1 Comet Connection March 7, 2019 Dear Saint Pius X Family and Friends, Yesterday, we observed Ash Wednesday, so we are now officially in the season of Lent, a time of reflection and penance, which prepares us for Christ's Resurrection on Easter Sunday. This is a very Holy time a time for contemplation and a time for personal and thoughtful prayer. People often don t look forward to Lent, possibly because of childhood memories of giving up candy or sitting through weekly Stations of the Cross. Words like sacrifice, discipline, and self-denial, are often used in ways that suggest that Lent is something to be endured rather than a time of grace and spiritual growth, or as Monsignor put it in his homily during Mass, an opportunity for intentional quiet kindness. Have you ever thought of Lent as an annual second chance? Each year we are given six weeks to take a long, loving look at our lives to see if our values and priorities are in line with God s desires for us. Since most of us find that we wander from God s path in one way or another, Lent becomes that second chance a do-over--to return to God with our whole heart. Courtesy of the sources listed below, I want to share two questions that I think provide perspective to help frame a Lenten season of quiet kindness : What can I learn from my children--or share with them--about entering into the season of Lent? What message do I want to offer others, especially my kids, through what I say and do this Lent? Congratulations to Sam Phillips (8)! Sam has advanced to the state level of competition in the National Geographic GeoBee. Way to go, Sam! We wish him the best of luck as he heads to Charlotte on March 29 for the state GeoBee. We are very excited for Sam, and so proud that he is representing Saint Pius X Catholic School in such an outstanding way. Our students were treated to some very special visitors today. The Cheerleaders, Pep Band, and the Leprechaun from the University of Notre Dame stopped by for a pep rally with our kids. Our varsity cheerleaders got to cheer and dance with them. The Irish are in town for the Women s ACC Tournament and were so kind to share some of their time and spirit with us. Although I know this is ACC territory, after the visit today I have to give a GO IRISH to our friends from South Bend. (This is a big step for me: I was born in Ann Arbor, and I am a Xavier University alumnus. My fellow sports fans will understand ) Sincere thanks to our Notre Dame visitors! We are very much looking forward to the St. Pius X Catholic School Biennial Gala Securing Our Future, which will take place Saturday evening. I am grateful to the very hard-working Gala Committee for all their dedication and efforts to make this evening a special one. Also, don t miss your chance to win $5,000 in the SPX Raffle to use toward tuition for the 2019/2020 school year! Get raffle tickets online at the Gala website. You do NOT have to be present at the Gala to win! Click here to visit the Gala website: AND The Saint Pius X School Gala 2019 Silent Auction is OPEN! Bidding has begun. Come on! Come early! 2 Jesus said to them, I am the Bread of Life; whoever comes to me will never hunger Please remember that during Lent, our school community is participating in the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Rice Bowl, a faith-in-action program that gives us the opportunity to uphold a 40-year tradition of praying, fasting, and almsgiving to change the lives of others, which enriches our own lives. The process is simple: Use the cardboard bowl, which was sent home in your Thursday envelope last week, to collect alms (spare change). At the end of Lent, please convert your CRS Rice Bowl contributions to a check made out to St. Pius X Catholic School. *Write CRS Rice Bowl on the memo line and send the check to the school office. It appears it is time for a reminder about haircuts, especially for several of our boys. I see that it has come back into style for boys to wear their hair short on the sides and the back, and long on top. In the barber or stylist chair one might ask for a fade comb over, or a comb over fade, or some other variation of that style. And they do look cool! However, it needs to be a mutually shared priority that these cool hairstyles are also up to the standards and expectations of our student dress code. I appreciate that you will see to it that your son s (or sons ) hair follows the following guidelines: Unconventional haircuts, colors, or styles are prohibited. Hair should be clean, neatly trimmed, and combed. Hair must not fall below eyebrows [at any time] or earlobes and must be cut above the collar. Curly hair must be cropped reasonably close to the head. A Prayer for Ash Wednesday/Beginning Lent God of goodness and mercy, Hear my prayer as I begin this Lenten journey with you. Let me be honest with myself as I look into my heart and soul, noticing the times I turn away from you. Guide me as I humbly seek to repent and return to your love. May humility guide my efforts to be reconciled with you and live forever in your abundant grace? Transform me this Lent, heavenly Father. Give me the strength to commit myself to grow closer to you each day. Amen. Our school is a great and special place because of the people in the buildings, and because of all those who consistently support and partner with us. Thank you to all of our families, and special thanks to our students, our staff, and our volunteers, for all that they do to make Saint Pius X Catholic School such an outstanding place. Many Blessings, Chris Chris Kloesz Principal Mission Statement Saint Pius the Tenth Catholic School Saint Pius the Tenth Catholic School places Christ at the center of all that we do. Partnering with our parents and parish communities, we create a challenging and innovative academic experience that inspires and prepares our students to be capable leaders of positive change.
