2 Dear Parents and Families: Did you know? Reading just 20 minutes a day exposes your child to about 1.8 million words per year. Reading helps students develop a stronger vocabulary, and in addition, students who read for pleasure average higher grades in English, mathematics, science, and history! Encourage your child to read books for fun by attending our upcoming Scholastic Book Fair. Allow your child to choose the books they want to read! It s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Mark your calendar! Book Fair dates: November Shopping hours: Class visits for primary campus will be split between Friday, November 16 (classes K Room 10, Grade 1 Rooms 9 and 17, Grade 3 Room 19, Grade 4 Room 22) and Monday, November 20 (classes K Room 7, Grade 2 Rooms 14 and 16, Grade 3 Room 15, and Grade 4 Rooms 20 and 21). Middle school class visits will all be on Monday, November 20. The fair is open to parents on Sunday, November 18 from 11-1 at the primary campus and on Tuesday through conferences. Type in events@stgertrudechicago.org and chose how you would like to help. Northside North Pole Parade: Letter from Angel Hair Ministry: Greetings of peace to you! I hope this invitation arrives at a convenient time. First, here is a brief history. Several years ago, a friend of mine was inspired by his experience in Latin America where he volunteered with a group that provided free haircuts to the poor and homeless. At that time, I was the pastor of St. Thomas of Canterbury in Uptown and he approached me with the idea of bringing a similar ministry here to Chicago. That was the humble beginnings of Angel Hair Ministry which we have been putting together for the last four years. The idea was not only to provide free basic haircuts during the holiday season for men, women, and
19 children who are unable to afford the luxury but it was also an event in which we would provide hospitality and a warm place to hang out for a good part of the day with breakfast, a hot lunch consisting of angel hair pasta (thus the name of the ministry), a doggy bag, gently used clothing and personal sized toiletries to which guests can help themselves. Everyone is a volunteer, and barber/stylists need not be professionals. For the guests, it was an opportunity to come in from the cold weather and experience something that some might take for granted that is, the luxury of a haircut and the chance to be pampered. For the volunteers, it was an opportunity to interact on a very personal level with those struggling financially on whatever level and see that they are ordinary people. This year, my friend and I are planning to bring the ministry here to the Rogers Park area of Chicago on Saturday, December 1st, In my time at St. Margaret Mary, I have noticed that the need for Angel Hair Ministry is just as important here in Rogers Park as in any other part of the city. We are planning to provide the same services as we did in previous years. To this effect, I would like to ask you to share these flyers with anyone in your congregation base that either might benefit from the event or would like to volunteer/donate. You can use the attached flyer for reference. For more information, you can instruct people to contact me at or through at tvillaverde@archchicago.org. Thank you! Sincerely, Fr. Tirso S. Villaverde, Jr.
