3 SPBS MAY CROWNING 2016 Dear SPBS Families, Saint Paschal Baylon School cordially invites you to attend our annual May Crowning THIS Wednesday - May 11, at 11:00am, in the Church. ~Tradition and History of the May Crowning : Within the Catholic liturgical calendar, the month of May is dedicated in honor of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and Our Holy Mother. May Crowning ceremonies are a popular and longstanding tradition in the United States, dating back prior to Vatican II, and are held during May to honor Mary. This practice continues in many parish schools throughout the United States and in other countries. During the May Crowning, a statue of Mary is crowned with a wreath of blossoms to symbolize Mary's virtues; virtues that are to be imitated by the faithful. This crown of flowers is placed on Mary by the May Queen, who is selected as the girl, who best emulates the virtues exemplified by Mary, the Mother of God. The ceremony is presided over by the parish priest. In addition, school families, friends and parishioners attend the May Crowning, and in fact used to help carry large statues of Mary into the church on their shoulders. Flowers, in particular roses which are associated closely with Mary, are brought to the church by the faithful. ~Saint Paschal Baylon School continues this beautiful May Crowning tradition each year. Early Wednesday morning, our parish school students and parents bring flowers from their gardens, which are then gathered into bouquets and boutonnieres by parent volunteers, and are also used to decorate the church altar for the May Crowning. Our SPBS new First Communicants, the Second Grade, wear their First Communion outfits. The Eighth Grade students, dressed in their Sunday Best, provide the Honor Guard for the May Queen s entrance procession into the church, and the entire student body attends the ceremony. During the ceremony, an 8th Grade girl, selected as the May Queen by the girls in her class, as the girl who best emulates the virtues exemplified by Mary, crowns the statue of Mary in the same manner which has been practiced for generations. This year s May Queen is Molly M. Traditional hymns in honor of Mary will be sung by our school choir. A decade of the rosary is said, and wooden rosaries, handmade by SPB parishioners, Sue and Rick Boryk, as a personal ministry, are distributed to our Second Grade class. Please join us at our lovely and timeless spiritual devotion to Mary, the Mother of God THIS Wednesday. Together In Faith, Suzanne Stewart Duffy-Principal MAY CROWNING PORTRAITS - AND FLOWERS FROM YOUR GARDEN Please plan to join us this Wednesday, May 11, for the May Crowning Ceremony in the church at 11:00 a.m. All Second Graders are to be in their First Communion clothing and all 8 th graders are to be in *graduation dress clothes. Thank You! SPBS MRS. HOWARD S LIBRARY UPDATE Dear SPBS Families, Once again, a large number of our SPB students and families spent an enriching week with their electronic screens off, and their imaginations turned on last week! CONGRATULATIONS! It is our hope that Screen-Free Week will serve as a jumping-off point for reducing electronic screen time all year around for your children. The following are a few year round ideas to help break-free of electronic screens: ~Keep your recreational electronic screens and devices off during meals. ~Designate certain days of the week as screenfree days (start with one day!). ~Consider not having a television in your child s bedroom. ~Do not worry if your children say they are bored. Boredom is subjective; it is also a term that is used too often and many times for the wrong reasons, when children are not really bored ; and often the feeling passes, and can in fact lead to creativity on the part of the child. Please check today s Family Envelope for a flyer, outlining some more suggestions for limiting screen time in order to help raise healthier kids. Together In Faith, Mrs. Mimi Lachina - SPBS Librarian SPBS ROOM PARENTS FOR Dear SPBS Parents, Please take a look inside the Family Envelope today, and consider volunteering to be a Room Parent for your child s class next year. The volunteer sign-up flyer coming home today will be your ONLY opportunity to sign-up as a Room parent for the academic year here at SPBS! Therefore, please be sure to locate the RSVP flyer for Room Parents! We make every effort to include all parents who wish to be a Room Parent. Together In Faith, Aimee Palosi-Coordinator UPDATE OF KATHLEEN BROWN, DRE Dear SPBS Families, As many of you know may know Mrs. Kathleen Brown, our SPB Director of Religious Education, has been out on Sick Leave since September Under the leadership of Barbara Durand, our Religious Education (RE) Program has continued and has been again very successful. Before Kathleen Brown went on leave, she had organized the entire year. I am incredibly grateful to Barbara, who did an outstanding job as a volunteer she refused to accept any remuneration for her service to our parish. God bless you Barbara!!!! Unfortunately, Kathleen continues to be plagued with health issues. Understanding the needs of the parish, and for the sake of the children and the RE Program, Kathleen will not be returning as the Director of Religious Education for SPB Parish. I am most grateful for Mrs. Brown s years of dedicated service and commitment to our parish and to Religious Ed. We will now begin a search for a new SPB Director of Religious Education and Faith Formation Coordinator. I would ask you all to pray for a successful search. Once again I express my gratitude to both Kathleen and Barbara. God bless them both. Blessings, Fr. Michael Rocha - Pastor 7
