1 AUGUST NEWSLETTER August 1, 2017 Our Website: President s Letter to Membership AUGUST truly the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer! Outdoor activities such as concerts, fireworks, fairs and festivals or enjoying sitting on your deck or patio are just a few distractions during this time of year. We also factor in vacations and family commitments that come with the summer season. How do you find time to do all that you want to do? For sure, it is not easy. When our attendance at the Wednesday night dances dips down a bit during the summer, we hope you are enjoying another fun-filled activity. We know you will return when schedules permit. We are fortunate to have a large group of regulars who consistently bless us with their smiles on a weekly basis. Thank you for being so dedicated. Adding to our weekly attendance are another important group of people our Guests. This year we have had 168 guests in the first six months. Some guests have become members (thank you), some guests join us when they can, and some guests come to see what we are all about. Regardless of the reasons they come, we must remember that they are guests in our home. I am borrowing a portion of an article written by Kap Chermak that was published in the Newsletter many years ago. It serves as a good reminder to us that we are the Ambassadors of Dance for our club to those who are new or visiting. Think back on your first visit how were you received? If someone you do not know happens to sit at your table, please invite them into the conversation and do your part to make them feel welcome. Just think how hard it is to walk into a room full of people you do not know. Not all of us are outgoing some of us need to be nurtured along, especially females who are accustomed to being asked to dance. We pride ourselves at club that everyone dances with everybody, but for the first or second time guest, they are not aware of this. Make an effort to dance each week with someone you have never danced with before or someone who is new. It will amaze you how fast you get to know fellow club members. Guests are special people and so are you. After all, you, too, were once a guest! Upcoming this month is our second special dance of the year the Summer Beach Party. I hope you are planning on attending. Carol Kyle and her committee have been busy planning this event, including guest instructors teaching an East Coast pattern. See you there! 3 Ice Cream Social What better way to celebrate summer than an ice Cream Social! On July 5 Marlene and Cecil Cook and their committee served up delicious Pav s Ice Cream to a hungry crowd. Choices were chocolate or vanilla ice cream with various toppings or a cooling root beer float. Many members enjoyed a combination of the two offerings. A big thank you goes out to all who participated!

4 Do you want to Dance? John I. I have written several articles this year about lessons and their benefits. Well one last article on lessons before I move on to other subjects. The one question I get asked the most is, what type of lessons are the most beneficial? Here I will outline my take on group versus private lessons. First let s look at the most popular type of lessons, Group lessons Benefits: 1. Practice leading and following with a variety of partners. 2. Make new friends and practice partners. 3. Learn by watching other people try new moves. 4. Group lessons are less expensive than private lessons. Drawbacks: 1. Most group classes rotate partners, which means you will dance with others in the class. 2. The speed of the class may be too fast or too slow for you. 3. The schedule is not flexible. If you miss a class you might have difficulty catching up. Group lessons are recommended for the casual learner, most beginners and the cost-conscious student. Private Lessons Benefits: 1. Receive individual attention and feedback. Work on what you want to learn at all times. 2. Lesson is paced according to your abilities. 3. Practice with your partner or the instructor only. 4. Schedule lessons as needed. Drawbacks: 1. You will miss out on the learning experience and social benefits of dancing with other partners. 2. Private lessons are more expensive. Private lesson may be preferred if you are preparing for a special event, like a wedding, or you wish to dance with just a single partner or your schedule is too erratic for a structured group lesson. In closing, remember to tryout as many instructors as you can because not all instructors teach in the same manner and speed you may find comfortable.
