1 Evento Wearable Art Handbook 2013 Firstly, thank you for entering our Wearable art show. This is our 17th year of running this competition and it is going to be amazing; bigger and better than ever before! Study the time line carefully as you must be able to attend all of the rehearsals and the photo shoot. Mark these dates in your calendar. Note that there are extra rehearsals for your model. Please make sure your model can attend these. Also carefully read your sections page and make sure that you understand your sections guidelines. If you have any questions please get in contact with us. We wouldn't have a show without you so here is your chance to make something fantastic and wow the audience! Your costume must be original and exclusive to our show and is not to be used in any other competition or show. We do not allow: Pets Anything slippery or messy Pyrotechnics, fire or water Real or realistic looking weapons Dry ice Parents in the back stage area Costumes that have been used in other shows Costumes designed and made for Evento to be used in other wearable art competitions. This competition is extremely popular! 2 Prizes 1st, 2nd and 3rd for each section plus a performance prize for each section that goes to the model. A recycling prize for each section for the best use of recycled materials. 2 textile awards; 1 for construction and 1 for innovative use of textiles A year 9 award A male award Runner up to supreme and supreme Design scholarship Our design scholarship is open to any student who enters our show, but it is optional (ie. You don t have to apply for this). Students will need to submit a 12 page A3 portfolio consisting of: 4 pages research, 4 pages ideas, 4 pages development. The deadline for submitting this is July 20 th (At the photo shoot). This will be judged by an independent judge and the winner will be announced at the show. Models: Please remember that this is not a static display and the goal of modelling is to bring your design to life! Please work with your model, share ideas on how to best present the work, think about movements that will enhance your work. Your model will have several minutes on the stage. She does not want to be standing still all this time, be aware that performance will be taken into consideration during the judging. As an incentive for your model (or yourself if you are modelling your own work) we are offering a prize for the Best Performance by a model in each of the design sections. This will be an extra prize in each section and will be judged separately. If you have a particular look in mind for your models hair, remember this is to be your work also and up to you to create. Body paint is permitted. If you are designing and modelling your own work you may bring a helper with you. Your helper must be from your peer group, not a parent.

3 Show Time-line May 5 th 1pm 3pm A free work shop with Fifi Colstron from WOW to be held at the FAHS art room, a highly recommended workshop to get some inside tips and advice. July 20th & 21 st (Middle weekend of the July School holidays) All entries are to be photographed for the program at FAHS. It must be 100% finished. Written work (a 40 word write up about your design) is to be handed in at this point. You may save your work to a disk or it to us. Portfolios are also to be submitted; either the small 4 page one showing your design development, or the large 12 page version for the Design Scholarship. Your costume must meet the requirements ie. fit through a door, up be able to be worn up and down stairs. Confirmation of your entry will be given at the photo shoot if compliance has been met. July 28th - Practise for all models at FAHS, time to be advised August 4th - Practise for all models at FAHS, time to be advised August 7th 6.30pm - Full technical rehearsal at Manfield stadium for all sections. This is compulsory for all entries. This is not a dress rehearsal but please make sure you bring anything that you need to practise with i.e. shoes, masks. Both the designer and model need to be at this rehearsal. Bring something to eat and drink, please be on time. August 8th 6.30pm - Full dress rehearsal at Manfield stadium for all sections. This is compulsory for all entries. Your costumes may be left in designated areas at Manfeild overnight. Both the designer and model need to be at this rehearsal. Bring something to eat and drink, please be on time. August 9th - Full dress rehearsal with audience A full dress rehearsal with a student audience. Doors will open to designers and models at 5pm. Show will start at 6.30pm August 10 th - Show time! The doors will open to designers and models at 6pm. All models from all sections must be ready by 7pm. Show starts at 7.30 sharp. Prizegiving will happen after all of the sections have been seen, so you will stay in costume until the end of the show. August 11th 1pm Feilding Art Centre All costumes that gained a place are required at the Feilding Art Centre where they will be on display for two weeks to the public.

4 Please think carefully about how wearable your costume is, how will your model put it on? Make sure that your fastenings are concealed and that the whole costume stays together when worn. Your costume must be wearable, fit through single doorways and be safely worn up and down several flights of stairs and around the stage you will be disqualified if your costume does not fit this requirement. The costume must allow you to see clearly so that you are able to model it safely and unaided. You are not allowed to use glitter or sequins on your costume. This is a requirement from Manfield Park to help preserve the floor. You will be required to provide your own model. Please choose your model carefully as a portion of the judging is based upon stage presentation/performance. A good model will bring your design to life! If you need assistance in finding a model, let us know and we will help you. If you do not want to keep your costume or are unable to please donate it to us rather than throwing it out. We are asked to put on displays and shows frequently and it would be great to have a collection of costumes for this. Your written work is a compulsory part of the show and is required by July 20th but could be ed to us earlier. Please put it on to a disk or flash drive to make it easier for us. Your costume must have a title and we need 40 words or less describing your costume. This just needs to be brief we will edit your work if necessary. A brief portfolio is also a requirement.. This involves using 3 A3 pages to illustrate your research, ideas and concept development. This is not intended to be an onorous task, rather it should be what you are doing anyway. The portfolio itself will not be judged. It is intended to aid the judges to see how you have been inspired. If you wish to apply for the design Scholarship, you must submit a larger portfolio (around 12 pages). If you are also using this for NCEA you may photocopy relevent sections of your planning. In this case, the portfolio will be judged in conjunction with your completed design. There will be a prize for the best use of recycling so please keep this in mind, look at op shops, the art recycling centre in Square Edge, Trade Me. Try and reuse products rather than buying new. You do not need to spend a lot of money to make an amazing costume. Think outside the box! Are you a member of Facebook? 5 Pop Art Design: Your design must be in the style of pop art: Pop Art is a modern art movement, started in the 1950s, which uses the imagery, styles, and themes of advertising, mass media, and popular culture. Richard Hamilton, Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol are among the best known Pop artists. Materials: Free use of materials. Construction: Any form of construction is permitted. Portfolio: A compulsory 3 page document must be presented at the photo shoot covering: 1 page research, 1 page ideas, 1 page development, this will be given to the judges. Think Pink THIS COSTUME MUST BE WORN BY A MALE MODEL Design: Free style design. Materials: Free use of materials, but only shades of pink must be visible Construction: Any form of construction is permitted. Portfolio: A compulsory 3 page document must be presented at the photo shoot covering: 1 page research, 1 page ideas, 1 page development, this will be given to the judges. Museum Design: Free style must be inspired by the Coach House Museum. Anything from leather to machinery. You will be given free access to the Coach House and are able to take photos. These will need to be used in your portfolio to show your inspiration. Your costume will be displayed at the Museum after the show. Materials: Free use of materials Construction: Any form of construction is permitted. Portfolio: A compulsory 3 page document must be presented at the photo shoot covering: 1 page research, 1 page ideas, 1 page development, this will be given to the judges. Enid Blyton Design: Free style design but must be inspired by the books of Enid Blyton. You may not be Noddy, Big Ears, Gollywog or Mr Plod. Do not make a costume; it needs to be wearable art piece that is inspired by any of her works. She wrote an estimated 800 books. Materials: Free use of materials. Construction: Any form of construction is permitted. Portfolio: A compulsory 3 page document must be presented at the photo shoot covering: 1 page research, 1 page ideas, 1 page development, this will be given to the judges. Your written work must show the inspiration and connection to her books, a scene or characters.
