Thank you to all the sponsors, volunteers and participants who made this day so successful. I am grateful to the dedication each of you show to your student and St. Apollinaris Catholic School. In our technology meeting this week, so many great ideas evolved. Thank you to SheriAnn Pfitzmann who offered her research and education in the area of technology. A thank you for the parents who attended the meeting, Mr. Gardner, Mr. Carr and Mrs. Herman. We all agreed that utilizing what we have is key. We will have an assessment of our technology program, this week. From there we will devise a technology plan to have St. A s become a 21st Century learning environment for our students. Also, in the area of Mathletics and Catholic Telemedia Network, we are excited to have received our professional development and we will be starting Mathletics in the coming weeks. You will receive a user name and password from your child, which will allow him / her to access the program from home. I am so excited to start this. In addition, School Speak is up and running. We are receiving professional development and homework will be posted on School Speak, beginning January October 28 is a minimum day, which will be our Halloween parade. Costumes should not be overly scary. This is all in fun and not meant to frighten the students. Please see the information in this

In my high school senior year, I was voted class clown. 5. I was a swimming instructor for disabled children. Who am I???? Mrs. Andrews, grade 4!!! A new feature to our newsletter... Guess Who I am???? (Your choices are any faculty or staff member of St. A's.) 1. I was the only girl on the 8th grade baseball team. 2. I collect antique door knobs. 3. I was named Health Educator of the Year. 4. I have run four marathons (yes 26.2 miles!). 5. I worked for the U.S. Government Census Bureau Who am I???? Find out in the next Shamrock!!! We will be happy to send home the news to you each Thursday with your child. We want everyone to know the amazing things going on at St. Apollinaris Catholic School. Reminder The five signature pages from the handbook are due into the office as soon as possible. Reminder from Sister Philomena It s time once again to have your Friday evening conversations with your children and decide the Mass you plan to attend on Sunday. Sunday Mass needs to be part of your weekly schedule. Jesus gives all of us the invitation to come to his weekly banquet and it is important that we are there. It s hard to say No. I know and trust that you will all do your best. Looking forward to seeing each one of you, Sunday and every Sunday. Thanks!
3 3 Shamrock Newsletter Walk-a-thon Fun for Everyone! Congratulations to all involved with the walk-a-thon this year! So many parents volunteered their time, students put their best foot forward, and sponsors were very generous in support of our wonderful school. We will have a more detailed wrapup in the coming weeks, including class party winners, top mileage winners, fundraising totals, and much more. The bicycle winners for top donation collection per class were already announced at the Walk-a-thon. They include: Kindergarten Conor McKeown, 1 st grade Dante Leonardi, 2 nd Sarah Reynolds, 3 rd CJ Tiebout, 4 th Otto Stahlecker, 5 th Angelita Massey, 6 th Grace Wahle, 7 th Isabella Leonardi, 8 th Ashley McLeod. Congratulations to all of the winners! More results next week but overall, it was a beautiful day full of fitness and fun! Save the Date There will be a special celebration honoring Monsignor Joe on October 29, 2011 at 4:30pm Mass, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. Halloween Halloween is soon approaching and excitement is in the air. While you are shopping for Halloween costumes, please keep in mind the following guidelines for school: no grotesque characters, cross-dressing, blood or gore, skateboards, roller skates, or play weapons. Full face masks (covering the entire face cannot be worn for safety reasons). Remember to have your child dress in a tasteful costume. Please do your best to ensure that these guidelines are followed for a fun and safe day. Children who do not wear costumes to school must wear their regular uniform. Our school s celebration will be on Friday, October 28, 2011, a minimum day. The dismissal is at 12:40pm (K-8). There will be a Halloween parade at 11:00am. Library News In an effort to stock our library with new books we are continuing the Birthday Book Club. When your child has a birthday they may donate a favorite hardback book to the library. Their picture will be placed in the book with a special birthday bookplate. Their picture will also appear on the Birthday Book Club wall. Thank you to Lexie and Kayla deleuze for their generous donation of Rick Riordan's The Son of Neptune. This book is already a hit. Thank you! The book fair is only a month away! I am so excited about the books this year. We will have the brand new Diary of a Wimpy Kid at the fair. The dates are November The theme will be Reading is Out of This World! Information on how to volunteer will be coming soon.
