3 Seventh Grade News January Welcome back! Social Studies Students are completing a brief review of Islam and West Africa. Students will look at how the gold/salt trade and the spread of Islam helped the growth of the West African empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai. Students will then move on to learning about the Ottoman, Mongol, and Mughal empires. Language Arts - Ms. Pollner s classes are studying Greek mythology -- discussing the reasons myths were told and identifying the common elements in myths. Students are also discovering the many expressions, symbols, etc. used today that began in myths. Research project will begin at the end of January. Students will research a well-known person who has left a legacy and present their information in a formal paper; they will then interview someone in the community who has left a legacy and present this information in an oral/ visual format. Math Math classes are really getting into Geometry now! Over the next month math classes will be learning all about the 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd dimensions. Students will have to memorize a plethora of formulas that they will be receiving in class. Students will also be using their knowledge of equations to help them solve the formulas. Students have also been learning about the cross sections of shapes -- a lot of visualizing in third quarter. They are either going to love it or hate it! Mrs. Kilgore s classes will also be in a competition against each other for highest homework average! The winning class will receive a ridiculous amount of food and goodies at their party! So make sure assignments are really done well this coming quarter! Miscellaneous Please continue to check Progress Book regularly and contact us with any concerns. Thank you for your continued support. 3
