1 MARTIN LUTHER KING COMMUNITY COALITION P.O. Box Pasadena, CA (626) pasadenamlk.org MEMORANDUM Date: October 24, 2018 To: The Teachers of the Pasadena Unified School District, Private Schools & Community From: The MLK Community Coalition: Christopher Walker, Vice President Re: Essay, Art, and Visual &Performing Art Contests on the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Martin Luther King Community Coalition has been sponsoring the Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay and Art/Poster Contests for the past 34 years here in the Pasadena/Altadena/Sierra Madre/La Canada communities. The Pasadena Unified School District, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, The City of Pasadena, along with some private schools, have been very supportive of our efforts. This year, we will have one theme for all grade levels, elementary, middle and high school: The Meaning of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s a Beloved Community. Again, we added the performing arts category to our contest. Students may interpret the theme through dance, poetry recitation/spoken word, music and video production. We believe your commitment to the great legacy that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. left us is the reason we get the support we do every year. As volunteers, we want to do what we can to bring his dreams to reality. The effort of students year after year in the language and creative arts demonstrate what they can do to keep Dr. King s dreams alive. This experience not only increases students knowledge about Dr. King, but will enhance their language skills, creative skills, self-esteem, and character. Blessed be the hand that prepares a pleasure for a child, for there is no saying when and where it may bloom forth, says Douglas Jerrold, and we agree. A member of our committee will welcome the opportunity to come and talk with you and your class about the contest and Dr. King. Please call Dr. David Jacobs at (626) and he will gladly answer your concerns, as well as schedule an appointment. Entry Form Directions are included (Necessary for essay to be read): 1.
