and the 26-ton Track-Hoe it was transporting broke loose, sliding off the flatbed. LuAnn was knocked from her bike and dragged along the street by the overturned Track-Hoe. When emergency medical services got her to Iowa City, it was immediately determined that her right leg would require amputation. She also had a deep puncture wound in her left leg, but was able to move her left toes and ankle so there didn t appear to be nerve damage in that leg. Tim Schoch, Noah Clatt and RRC s Greg & Lisa Bock were all riding with LuAnn when the accident occurred but were not hit. Noah's wife Connie was thrown to the ground in the incident, but did not receive major injuries. Reports are that LuAnn is making good progress and her spirits are high. She was actually quite fortunate and is very thankful to be alive. Until she returns home, messages can be sent to: Programs/Volunteerservices/ patient.asp. Cards can also be mailed to: LuAnn Kleemeyer Room 3093 UI Hospitals and Clinics Volunteer Services 200 Hawkins Drive Iowa City, Iowa NOTE: A Rainy Day Account has been established to assist with LuAnn s short-term obligations during her down-time. Donations can be made at any Mercantile Trust & Savings Bank facility. Checks can be made out to the LuAnn Kleemeyer Rainy Day Fund. Member Updates Dave Bleigh Long-time RRC HOG Member Dave Bleigh underwent triple bypass on Apr 27 in Columbia, MO and on May 31 he developed an infection. Faye says they are pretty tired of hospitals, but his surgeon said, he will be able to ride again as long as he follows instructions during his recovery.
6 Page 6 River Roads Chapter Harley Owners Group The Co- Riders Responsibility A Treasury Note Due to Newsletter production schedules, financial information in this publication may not always be 100% current. Accurate data is always available from our River Roads Treasurer at the monthly Chapter Meetings. The Safety Corner Richard Brassfield - Safety Officer So you re the co-rider this trip? What could you do to make the ride more pleasurable for both you and the rider? The Look No, The Look is not a style of clothing. It s even easier (and cheaper) than that. The Look is looking at the right place as the bike makes a turn. Why not take advantage of the same technique a trained rider uses to keep oriented in a turn? The place to look is over the rider s shoulder in the direction of the turn. As you look over the rider s right shoulder in a right turn, look all the way through the turn and keep your eyes level with the horizon. This means tilting your head away from the direction of the turn. If you re turning right, lean your body right but keep your head vertical. Using The Look keeps you leaning with the rider and keeps you oriented properly so you can enjoy the turns even more. A Sense of Direction Wouldn t you like your rider to pay more attention to the road and less to the map? If you think it s hard to read a map while driving, it s even harder to read a map while riding a motorcycle. The rider is usually glad to have someone else navigate. As a corider you can concentrate on the navigation, allowing the rider to concentrate on riding. Preparation A very short checklist can make any ride a lot more pleasant. Do you have rain gear, sunscreen, a map and sunglasses? These items are often not in plain sight but will be sorely missed if they are needed and not there. Of course, there is much more that can be put on your checklist for the trip. You do have a checklist, don t you? Not all preparation can be done just before the trip. Was the trip planned so the rider The Money Report Don Hummel - Treasurer June Income: Membership Dues $70.00 Ansar Shriner Poker Run Total $ June Expenses: Newsletter Printing & Postage $ Total $ had a chance to get adequate sleep before starting? Working all day and riding all night is probably not the best plan for rider or co-rider. Results Investing a little time in preparation beforehand and a little effort on The Look and navigation during the ride can make it more pleasant for both the rider and the co-rider. Please remember to keep your National HOG Memberships current. We have also instituted a "Mentoring" program within the local Chapter. Mentors are asked to call new members to invite them to upcoming River Roads Chapter Meetings and activities as well as introduce them to other RRC members. This is an effort to make new members feel more welcome and included. If you are interested in becoming a Mentor please notify me and I will add you to our Mentor list. It only takes a couple of minutes a month and it s a BIG help in welcoming new members! The Truth is Out! J. Michael Hitt, River Roads Chapter Historian Quincy, IL - Here's the scoop. Remember this day, as you won't find this story printed or published anywhere else. It's not common knowledge but we have a journalistic responsibility to "out" the subject of this behind-the-scenes investigative report. As your humble correspondent and Chapter Historian, I have uncovered a horrible truth. You guessed it - Bryan Smith has $ burning a hole in his pocket. This is vitally important: Don't panic! We all adore Bryan and recognize him as a role model. This is a sad day indeed, but you can help Bryan s plight. Please, please, please, if each of you would take about 5 minutes a month from your busy schedules to READ THE CHAPTER NEWSLETTER and ANSWER THE TRIVIA QUES- TION, Bryan's torment and shame can be put to rest! Here's how to help. Read the Newsletter and answer the Trivia Question Just GUESS for God's sake; this ain't Rocket Science, folks! Come to the meeting and see if your name is drawn from the correct entries If it is - you'll be ONE OF ONLY ELEVEN with a chance to win the $500 at this year s Christmas party! See how easy that is? Help our sponsoring dealer from this tragedy that has befallen him AND possibly win the $500 worth of Genuine Harley Davidson Parts, Accessories and/or Motorclothes. Truly a Win-Win opportunity. And your chances of winning are quite high considering that an average of only about 10 people a month enter! Remember, there are only 5 monthly drawings left so get in there! If you wait, all that happens is that you get OLDER

Sturgis is Just Around the Corner First of all, I would just like to say that our thoughts and prayers go out to LuAnn for her recovery after the tragic events of last week. It looks like summer is in fullswing for many activities both on and off your motorcycle. From July 5th to the 7th will be the New York State Hog Rally in Hunter, New York. At the same time the Delaware Rally is going on in Dover, Delaware. It sure would be nice if they had the NASCAR race at the same time. Assistant Director Bernie Freeman It looks I ll have to pass on Sturgis this year. I do know someone with a great place to stay out there though, so if anyone is interested feel free to give me a call. The place we stay is in between Sturgis and Rapid City, right off the interstate. There is a little gravel but their gravel roads are different than ours and not bad at all. Sturgis is a great ride because there is just so much to see out there and the Black Hills are awesome. Two weeks before the actual event is the best time to go because there are not too many bikes yet which makes for a much more relaxing riding environment. In closing, ride safe and keep LuAnn and her family in your prayers and thoughts. Bernie I have not had as much time as I would like to ride yet this year as it s been a busy summer already. Hopefully this fall things will slow down and I ll get some riding in before the season is over and another Midwest winter sets in (did I just say Winter?)
