The Jaguars kept the game close early getting five points from Lexi Zieske in the first quarter, but the Squirrels got a pair of three s from Taylor Kraft and five points from Courtney Dixon and a pair of field goals from Hannah Breske to hold a 7- lead after one quarter. The Squirrels balanced scoring attack continued in the second quarter getting eight points from Carmen Titus. Maybe something will catch your eye. There are a couple of items of interest that came out of the last few park board meetings we had. The park board tries to use its winter meetings to review what we did right and what we did wrong from the previous summer and what we could do better in the future. We look for a lot of input in January, February and March because quite frankly, we don t have all the answers, and if someone thinks they have a better idea, we want to hear it. That doesn t mean the board and its patrons will agree on everything. Life doesn t work that way and neither does the park district. I don t deal with a lot of big issues around here, but it seems like the ones I do bump into involve an individual player. Simply put, I can t worry about just one kid. I realize that puts me and that particular child s parents on different news@ccreporter.com PO Box 9, Casselton, ND 58 that, please call me and we can talk. Our patrons are also always welcome at park board meetings. Our next one is scheduled for Wednesday, March, at 5 p.m. in the golf course clubhouse I got so busy telling you about I and we and team and program that I forgot to let you in on the changes the park board made at our most recent meeting. The first one involves the Squirts and the Ponies, our two youth programs for seven and eight-year-old players. I ll try to make a long story short. We ran into some problems the last couple of years because the Squirts played some games outside Casselton with teams from Kindred, Enderlin, Harwood, etc. The Ponies didn t get to play any games because most local towns don t have separate girls program for seven and eight-year-olds. That wasn t right, so the park board decided to let our Squirts and Ponies play together beginning in the summer of. I don t have a problem with it and I talked to some parents who have kids that age and they didn t, either, so we re going to give it a shot. We ll see how it goes and adjust next year if necessary. The other issue involves pool passes. We ve charged $ for family pass and $5 for individuals since we opened the new facility in 9. Nothing ever gets cheaper and running the pool doesn t, either, so we re increasing our rates in. A family pass will now cost $5 and an individual one will be $75. All our other swim rates stayed the same. We didn t change any of our other program rates, either. The park board needs to remain solvent, financially, but on the flip side, we don t do the things we do to make a bunch of money. Our goal for our programs and facilities is to break even. The pool never will, no matter what we charge, so we might as well make it affordable for everyone to use. Great Savings on Quality Vehicles! Fast, friendly service sides of the fence, but if we re going to try and be successful with what we do here in Casselton, I need to be more concerned about our teams in particular and our programs as a whole. Last summer, we had 4 kids participate in different programs, from T-Ball up through 8U softball and American Legion baseball. My focus has to be the big picture; I am concerned first with what s best for our baseball and softball programs overall. After that, I can worry about what s happening with our teams or groups, but rarely can I focus on any one particular player. Putting I before we is not something I m interested in doing, and if that makes me the bad guy with mom, dad, grandpa, grandma or Aunt Linda, so be it. I just finished editing our baseball and softball policy guidelines for our new website, which we hope to unveil in the next couple of weeks. Parents and players should take a good look at what s out there and think about how it applies to their situation. 5 B-5 Around Rural Cass Celebrate. Remember. Relay for a cure for cancer. The Governors Inn ballroom was festively decorated for a birthday party Sunday afternoon as part of the rural Cass County Relay for Life kickoff event theme, Celebrating More Birthdays. For Central Cass graduate Lyndsey Swanson, the event evokes memories of her infancy cancer journey and reminds her to be thankful for each day. It means a lot to me [to be part of the Relay for Life] because it reminds me that I m lucky to be here and I know that I have a lot of strength that I can share with others, she said. I hope I can inspire other people. Just before her first birthday Lyndsey was diagnosed with a common childhood cancer, neuroblastoma. She had chemotherapy and surgery prior to her first birthday, said Jane Swanson, her mom. At age five, Lyndsey was considered to be in remission and no longer had to have regular check-ups at Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo. For the Swansons, the experience helped unify the family. We are a very close family and I think a lot of the stuff we have had to deal with has made us a lot stronger, said Jane Swanson. Rural Cass Relay for Life co-chair Jessica Toop believes the event is another way to unite survivors, those battling cancer and their friends and family members. The feeling you get when you are at a Relay for Life event is incredible, said Toop, who participated in the Fargo Relay for Life two years ago. It brings everyone together and feels like a healing process. Because of her positive experience with the event two years ago, she immediately knew she wanted to be part of making it happen in rural Cass County. When this came up for Casselton, I was all for