1 GARRETTFORD GOOD NEWS NOVEMBER, 2018 PHILADLEPHIA FLYERS BRING FUN AND IMPORTANT LESSONS TO GARRETTFORD Legendary Flyer Bob The Hound Kelly, a two-time Stanley Cup Champion, visited Garrettford this month to convey an important message to our students. The theme of the assembly was TEAM, an acronym for TEAMWORK, EDUCATION, ATTITUDE AND MOTIVATION. Mr. Kelly discussed the importance of these four things and how each will help the students to succeed at anything they do in life. The assembly was very interactive and the children were really excited. Mr. Kelly showed the students all the safety equipment that the players wear to protect themselves from the puck, which can travel faster than 100 miles per hour. He reinforced how important it is for all of them to wear safety equipment while playing sports, or even riding their bikes or skating. We all had a good laugh when James Martinez had to try to walk across the stage wearing all the hockey pads. It was also funny to see Mr. Quinn and Mrs. Losch race to dress Lucy McGill and Christopher Crump in the hockey equipment. The crowd was cheering them on with a lot of enthusiasm. Every student received a Gritty folder and an autographed picture of Mr. Kelly from his playing days. Participants received shirts and autographed hockey pucks.

3 SENATOR MCGARRIGLE HONORS SOPHIA LEPOSKI AS CITIZEN OF THE MONTH 5-35, was selected as the Garrettford Citizen of the Month. Sophia is involved in chorus and also plays the French horn. She is in the play, running club, art club and reading Olympics. Out of school, Sophia takes karate lessons. She will be receiving her black belt on her birthday, December 12 th. The students received a certificate from Senator McGarrigle and tremendous applause from community members who packed the boardroom for the meeting. Congratulations, Sophia! At the October 9 th UDSD Board Meeting, Senator McGarrigle honored one student from each of Upper Darby s schools as Citizen of the Month. These students were selected by the Principals of the school for being a good role model, active in school activities and someone who makes positive contributions to the school community. 4 farm in Chester County. The farm has 100 acres of tillable land, 50 acres of pastureland and 80 acres of woodland. More than 20 horses are boarded on the farm. The students were able to experience nature first hand. They learned how farms work, what can grow on a farm and how weather affects crop growth. Farmer Bob took the kids on a hayride, and talked with them about how this past year s weather determined the growth of the pumpkin crop which the children could choose from. One of the most memorable lessons about the weather was when Farmer Bob had to pull the school bus with the tractor because it was stuck in the mud from all the rain we have been experiencing. First grade students were treated to a brisk fall day out in the country and they had a wonderful time. Sugartown Strawberries is an approximately 230 acre working Thank you, Farmer Bob, for the tow!!!

5 FIFTH GRADERS TOUR THE WORLD AND NEVER LEAVE PHILADELPHIA students to so many amazing treasures located right in our own backyard. Fifth Grade students were treated to a virtual trip around the world through art on display at the Philadelphia Art Museum. The children had an opportunity to learn about China by visiting a Chinese palace entry hall and seeing many interesting Chinese artifacts. Next, they saw a beautiful rug from Iran. The highlight for many in attendance was when they viewed an incredible collection of armory and weapons from Germany. Overall it was a great experience and everyone is looking forward to their next trip to the Art Museum later this year. MR. BRYDGES CHEERS FOR BOTH SIDES IN FOOTBALL GAME The Art Museum program is part of the fifth grade curriculum and offers great exposure for our On Saturday, October 20 th, the Drexel Hill Raiders played the Ridley Raiders. Several Garrettford students play for the Drexel Hill team and Mr. Brydges son Allen plays for the Ridley team. It was a great game and Mr. Brydges enjoyed cheering for both teams. After the game he was able to introduce his son to the Garrettford

6 players and they all took a photo together to commemorate the day. The players showed great sportsmanship and it was a hard fought game. The picture below now hangs in Mr. Brydges office. Congratulations to all the student athletes for a great job! Thursday by wearing our favorite team shirt or jersey. Friday was school spirt day because our school chooses to be drug free. We all had a lot of fun while supporting a very important message. RED RIBBON WEEK CELEBRATED AT GARRETTFORD During the week of October 22 nd, our school celebrated Red Ribbon Week. The theme this year was Life is your journey, travel drug free. On Monday the students took the school-wide drug free pledge and wore red. On Tuesday students wore their pajamas to school to put drugs to sleep. There were a variety of superhero shirts donned on Wednesday because we have the power to say NO to drugs.
