Ready for Friday Night By Julie Garcia Corpus Christi Caller-Times Sept. 3, 2016 Early August humidity made the air thick. The Eagles started sweating before any work started. They were on the field before the sun came up. "From the time that we break to the time that we get to that locker room, I don't want to see anybody walking," said Coach Cody Simper. "I don't care how tired you are. You suck it up, and you be leaders." A hip-hop playlist blared in the background as junior varsity and potential varsity football players were split into groups to train on the fundamentals hitting, tackling and endurance. They knew they had no time to waste. The deadline was tight 18 days from the first practice until the Veterans Memorial football team's first game on Aug. 26. Because of spring football practice, the team was forced to wait a week longer to begin practice than every other school in the monstrous District 30-5A. "If you do not respond well to the chaos and the difficulty of practice, do not expect to play in the game. That's not practice time, that's not when we find out who those 11 guys are," Simper said. "We find out who those 11 guys are right now." The Caller-Times chronicled the journey from the first practice to the first game for the new varsity program, and found out what it takes to create new traditions in a school district with five long-standing high schools. The Veterans Memorial Eagles are the first new high school football team in the Corpus Christi school district in nearly 60 years. Go to a stadium on a Friday night anywhere in Texas, and there is much more going on than four quarters of football. Thunderous drum cadences, red and blue pom-poms and the blinding white drill team boots create the lifeblood of the Friday night experience for students, parents and fans. What's a touchdown without the school's fight song? Is the win still as sweet without the playing of the alma mater? Lindsey Trahan, director of the Starline drill team and former Texas State University Strutter, said being a part of the experience is like nothing else in the world. "Friday night lights would not be what it is with just football," Trahan said. "It's about creating an atmosphere where we're performing with the band and learning the fight song so we can cheer with the cheerleaders. At a football game, everyone is incorporated."

A HIGH BAR When Veterans opened in 2015, Simper was already hired as head coach, and he put together a short junior varsity game schedule for the team of mostly sophomores and freshmen. Principal Kim James looked for coaches who had high energy, passion and a love for kids. She hired someone who knew the stakes. "With a first year varsity team, we assume everyone is our rival. Everybody is out to beat Veterans Memorial," James said. To Simper, nothing is more important than the next practice and the next game. "We're really focusing on a 1-0 mentality. Every week, we're trying to win that game," Simper said. "Those first five games, a lot of that is about teaching them how to prepare to get ready for Friday nights. The bigger deal will be the focus it takes Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to prepare for that game." Even before the season started, the boys felt pressure to perform. "We have a lot of things to prove. It's a new school and people are going to say we're just in the spotlight because we're new," said Clinton Middleton, junior offensive lineman. "You have to prove that you're good, so they'll give you respect." Not only do the players hail from other CCISD schools, the coaches worked at several of them. Simper coached football and was the athletic coordinator at Ray High School for five years, compiling a record and making the playoffs in 2010, 2012 and The new school student body is made up primarily of freshmen and sophomores. The Class of 2017 will be the first to graduate from Veterans, but there are less than 20 senior varsity players. "We're not focusing on our senior group necessarily being the leaders. We want anyone who has those leadership qualities and feels like they've earned that leadership role to step up and fill it," Simper said. "We trust a whole bunch of them to fill that role." A DASH OF SPIRIT Every morning at 7 a.m., 61 girls pile into a practice room in Veterans' fine arts hall. For two hours, they review any of the 11 routines they've learned for pep rallies and football games. Then they go to class for seven hours.

