1 Thank you for your interest in auditioning for our Starbound Talent Competition at The EX. The Red River Ex is committed to showcasing the talents of Manitobans, for Manitobans. The talent competition is our commitment upholding our mandate to identify, develop and showcase young performers for the rest of our community. This year we are looking for performers ages years old to perform on the Main Stage at the 2019 Red River Ex. This year s youth talent competition will be held on Sunday, June 23, 2019! HERE S HOW IT WORKS: 1. Read the rules and regulations to see how your talent might fit. 2. Submit the registration form, an audition video and pay your entry fee online. Each entrant is provided with two gate passes (value $15 each) Should you not be accepted to perform in the show, you may keep the two gate passes and use them to come to The EX any day you wish. 4. Wait to hear if you ve been accepted into the show. You will be contacted by Friday, June 1, Due to time limitations, we are only able to accept performances in each category. 5. Once you ve been selected to perform, a panel of professional judges will enjoy watching your talents. 6. Who knows, you could take home up to $3,000 in prize money! Deadline to submit your registration form, video audition and entry fee is: WEDNESDAY, MAY 29. COST TO ENTER: Solo: $15 total along with your entrance fee, you will receive two gate tickets. These gate tickets must be used on the competition day. Should you not be selected to perform in the competition, you may keep the two gate tickets and use them on any day during the 2019 Red River Ex.

2 Group (2 or more performers): $30 total along with your entrance fee, you will receive two gate tickets per person for use on the competition day. Should you not be selected to perform in the competition, you may keep the two gate tickets and use them on any day during the 2019 Red River Ex. All passes will be mailed out after June 1, 2019 to the contact person noted on the entry form. HOW TO APPLY: 1. Use our online entry form and payment system. Start by reading the Rules & Regulations below. Fill in the online registration form. Send us a link to your audition video preferably uploaded to Youtube. If this is a problem, let us know and we can make other arrangements to get your video. Payment instructions will follow once you hit the SUBMIT button CONTESTANT RULES: 1. Age limits are 11 through 18 years, inclusive. All contestants must be at least 11 years of age, and not more than 18 years of age at opening date of the Red River Exhibition (June 14, 2019). All contestants must be a resident of Manitoba. 2. This contest is not open to professionals. A professional is defined as anyone who is a union member, has a professional manager or whose principle and supporting income is derived from performing. A professional entertainer is hereby defined as one who earns more than half of his/her normal living expenses by performing in any of the categories of competition. If you have been hired (on contract) by the Red River Ex to perform during the 10-days of the Red River Ex, you are not permitted to enter the Starbound Talent contest. 3. Any act running over 3 minutes will be disqualified. An act is timed from the first vocal utterance in a vocal act, the first body movement in a dance act, and the entirety of any other act. Timing does not include the emcee s spoken introduction. 4. Acts using machetes, knives, etc. will not be accepted. Baton twirlers may enter (note: stage ceiling height restrictions) but fire baton talent will not be permitted. 5. No fire, smoke, or smoke effect will be allowed on stage during the Red River Ex. 6. Performers may enter a maximum of two categories providing your talent fits those two categories. 7. All performers are responsible for providing their own background music (if required) to the Red River Ex by Friday, June 7, Sound checks will not be provided. Live accompanists are not permitted.

3 8. Your act must remain the same as the audition submission. Members of a group act may drop out without penalty, unless it changes the act from a group to a solo but no members may be added without requalifying. 9. The Red River Exhibition reserves the right to limit the number of acts entered in any one category due to timing limitations. Similarly, the committee, at their discretion, reserves the right to disqualify any act deemed to be considered offensive, objectionable or dangerous. 10. All props must be inanimate, with the exception of those used by a magician. 11. For contestants entered in any vocal act, accompaniment tracks with vocal utterances are strictly prohibited. This includes recorded live voices and voices that are produced and recorded synthetically (i.e. synthesizers or digitally sampled). Any background vocals = Disqualification. 12. There must be no taps or blatant tap effects on the recording used by a tap dancer or a hard-soled Irish style dancer. (Just as in the vocal category you are not allowed to have background vocals when that is what you are being judged on.) 13. In Instrumental, all sounds must be created live on stage. Absolutely no preprogrammed music is allowed. 14. Accompanists are not permitted. 15. An individual cannot be a part of an act at the Red River Ex, if that individual does not appear in the audition video. 16. Judges will be instructed to consider the appropriateness of material used in competition. The committee strongly recommends that all presentations be tasteful and appropriate for the contestant s age and for a family entertainment venue. 17. All contestants may only enter and exit from stage left and right. No act may exit or enter from the front or the back of the stage before, during or after the act. 18. Anything thrown off the stage at any time will be cause for immediate disqualification. 19. Any act invited to perform as a vocal act will be subject to disqualification if the act adds self-accompaniment as it changes the nature of the act to a variety act and therefore would have required the act to have re-qualified at the audition level. Likewise, a variety act cannot change category to a vocal act by dropping the accompaniment without requalifying at the audition level. The following are policies in place for the Starbound Talent Contest and will be strictly adhered to:

4 A selection committee, comprised of individuals proficient in the performing arts, will screen the video auditions. Each contestant will be notified if they have or have not been accepted into the competition by Friday, June 1, Contestants must be available to perform at the Red River Ex on Sunday, June 23. The contest will take the full day. Please be prepared to be available from 10:30 am to 8:30 pm on Sunday, June 23. We will be in a position to narrow down that timeframe by (approx.) Monday, June 3, Judges are not allowed to discuss contestants and/or acts with anyone other than those on the Judges panel. Please do not approach judges for explanations regarding their decisions. Anyone attempting to discuss an act with a judge before, during or after a contest will be disqualified. Any protest concerning rule violations must be made prior to the announcement of the winners. Once the winners are announced, the decisions of the judges at the Red River Ex Starbound Youth Talent contest are final. Studio/School Teachers should be responsible for control of parents and/or contestants. Violation of this rule may jeopardize the contestants eligibility. Neither the Youth Talent committee nor judges will tolerate offensive conduct by participants, teachers, parents, or associates. Such conduct can result in future expulsion from the Red River Ex Starbound Youth Talent. THE FOLLOWING ARE THE ACT CATEGORIES and their descriptions: 1. VOCAL (Stand and Sing ONLY): Shall consist of a solo by an individual vocalist or group performance of up to and including 15 performers max. Live instrumental accompaniment is not permitted. No vocalist may play any musical instrument during the vocal performance. Acapella performers who only sing will be included in this category. All performers on the stage must meet the age qualifications of the Starbound Youth Talent Contest. ACCOMPANIMENT TRACKS WITH VOCAL UTTERANCES ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED. THIS INCLUDES RECORDED LIVE VOICES AND VOICES THAT ARE PRODUCED AND RECORDED SYNTHETICALLY ( i.e. Synthesizers and /or digitally sampled). 2. DANCE (No Singing): Shall consist of a solo performance by one dancer or a group performance of up to and including 15 performers (note the stage size limitations). All performers on the stage must meet the age qualifications of the Starbound Youth Talent Contest. There must be no tap or blatant tap effects on a taped recording used by a dancer performing a tap dance or an Irish dance (hard soled). Accompanists are not permitted. A maximum of two acrobatic or gymnastic movements are allowed per dance performance. 3. INSTRUMENTAL SOLO/GROUP OR BAND: Shall consist of solo instrumental performance or a group of instrumentalists of up to and including 15 performers max. The contestant(s)

5 must create all sounds live on stage. No recorded accompaniment is allowed. Singers accompanying band members or soloists who also play an instrument are permitted in this category. All performers on the stage must meet the age qualifications of the Starbound Youth Talent Contest. In the use of any electronic keyboard, pre-programmed music is not allowed. 8. VARIETY: Shall consist of a solo performance or a group of performers up to and including 15 performers max. All performers on the stage must meet the age qualifications of the Starbound Youth Talent Contest. The talent must not be described in other categories. The following types of performances are permitted in this category: song and dance (musical theatre), magic, juggling, ventriloquism, baton twirling (be cautious of stage ceiling height), acro, gymnastics, hoola hooping, martial arts etc. Pre recorded vocals of any kind are not allowed. Performers who fit the description of another category may not appear in the Variety category. Category combinations must remain exactly as shown on your audition video. MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE LENGTH FOR ALL CATEOGRIES IS 3 MINUTES NO EXCEPTIONS CATEGORY PRIZES: Dance: 1 st place: $1,000 Vocal: 1 st place: $1,000 Instrumental: 1 st place: $1,000 Variety: 1 st place: $1,000 The first place and second place winner in each category will qualify for the finals. The finals will take place between 6 7 pm on Sunday, June 23, Once the finals are complete, the following overall awards will be presented. FINAL AWARD PRIZES: Overall 1 st place: $2,000 + trophy Overall 2 nd place: $1,000 + plaque Overall 3 rd place: $500 + plaque