it, said Toop. I said yes, I would love to help bring this to Casselton because it is just such an amazing event. There are - teams signed up to participate in the event, June - at the Casselton Reservoir. It will begin around 5 p.m. and last throughout the night with music, a time of bonding with family and friends and walking around the reservoir, which will be lit by luminarias in honor and in memory of those who battled cancer. There is still plenty of time to get involved through forming a team, donating or volunteering with one of the event committees. For more information, contact Julie Nelson at or Jessica Toop at Or, log on to Survivorship Chair Kim Scheer, left and Luminaria Chair Sheila Krueger pose next to their table at the Relay for Life kick-off event, Sunday, Feb. at the Governors Inn ballroom. The display next to Scheer documents years of local residents participating in the Fargo area Relay for Life. Rural Cass County Relay for Life event co-chair Jessica Toop, left, spoke with Registration and Accounting Chair, Jane Swanson and her daughter Lyndsey, a cancer survivor. Ten to teams have signed up to participate in the walk. Photos by Amanda Gades/The Reporter Event-goers enjoyed cake, cookies, coffee and punch as part of the Relay for Life theme, Celebrating More Birthdays. Sisters Madison, left and Hannah Pilon decorated luminarias in honor of their dad, Chuck, who is battling cancer. A mock campsite was set up in the ballroom to give people ideas for their team site during the Relay for Life event, June -. Extension Notes Anne Gregoire, NDSU Extension Agent, Cass County Love Your Heart... No, I am not talking about your special Valentine, it is important to love the heart in your body. February is American Heart Month! Just so you know how important it is to love your heart, here are some facts that you may find interesting. According to the American Heart Association (www. heart.org): *Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease. *One in three Americans have one or more forms of cardiovascular disease, one person dies every 9 seconds from cardiovascular disease. *More women die from cardiovascular disease than the next four causes of death combined including all forms of cancer. Now that you have that information, you may be wondering how you can prevent your heart from becoming one of those statistics. Eating a healthy diet and getting enough physical activity are extremely important to maintaining a healthy heart. The following are tips to help keep your heart healthy. *Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables every day. Fruits and vegetables will provide the necessary nutrients and antioxidants that your body needs in order to defend itself against disease. Most American adults do not consume nearly enough fruits and vegetables. On average, it is recommended that we get two and a half cups of vegetables and two cups of fruit daily. If you are interested in recommendations based on your personal needs, check out for more information. Not only are fruits and vegetables packed with vitamins and minerals they also contain fiber. *Eating 5-5 grams of fiber is recommended for a heart healthy diet. Foods high in soluble fiber like oatmeal may help lower cholesterol levels when eaten regularly with a low-fat diet. Beans, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and nuts or seeds are generally higher in fiber than other foods. *Lowering your sodium intake may also be beneficial. The American Heart Association recommends consuming less than 5 mg of sodium every day which is less than a one teaspoon per day. *Changing the type of fat you eat may keep your heart pumping longer. Using polyunsaturated (sunflower, corn, and soybean oils) and monounsaturated (olive and canola oils) fats instead of solid fat (butter or margarine) is important when trying to improve your cholesterol levels. *Speaking of the right fats fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, hearing, and mackerel are full of omega- fatty acids, which are also great for a healthy heart. *Aim for at least minutes of physical activity most days of the week. This may seem like a lot of rules to follow but every small change makes a difference! 8 Entertainment B-8 Adventure awaits at ND 4-H camps Want to learn archery, hunting skills or how to shoot a rifle? How about taking ATV training or learning to work with fibers such as yarn and thread or make jerky and identify animal tracks? The 4-H Camp near Washburn has a camp for that. 4-H Camp also has camps where youth can learn how to groom and show livestock, care for a horse or express themselves with arts and crafts, as well as go swimming, canoeing and fishing; go on nature hikes and trail rides; play sports; learn about birds and other wildlife; compete in 4-H s version of the Survivor game; dance; stay up late to enjoy night challenge games; and sit around a campfire. Other camps are specifically for youth from military families or youth from military-connected families, such as brother, sisters, nieces or nephews of someone in the military. Youth from military families learn about different military branches, work in adult-led teams to complete tasks and form bonds with other youth from military families, take part in action-packed activities, experience leadership roles while engaged in team-building events, go swimming and hiking, and enjoy campfires. Military-connected youth participate in fun traditional 4-H camping activities along with sessions that focus on the life events youth face as a military family member. They also learn outdoor skills, such as archery and fishing, and make friends. The camps are open to all youth ages five to 8, not just those who are 4-H members. Registration for this summer s camps starts March.
