6 LIVE OAKS SCHOOL 575 Merwin Avenue Milford, CT Dearest Colleagues and Families, Today there is, and perhaps there always will be, conflict in the world. But fortunately, the United States enjoys peace and freedom. Like other things of great value, this security does not come cheaply. Part of the cost has been paid by Americans who answered the call to military duty when their country needed them. They have served in nearly a dozen wars, from the American Revolution to the conflict in Afghanistan, earning the special distinction "veteran." Another part of freedom s cost must continue to be paid long after the guns have been silenced. This debt is owed to America's veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Let us continue to help those veterans and their families with the greatest possible compassion. At the very least, we can best pay tribute this day by recognizing what they have achieved and joining them in their resolve to keep America strong and free. On the 11 th of November, we pay tribute to perhaps the greatest Americans. We recognize this day with patriotic spirit and reverence. We honor veterans. Our intent is to ensure that all Milford students understand, appreciate and celebrate the holiday alongside those most deserving. Our underlying goal is to remember, respect and honor those who have and continue to proudly serve our country, ensure our freedoms and preserve our liberties. Thank you in advance, Celine Sandor Celine Sandor Teacher, Grade 5 Live Oaks School
7 Live Oaks School Honors our Veterans Veterans Day is a very important occasion at Live Oaks School. We would like to honor representatives from the various military branches of the armed services by inviting them to join our students and staff at an assembly honoring all of the veterans who have protected our freedom over the decades. An assembly will be held on Friday, November 11 th beginning at 9 a.m. recognizing and honoring these brave men and women. If you or your family knows of a veteran or veterans willing to attend, please share this invitation with him or her. The veterans will also have the opportunity to speak personally with the students in one or more of our classrooms. The Live Oaks School community will be honored to provide a special breakfast for each veteran who attends in gratitude for their military service. Please print the following information clearly Name of Veteran: Phone: Branch of Service: Number of years served: Name of child/grandchild/friend: Grade/Teacher: If the veteran would care to share any appropriate stories or memorabilia with children, please use the lines below to explain or describe. I would be happy to attend the assembly on November 11 th at 9 a.m. I would be happy to attend the breakfast at 8:00 a.m. I would be happy to briefly talk and/or share memorabilia between 9:45-10:15 a.m. Please return this completed form to Miss Sandor, Room 20 by Monday, November 7th.
8 Dear Live Oaks Families, In celebration of Veterans Day, we will be honoring those people in our lives who may have served or are actively serving as members of the armed forces. This is an excellent opportunity to have a conversation with your child about any family members, friends, or neighbors who have served in the U.S. military. Please assist your child in choosing a veteran to honor and help your child to write a brief summary of that veteran s service to share here at school. We will be creating a Wall of Honor at Live Oaks School in time for our school-wide Veterans Day celebration on Friday, November 11 th. Please send stars to school for collection to room 20. See below for a sample service summary. We understand that such detail may not be available to everyone. Do your best and be sure to draw or paste a picture of the veteran being honored inside the star. Here is a sample: Jordan Christopher Pierson Corporal, United States Marine Corps Milford s own - We remember Twenty-one year old Jordan Pierson was a Marine Corporal. He graduated from Foran High School in 2003 and put off attending the University of CT so he could serve his country. He lost his life during an attack in Iraq near the city of Fallujah while on patrol. He was a leader and earned a Purple Heart after he and another serviceman were hit with shrapnel. We honor his memory. Honored by: Ana Calder. In the tradition of the Blue Star Banner, the centered star should be colored blue, leaving a white background for your child s writing. Inside the blue star you can place a picture or illustration of the veteran being honored. Thank you for making this an excellent opportunity to honor our veterans in a meaningful learning experience for the children of Live Oaks School! Thank you! Celine Sandor Live Oaks Staff
