1 the O C T O B E R Woodstock Academy International Newsletter Homecoming Weekend was a success! Every October, Woodstock Academy has their Homecoming Weekend. It is a time for alumni (students who graduated) to come together and cheer on the sport teams as well as catch up with each other. Some of our alumni graduated over 50 years ago and returned to campus for some of the events and see for themselves, how much Woodstock Academy has grown thanks to the gifts of money they have given the school. Dances, dinners and fun filled the weekend. HOMECOMING KING October News What a beautiful fall we have been having. The weather has been beautiful and the leaves have changed their colors from green to all shades of orange, red, yellow and rust. The weather has been great for all the sport teams such as soccer, field hockey, cross country (running) and football. Watching a game is exciting. Lots of school spirit can be seen and heard at the games as the students and fans cheer on Woodstock Academy. Soccer and cross-country have been a favorite for many of the international students and by joining a team; they not only make friends but also feel a strong part of the school. Bruce Sakindi (right) was chosen to be the King of this year s Homecoming Dance. Bruce started his career at Woodstock Academy when he was in grade 9 and now he will be graduating in June, Bruce comes from Rwanda and was also elected as the senior class president for this year. He has made many friends over the years and when he graduates, he hopes to study law in a university or college.

2 Spirit Plus-- one student dressing up for the Homecoming Celebration! SAT After the fun of Homecoming, students had to seriously settle down to work and take the SAT s on October 14 th. The younger students took the PSAT and the seniors took the SAT. They all were exhausted after this test. Alumna enjoying the Homecoming Reunion The SAT or ACT Test is not the only criteria for entrance into college or university; colleges also look closely at a student s transcript (grades) throughout high school as well as the activities and clubs they have joined. Becoming involved in high school through clubs, activities, volunteering and athletics is something we encourage all international students to do in order to become accepted at their chosen colleges and universities. We have over 40 clubs and activities for students to join and United States colleges and universities look very closely at a student s record of after school activities. Please encourage your children to become active in clubs, sports and other activities if they have not already done so. BOSTON OVERNIGHT TRIP Forty-two students and school chaperones, had a fantastic weekend staying in Boston on October 24 th and 25 th. Boston has so much to offer everyone and some students decided to take in historical sites, while others opted to eating wonderful food in Boston s Chinatown and shop in the very fashionable Newbury Street area. Since Boston is only a little more than an hour away from the Academy, it is a perfect trip to get away for a short time from country living to city life. 3 Rachel Congratulations to the new members invited to join the National Honor Society The National Honor Society inducted three new international students. The factors necessary to achieve this honor are excellent grades, evidence of leadership, service to the school and a positive attitude toward school, the environment and the world. The students who were selected as new members of this honorable society are Cheng Chi (Rachel), Wu Shanhao (Kevin) and Yu Peixin (Eva). Congratulations to these exceptional students!!! Kevin Recognition Eva Allen He was chosen by the administration as an outstanding student of Woodstock Academy and will be recognized as such on Dec. 3 rd. Allen is a senior who is friendly to all, enthusiastic, possesses school spirit, volunteers both in and out school and is a very strong student. He represents a great model of a Woodstock Academy student. TRICK OR TREAT STREET Halloween is a fun time for young children that occurs on October 31 st. Because the town of Woodstock is so rural, we open the Academy to the children of the area. Many clubs in school chose a theme to decorate a classroom and wear costumes and welcome the children (who are dressed as princesses, fairies, minions, skeletons, etc,) to travel from classroom to classroom and receive candy and treats. It s a fun time for all as each club dresses as special characters and the children go home with lots of goodies. 3

4 International Club s SpongeBob Theme The Fun Begins! The Intercultural Club decided on a SpongeBob theme to decorate a classroom for Trick or Treat Street to celebrate Halloween. They had so much fun deciding on how to make SpongeBob costumes that they all ended up laughing and truly getting in the Halloween spirit. Hundreds of young children dressed up as their favorite characters such as princesses, dragons, Superman and goblins visited every classroom (which had a different theme) and received candy and treats. Some parents and teachers even dressed up in a costume!! It was so much fun for all adults, students and young children. Before After The club s banner 4

Your children are exceptional and they are a wonderful addition to our school. As you can see, they are having fun, doing well in school and are a joy to have as Woodstock Academy students. 5
