4 Kids and Sports Million kids participate in sports each year. 65% of kids join sports to spend time with their friends. Only 20% say skill improvement is reason they participate 75% of athletes drop out of sports by age 13, Why? They say sports are no longer FUN for them. #1 reason kids get tired of sports: Parental expectation and attitudes. Expectations are often set too high and often lead to a child s failure in a sport rather than success. Injuries will happen in sports. Each year over 1 million injuries reported from sports activities. Most head injuries reported from Bicycling and Skating.
5 Benefits for Kids in Sports 1. Attendance in school 2. Community and civic minded 3. Get in less trouble (more discipline oriented) 4. More successful in work place (teamwork, chain of command) 5. Acquire leadership and communication skills
6 Why should Kids Play Sports? Physical Activity: Getting outside, away from coach and video games. Social Skills: Communication with coach and teammates benefits them throughout their life. Self-Esteem: Players learn to trust own abilities and learn what it takes to improve and grow a desire to push themselves. Academic Success: Playing on a HS Sports Team increases a young woman s chance of College Graduating by 41% Lifelong Health: Promotes health and wellness throughout life.
