2 Student Led Conferences This is a new event in our school and the purpose is the allow the students their own voice in sharing their learning journey with you. In most schools around New Zealand this kind of reporting, in some format, is part of the reporting process. There will be a formal written report coming home near the end of Term 4. When will it be? 1 and 14 September from pm How long will it be for? 20 minute appointments How will it be organised? In each class there are 20 minute appointment slots, and during one slot there will be four tables set up, so four student led conferences happen at the same time Who will lead the student led conference? Your child How will my child be able to lead the student led conference? Teachers will be training the students in selecting work that shows their learning and teaching them how to talk with you about their learning, where they are at and what is next for them. When will I talk with the teacher privately? There is no time during the Student led conferences for teacher and parent conversations, if you want this opportunity to meet with the teacher privately, please arrange that at a separate time. How do I sign up? More information will be sent out to you soon about booking an appointment and more detail about what to expect and how to support your child. News from the Classes Room 1 In Room 1, we are learning about procedures and how to write them. We started off by looking at how we make popcorn and what the correct procedure for it will be. We took photos as we made the popcorn and these now act as a picture prompt in class. The children love mixing up the photos, and having to put them back in the correct order. Since making the popcorn, we have also made jelly and we have worked on writing procedures for brushing our teeth and making our beds. Ask your child to show you how they do it at home! 2

3 Room 2 We are continuing to learn about microorganisms and were delighted to have Agnieszka McAndrews visit the class. She is a microbiologist and talked to Room 2 about the microbes on their hands, and explained the importance of handwashing using UV light. Room As an extension to our unit on Constructions, Room students are making miniature bows out of bamboo. This process has required considerable patience and persistence as many bows have broken during testing. The goal is to develop construction skills and improve the performance of each bow through testing and remodelling. We have set up an indoor testing range in class, and also take the bows outside for distance shooting. No animals have been harmed in this process, and we are having a lot of fun. Paper Shaper show Later this term, Wednesday September, we are planning to take the children to a puppet performance, in Napier. You can google the show, it looks amazing! The play is directed by Peter Wilson, puppet designer is Tim Wilson and the music is by Gareth Farr. The show is produced by the Little Dog barking company, and is touring NZ after returning from

4 performing in China and South Korea at arts festivals. We will be travelling by bus, and having a picnic lunch along the Napier waterfront before returning to school. News from the Board of Trustees We have set an election date, 20 September for our BOT election process. We are pleased that Margie Evans is our returning officer and parents in the school will receive your voting papers in the mail. To assist the community in BOT communication, we wish to advise you that we have set up a BOT address. If you want to contact us, please use this address patokaschoolbot@gmail.com Enviroschool update The Edible garden team, Lilla, Millie, Denise, Gus and Lexie, this week planted the first of the vegetables selected by the children in all the classes. Last week they surveyed their classes about what the children would like to grow (and eat!). They did a great job and many thanks to Kate, our great gardener, for helping make this happen. 4
