Ramapo Senior Activity Center Butterfly Winter 2019 Ramapo Senior Activity Center 484 New Hempstead Road New City, NY Phone: (845) ; The Ramapo Senior Centers Program is a Division of Meals on Wheels Programs & Services of Rockland County. Programs funded in part by the Administration on Aging, New York State Office for the Aging, Rockland County Office for the Aging, donations, grants and fees.
Message from the Manager Hello Ramapo members, friends & families- Despite the frigid weather, Ramapo has started 2019 with some fun activities, outings, and of course, parties! As we celebrate, though, it is clear that these festive occasions are much more than food, music and decorations. Our beach party in honor of our members who are 90+ years old was all the more fun because our friends from the North Rockland Center were able to join us. Our Super Bowl party was a big hit not only because of the delicious food from Big Daddy s Homeplate BBQ, but also because we turned it into our first Soup er Bowl party by collecting soup and other non-perishable food items for People to People throughout the week. I love that Ramapo is not just a place to have fun, but a center filled with meaning in all that we do. Ramapo members collected several bags of non-perishable food items to donate to a local food pantry.
On February 14th, we will be having our annual Open House Pizza Party. Any member that brings a guest who is eligible to become a member will be entered into a special raffle for a $25 gift card. There s a flyer in this newsletter so you can share the details with friends and neighbors that might be interested. I will be happy to provide flyers to anyone who would like to hang them on community bulletin boards in apartment buildings, stores, doctor offices, etc. For anyone who does not have a Ramapo shirt, or would like another one, the deadline to order is Friday, February 15. The shirts are $17 and there is an order form included in this newsletter. Thursdays have been designated as Center Spirit Days and all members are asked to wear their Ramapo shirts (or something blue). We also wear the shirts on center trips so be have sure to have a spare just in case. Want to get your picture in this newsletter? Send me a photo of you wearing your Ramapo shirt while out and about and it will be included in a future issue. The photo can be from here in Rockland County, but I d love to see who will travel the furthest in Ramapo attire! If you have not tried our new exercise machine yet, please stop by to check it out. Our members are enjoying the NuStep which was given to our center as part of grant. It s a good workout, but easy enough for anyone to use. Sign ups to use the machine are first-come, firstserved. Fondly, Janice Ramapo Center extends a warm welcome to our newest members, Annie Davis and Marion Schwartz, our spring intern, Kelly McCauley, and Meals on Wheels of Rockland County CEO, Julia Schwartz-Leeper. It s a pleasure to have you all on board!

Events with Eve (The following is a compilation of recent events by Ramapo member Eve Weissman.) Here is a short run down on happenings at the center beginning with September. Of course, the center was closed September 1 st for Labor Day. We went to the Empire Casino on September 5 th. The senior picnic on the 14 th was postponed, so those who DID attend the center on the 14th went on a surprise trip. We wound up at the Palisades Mall. We went on the Ferris Wheel and the Merry-Go-Round. On September 20 th, some of us went to the Nyack Farmers Market. We had a major party for Miss Johnnie s 101st birthday. A great time was had by all. Boot Camp raised a lot of money for Meals on Wheels. On September 27 th, students from Nyack College came to help us exercise. It was fun. On Friday, September 28 th, Aileen taught us how to make fancy covers for toilet paper rolls but you don t use them, they are for show. We started October by the club getting their flu shots. On October 3 rd, we took a trip to Kedem Winery. We all got a sample to taste. Yummy! Our usual trip was to Cracker Barrel. The food was wonderful as usual and their store had a little of everything. We had our bake sale on October 8 th. On October 11 th, we had some students from Nyack College to show us a few exercises we can do on our own. October 12 th, we made no-bake pies with Aileen. It was fun. On October 19 th, we went to Walmart and got some good sales. On October 23 rd, we went on a delightful hayride at Demarest Farms. The weather could not have been more perfect. We got pumpkins, cider and donuts. A wonderful time was had by all. October 25 th brought out Oktoberfest at Kruckers in Pomona. There was all the food you wanted, beer and dancing. A good time was had by all. Before Oktoberfest, in the morning, we had a celebration for Mary s 99 th birthday. On October 26 th, we all had a fantastic time at Senior Olympics sponsored by Regeneron. We played volleyball, jeopardy and bingo! As usual, we had our Fall Open House with a free brunch. It was also a Halloween contest. We had devils, angels and a lottery ticket. There were also a lot of witches. (continued on next page)
(continued from previous page) We started November by going to the Nyack Farmers Market. They had some good deals there. On November 2 nd, we took a trip to the Super Walmart in Monroe. Boy, that store is huge! On the 5 th, we went to Christmas Tree Shops. There was a very nice concert at Nauraushaun Presbyterian Church. Then on November 30 th, we went to lunch at Mia Cucina. It was very nice and they served a lot of food. No one left hungry and a lot of us took home doggie bags. On December 5 th, we again went to Westchester Dinner Theatre to see A Christmas Carol. A good time was had by all. On December 7 th, we went to the West Nyack Library for some Origami we made baskets and penguins. It was fun. We also celebrated Hanukkah with a nice meal. On December 10 th we went shopping at the Super Walmart and then had lunch at Chili s. We had a super celebration for Evelyn s 100 th birthday on December 13 th. We had our Christmas meal on December 18 th. As usual, we had a super time at our holiday party at Casa Mia on December 19 th. December 28 th we went on a mystery trip to the Clarkstown Police Department. It was very interesting. I hope you all had a wonderful New Year s Eve! See you in 2019! -Eve

Ramapo Remembers Mrs. Johnnie Sheffield September 24, 1917 November 24, 2018 Johnnie joined Ramapo Senior Activity Center at the age of 99 and quickly became of our of most active members. Johnnie enjoyed our outings to restaurants, picnics, movies and wineries. In 2018, she was one of our top Boot Camp fundraisers. Johnnie loved to play bingo and Pokeno. She almost always had a lollipop in her mouth and always had candy to share with her friends at the center and the children who lived in her building. Johnnie always looked stylish; her nails were always done and she had a shoe collection that she knew I was quite envious of. She had impeccable penmanship. Johnnie taught us to always speak our minds and never hold a grudge. Johnnie will truly be missed.
*Snack bar: The snack bar is open for breakfast and lunch on weekends and Monday holidays. Dinner is not provided at the snack bar on any night.