4 4 Shamrock Newsletter Homework Club This year, Homework Club will be available Mondays through Thursdays on regularly scheduled school days. We are offering this program for students in grades 4 through 8. It will be an opportunity for students to do their homework in a quiet setting. We have openings for fourteen (14) students on a first come, first serve basis. Those accepted in Homework Club will have to be signed in Extended Care. At that time, they will be given a snack and taken to a quiet designated area to do homework for one hour (3:15 to 4:15pm). Students will be supervised by an Extended Care aide and will be charged to Extended Care hourly rate. If your child is already on Plan A or Plan B, that rate will apply, but you must also sign your child up on the attached form. You will be notified if your child has been accepted or if they are on a waiting list should we have more than fourteen sign-ups. Any questions regarding Homework Club may be directed to Francine Chouinard at or Spelling Bee Date Set The Annual St. Apollinaris Spelling Bee will be held on Tuesday, November 8 th in the Hall after dropoff. Students in the 5 th -8 th grades will take qualifying tests, then optional study sessions will begin. For students who would like to get a jump on their spelling, go to for the 2012 study test. I am planning to hold optional morning study sessions. I will be asking every parent whose child(ren) are participating to help me in some way, either by assisting with our study sessions, setting up the hall prior to the Bee, or breaking down the hall at the conclusion of the Bee. Your accounts have been set up and they are ready for you to access. On this site you will be able to order scrip, reload selected cards purchased through St. Apollinaris School, or download certain Scrip certificates such as Home Depot to your home computer. You now have the option to pay through Presto-Paychecking account debit, on the shopwithscrip.com website, a fully secure way to pay, or bring a check to the school office. If you place an order with shopwithscrip.com and you choose not to use the Presto-Pay option, you must bring a check to the office in order for your scrip to be released and shipped. The first time you use Presto-Pay, Shopwithscrip will issue you an authorization code. You will need to me this code so I may activate this service for future purchases. Please note: We will continue to sell and stock the same items in the office for your convenience. How do I access my account? 1. Log onto shopwithscrip.com 2. Click my account in the top bar 3. Your username will be your and your password will be your area code and phone number listed with the school. You may change this when you log in. If you had previously signed up with shopwithscrip.com, your username and password will remain the same. On this site you will have access to all the latest information, new and discontinued scrip, as well as bonus percentages being offered. This should be especially helpful during the holiday seasons, as placing and pre-ordering your large orders online will ensure availability. Scrip Updates: Chevy s, Acapulco and El Torito have filed bankruptcy. If you have any of these cards, please use them soon. YO Belle is Back! $10 cards for 15% - On sale now! Nordstroms and Quiznos are available for special order only. Marie Callender s: As you know, the Napa Marie Callender s has closed. If you have friends or family members that live in one of the listed areas or you yourself are traveling to one of the following areas, we are selling our $25 Marie Callender s scrip for $22. Marie Callender s is still open in Sacramento, Chico, Redding, Fresno, Morgan Hill, San Jose, Sunnyvale and countless areas in Southern California. Costume Discounters - 7.2% Spirit Halloween 7.8% Disney Store 1.8% Oriental Trading 7.8% Lillian Vernon 6% All you need to do is sign up at escrip.com, follow the prompts and link any major credit cards you shop with. Click on online mall and choose from one of the hundreds of major retailers offered and start shopping. We will receive a monthly report with your earnings that will credit to your scrip obligation. Remember, you must enter your store through the online mall at escrip.com in order to receive credit. Check it out! escrip: If you have not updated your credit card information, including expiration dates on escrip.com, please do so now to ensure continued credit. One Cause Visa: Apply for a One-Cause Visa. Log onto to apply or call One percent of your purchases go back to your Scrip account. Lucky: Please remember to turn in your Lucky receipts if you use the S.H.A.R.E.S card. Write your name on them and place them in the Scrip box located in the office. If you need a S.H.A.R.E.S Card, we have them in the office for pick up. Nob Hill/Raley s- We have the Nob Hill/Raley s Community Cards in the office. These work much like the Safeway Club Card. When you swipe them at the time of check out a percentage is given to your scrip account. Use these in combination with Scrip and receive even more. Angela McWilliams Scrip Coordinator amcwilliams.scrip@gmail.com ATHLETIC NEWS Volleyball Play-offs are underway and last weekend s games proved that our Saint A s teams are ready to play The 5th Grade girls lost their matches, but continued to improve their overall game. They are now even more hungry to win in the play-offs on Wednesday night, at Saint A s, 5:15pm. If victorious, check the board at school for their next games. The 6 th grade girls played the best match of their season, with a dominate victory against St. John Healdsburg. The girls were very consistent, winning the match in two games. They
7 7 Shamrock Newsletter started play-offs on Monday night against Santa Rose, and played with determination, but lost. Great season girls your coaches are very proud! 7th grade girls lost to St. Eugene, but not without a fight, and then came back to beat Saint John Napa with confidence in 2 straight games. This team is peaking at just the right time for playoffs! They played at Saint Helena on Tuesday night at 5:15PM. Check the board at school for further games. The 5 th and 6 th grade boys - Lost their matches, but had very lengthy rallies and good communication, and took both matches to 3 games. Coach Newman said James Bell was very aggressive with his returns/digs, and the boys are ready for play-offs. They play on Saturday at 11:45 in Santa Rosa. The 7 th grade boys had post-walk-a-thon legs at the beginning of their 9:00 AM match against rival St. Eugene, but as they warmed up they had their opponent on the run AGAIN by the third game. They exchanged match point twice, but luck was on the other side this time. They went on to beat Saint John Napa in two straight games. The boys play on Saturday in Santa Rosa at 3:15PM Our Spotlight team is the 8 th grade girls! They traveled to Santa Rosa, and after working hard, but losing to Saint Francis, they came together as a team and played better than ever to beat the number one ranked team, Saint John s Napa. These girls have really put all the elements together now serving, passing, setting, hitting and calling the ball. They will benefit from all their great team play this week at play-offs. They played at 6:00 PM in Santa Rosa on Tuesday. Check board at school for their next games. Time to Play Hoops! Our 7 th and 8 th grade basketball teams will start their season next week. A master schedule will be posted in the Bulletin Board at school, and we encourage everyone to come and cheer for our teams! Our first games will be: 7 th grade girls, 4:30PM, Monday, 10/17 at home 8 th grade girls, 7:00PM, Monday, 10/17 at home 7 th grade boys, 6:15 PM, Monday, 10/17 at Saint Helena
