1 VOLUME 2 ISSUE 1 NOVEMBER 7, 2018 The Oltman Times Oltman s Student Newspaper History of Thanksgiving So that you have something to talk about at the Thanksgiving dinner table By Chase Hiber Happy November, Oltman Raiders! You know what that means? THANKSGIVING! But why do we celebrate this tradition every year? Good question! I m Chase Hiber and this is the history of Thanksgiving. It all began in 1621 when tension between the early Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people was at an all-time high. The Wampanoag started doing something unexpected: they helped the Pilgrims (with help from Squanto) and taught them how to cultivate corn, remove sap, catch fish, and even avoid dangerous plants. After an amazing harvest from the new colony, the colonists invited the Indians that had been so nice to them to a harvest celebrating their new found friends. This led to what we now call the first Thanksgiving. 3 By Zohha Khan After-School Club Updates: Art Club The Art Club is an amazing place to make art and have fun with your peers! They meet every Monday. I, Zohha Khan, interviewed Myla Price and she was telling me how amazing everything is and how she loves the Art Club! I asked her what she likes about art club and she said, I enjoy seeing other people s art, because it s fun to see creative and passionate art! Myla loves to draw animals, but the most recent thing she s drawn is abstract art. Art Club is very proud of their art projects! Art Club is such a wonderful place to relax and make your own one-of-a-kind art! Book and Music Recommendations Sunflower By: Post Malone and Swae Lee Recommendation written by Elizabeth Lee I recommend a song called Sunflower by Post Malone and Swae Lee. This song is the first single of the official album/soundtrack for the new Spider- Man Into the Spider-Verse. The music video is cartoon illustrated and resembles a comic book. The video shows many different versions of spider-man/women. I really like the music! It s very catchy! The music video is meant for the new movie that should be coming out on December 14,2018. Check out the video! It s called Post Malone, Swae Lee- Sunflower. Ratscalibur By: Josh Lieb Recommendation written by Scarlett Rethmeier Eleven year-old Joey has just moved to a new house in the big city with his mom, not excited to leave his old home. But as a housewarming gift, his uncle Patrick has given him a pet rat that can talk? He claims to be Gandorf the Grey, one of the greatest ragic (rat-magic) users in all of Ravalon, the rat world. But Ravalon is threatened by the evil and mysterious Salaman! I recommend this book because it is exciting, funny, and invites you to an entirely new world of ragic (rat magic), animals, fighting, action, and mystery! Find out what happens to Ravalon! Pick up your copy of Ratscalibur today! 3
4 By Helena Yiangou Oltman Sports Spotlight - Volleyball The Oltman Middle School Volleyball team has just finished another awesome season. The girls have worked their hardest, and have established beneficial relationships with their teammates. Myla Price, a player on the 8th Grade team, admires the positive energy that gathers on the court. There is only so much energy on the court, and you have to take it, she says regarding the life that blooms on the court. The 7th Grade coach, Coach Kirchner, speaks highly of her hardworking team. They were all very kind and inclusive, and she noticed a significant improvement in each and every one of them. Half of the team took a volleyball home nightly to practice, she notably states. The 8th grade team also showed remarkable characteristics. The teammates had each other s backs, and they embraced each other s mistakes. As the 8th grade coach, Coach Lower, once said, One person s mistake is the team s mistake. This means that even if you make an error, that is how you learn, and cooperating with others is the way to succeed. Price: My favorite thing a Short Story of the Month By George Molitor The Story of Lil billi Lil billi was a small boi, one that was popular in all his classes. At lunch, he yeeted on other bois with his Fortnite dances. Lil billi had a secret, though he ate birds. Lil billi liked to eat hummingbirds with teriyaki sauce. His friends found out and lil billi was exempted from his friend group. Moral of the story: DON T EAT THINGS THAT SHOULD NOT BE EATEN. 4
5 Oltman Middle School s Halloween Dance By Liya Andom and Elizabeth Lee Oltman Middle School had their first dance of the school year (and in the new building) on October 26th. The money that was raised from the Haunted House was $900! Most of the money will go to the 8th grade WEB leader program and the rest will go to the school. Helena, one of the Haunted House scarers, said, We were having fun scaring people, and it was a great thing for the WEB leaders to come together and bond. We asked some students what they thought about the dance. Zohha K. said, The dance was fun, my friends and I ate food and we went into the Haunted House. The Haunted House was kinda scary but I wasn t really scared. It was interesting, but also spooky. The best part was when we were having fun and laughing together! Now let s talk about the COSTUMES! There were many varieties and quite a few people who entered the costume contest to try for the SCARIEST costume, Most Creative Costume, etc. Check out some of the awesome costumes in the pictures. We hope the dance was fun for all and you enjoyed yourselves! SIGN LANGUAGE WITH KOURTNEY BY KOURTNEY SALAZAR Peace: First hold up two peace signs and put your thumb on your middle finger for each peace sign. Then cross your arms and pull apart. Friend: Using your pointer or index finger of each hand, hook them together. 5
