FOOD DRIVE FOR SOMERSET COUNTY FOOD BANK The OSS Student Council will collect food the week of November Items needed include: canned meats, stews, Spam and chili (needed most); canned fruits, vegetables, gravy, tuna, mac & cheese, PB&J, hot and cold cereal, pancake mix and any other non- perishable foods. Frozen turkeys will be collected on Monday, November 24th ONLY, and should be dropped off that morning by 8:45 AM. There will be someone at both the Oak Street car loop and the Henry Street entrance to take your frozen turkey from you. All donations will be going to the Food Bank Network of Somerset County. HOLIDAYS FOR CHILDREN DONATIONS DUE THURS., NOV. 20 The OSS Character Education Committee is once again participating in "Holidays for Children," a program that provides families in need with gifts during the holiday season. Each class will be assigned a child for whom they will be responsible. Students are encouraged to donate from their own money, either saved in a piggy bank, earned by doing some extra chores around the house, or earned by doing a special job for someone. This money will be divided evenly amongst the classes and used to purchase gifts for the classes assigned children. Donations must be sent to school via backpack no later than Thursday, November 20th. For further information, please read the letter regarding this program in this week's Friday Folder. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HOLIDAY RECOGNITION PROJECT On December 15th, every staff member will receive a delicious homemade cake. To make this annual tradition a success we need 43 volunteers to bake two cakes for delivery to school on Monday, December 15th, between 8:15-8:45 AM. Volunteers are also needed to receive incoming cakes and to help to pack them up for distribution. If you would like to bake, receive, or pack, please Chris Corrigan at mailto:cpcorrigan@verizon.net. WAMS SPIRITWEAR FOR INCOMING STUDENTS Looking for a great holiday or 5 th grade graduation gift idea? Check out the new WAMS spirit wear on the attached flyer. Easy online ordering now through Sunday, November 16. Orders will be filled approximately 4 weeks AFTER the ordering period has ended. ROCK AROUND THE BLOCK! Our 4th graders were visited by Steve "The Dirtmeister" Tomecek on Tuesday, October 28th, as one of the PTO- sponsored curriculum enhancement programs. Mr. Tomecek is a well renowned geologist, science educator, and author of over 55 books (some of his National Geographic books are featured in our OSS library). The children learned about rocks and minerals, and were able to touch various samples, including a meteorite and a fossilized dinosaur bone. His new National Geographic book, The Dirtmeister's Nitty Gritty Planet Earth, will be out June 2015, and will feature a combination graphic novel- type story with geological education. This assembly supports the 4th grade science curriculum. COLONIAL DAY COMMITTEE CHAIRS: LAST CALL OR CANCEL Colonial Day is in jeopardy of being cancelled due to lack of committee chairs. The event is scheduled for April 24th. Ideally, 2 volunteers are needed to help plan and organize this highly anticipated event. There is a very thorough binder that outlines everything you need to do leading up to the event as well as on the day of the event. Kick off the holiday season in a healthy way Register today for the WAMS Turkey Trot 5K & 1 Mile Health Walk. The event takes place Sunday, November 23, at Mountain Park, located at Martinsville & Mountain Roads (near Pingry School) in Basking Ridge. 4 TURKEY/FOOD DRIVE Oak Street School Student Council is having a Turkey/Food Drive. We are collecting foods such as: canned meats, stews, Spam and chili (these are the items they need most); canned fruits, vegetables, gravy and tuna; mac & cheese, peanut butter & jelly, hot and cold cereal, pancake mix and any other non-perishable foods beginning on November 17 th - 24th. On Monday, November 24th only we will collect frozen turkeys. Please have the turkeys at the school by 8:45 AM. Thank you! TURKEYS MUST BE FROZEN All collections will benefit the Somerset County Food Bank