"We love to honor our school, show off our colors and show that we're just as good as any other drill team," said Alyssa Reyes, Starline's junior colonel. "This year, we're really ready to bring it and show what we can." The concept of a drill team was created in Texas, said Trahan, the Starline director. As a former high school and college drill team dancer, she brought some traditions with her to the new squad. But the fun part is starting from scratch, like with the choreography for the fight song. "Any time a director goes into a high school, you're never going to change a fight song. You just have to deal with it even if it's stupid," Trahan said. "It's really cool to know that in 50 years, they're going to say 'That's what Miss Trahan created.'" From the hairstyle to the uniform they don, every aspect of the Starline has been formulated by the current squad. The activities created today will become the traditions of the school's future. And spirit is an integral ingredient to that future. It takes guts to perform on a football field during halftime in front of hundreds of people, said V. Zamora, cheer coach. Zamora, along with the Student Council, wrote the Veterans Memorial Fight Song. "I look up to these girls; that's a lot of courage for a 16-year-old human being to have to muster up every week," Zamora said. "Putting that spirit into the school, leading the crowd... I don't know I would have the forte or the bravery." The Eagle cheerleaders are made up of 20 girls from every grade. The team dances, tumbles and leads chants like you would expect, but there's more to the job. "Some students actually asked me where to go today, and it felt nice because they trusted me to tell them," said sophomore Madeline Trevino. "I felt like an ambassador for the school. It's a good feeling." PLAY TOGETHER The Screaming Eagle Marching Band has expectations to live up to as well. On the parking lot in front of the school's auditorium, the band practices for two hours every morning on marching drill before heading to the band hall for music. Band director Shawn Athey transferred to Veterans last year after beginning his career at Orange Grove. "A lot of bands gave us smack because we didn't have a marching show last year," said Lacey Silverstein, a sophomore saxophonist. "This year, we all have it in our heads that we have to show them that we can march and our shows will look neat and clean."

The band is performing "Pandora Reopened." By the time of the first football game, the young band of 100 students (only eight are seniors) marched part of the show's first movement. Drill is designed for brass, woodwinds, drum line and flags. Pit percussion plays from the sideline and a single baton twirler dances around the field. Last year, Victoria Contreras walked into Athey's office for an audition as a freshman. Now she has choreographed, along with her outside coach from the Nancy Eisenhauer School of Twirling, most songs for future twirlers. "Baton twirling is different. You use metal sticks, it combines dance and gymnastics," Victoria, a sophomore, said. "I knew they weren't going to have twirlers (at Veterans) but I decided to make history and be the first twirler." THE WEEK BEFORE A week before the first football game against Laredo Martin, school started and the football and auxiliary teams were in a frenzy. There was a lot of work still to do before their first athletic and musical debuts. "We're looking for guys that are tough. Tough people win at this game," Simper said. "This isn't golf. Come out every day and prove your toughness." Anthony Guerrero Jr. was the only freshman to play with varsity in the first game. Coming from a Catholic school background, the offensive player said the competition for spots is more intense at Veterans. "My dad has been coaching me with tackle football since I was five years old and he put the work in for me to get to this level right now," Anthony said. "I was able to work hard enough to make the varsity team." Because the squad is younger than most, the time spent in the weight room has to count, said John Mitchell, the strength and conditioning coach. He prefers elastic band training, explosive reps and Olympic weightlifting movements. "I had three guys squat over 500-pounds last year as sophomores," Mitchell said. "I'm pleased that I didn't have to fight a lot of opinions. They really bought in." In a nod to the military, the coaches started a helmet striping ceremony for the players and a male figure in their life. It's symbolic in that it shows appreciation for male leadership and also that the varsity squad has been selected for the first game. "One thing that is extremely important in our society is male influence in the lives of our young men," Simper said during the ceremony. "When you're putting those stripes on

your helmet, understand that it's more than making your helmet look good on Friday night." Cedric Evans Jr., a junior on offense, invited his uncle, John Evans, to the ceremony when his dad had to work. "We have a long tradition of Evanses playing football. He's the last of our Evans men," John Evans said. "You have no idea how long we've been waiting to see him play varsity." Cedric's father and uncle both played at Miller High School. John Evans said it's exciting to see his nephew starting a new program. "I feel like it's an honor. I remember my cousins playing, and I want to carry on that tradition and keep it living," Cedric said. GAME DAY Game day has arrived. The team readies to play their second away game. "Friday nights are the most iconic part of high school. The football team, the band playing, cheerleaders cheering, Starline dancing," said A.J. Valverde, a senior high brass section leader and trumpet soloist. "It's taken us a while to get the music going and the marching down, but we've hit the ball rolling. We've improved a lot." The Eagles run through a large inflatable with cheerleaders and Starline members on each side. The band plays the fight song and the team gets in one last huddle before kickoff. "Eagle pride on three, Eagle pride on me. One, two..." "Eagle pride!" BUILDING FRIDAY NIGHTS The Eagles are the first new varsity team in Corpus Christi in nearly 60 years. The Caller- Times chronicled the journey from the first practice to the first game to reveal what it takes to create new traditions in a district with five long-standing high schools.
