Roosevelt High School s monthly newsletter February 2016 Volume 16 Issue 5 ROOSEVELT ART STUDENTS EARN HONORS Roosevelt High School s art students had a phenomenal showing at this year s Scholastic Art Awards. Taking the top Gold Key honors were Brooke Hilton, Alex Walter and Hailey Hughes (2 awards). Hailey also had her overall portfolio receive Silver Key honors. Everett Elder and Rylee Simpson (2 awards) also took silver. Honorable Mentions went to Cheyenne Bohr and Alex Ramirez. The drawings by the Gold Key winners will go on to the national competition in April. Their work will be on display at the History Colorado Center in Denver from February 12-March 18. The Awards ceremony will be held on March 5. This Gold Key award-winning painting by RHS senior Hailey Hughes is just one of several honors that RHS art students received at this year s Scholastic Art Awards.
Parents, Have no fear, the A-TEAM is here! Remember A-TEAM tutors are available to help support your student every day after school from 2:45 to 3:45 in the RHS library. The A- TEAM is dedicated and willing to help by providing academic support as well as helping with organization, study skills and time management! Have your student take advantage! Snacks and Rowdy Points are also provided in an effort to increase attendance and support success in academics! We also offer Saturday school once a month from 9 AM to Noon in the RHS library where your student can enjoy 3 hours of quiet work time to complete classroom work with support from the A-TEAM. Saturday School dates for the remainder of the school year are: Saturday February 6 th Saturday March 12 th Saturday April 9 th Saturday May 7 th ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Parents of RHS GT Students, The second semester GT Seminar Project was offered at a late start meeting on Wednesday January 17 th. It is still available for students to sign up in the event that they were unable to attend the meeting. They simply need to see Mrs. Valencia for details on the project and sign up if they want to complete it. This semester the students will be studying the history, ecology, recreation and scientific value of the geological features specific to the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. The project completion deadline is Friday April 8 th and the field trip to the Garden of the Gods will take place on Saturday May 14 th. Please have your student see Mrs. Valencia soon if they are interested!
PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES SCHEDULED Parent Teacher Conferences will take place Wednesday, February 17 th from 3:00 till 7:00 pm at RHS. This is a great opportunity to meet with your student s teachers and get the semester off to a good start. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SPRING SPORTS REGISTRATION BEGINNING Spring Sports Registration will open on February 8th at for all students interested in going out for a Spring sport (Track & Field, Baseball, Girls Soccer and Girls Golf). This school year we have implemented a new Roosevelt High School Athletics website through SportNgin and all sports registration will now be submitted online. Please go to and click on the "Athletic Registration" heading. You will see a link to begin the registration process. Once you are at the Welcome page the parent/guardian will need to create an account if you don t have one by clicking on the "Signup" button at the bottom of the page. Registrations MUST be submitted using the parent/guardian login and not a student s. Payment for each sport will be requested at the end of the registration process so have your credit card information ready. The online registration will require electronic signatures (checkboxes) for both the parent as well as the student, so both parent and student should read through each section and click on the signature box as required. Note that we still require a physical copy of your student's physical form so please have your student bring a copy to the front office if they have not submitted one yet. Spring Sport practices will officially begin on February 29 th so all registrations must be submitted before that date in order for your student athlete to attend the first practice. Athletes still participating in a Winter sport should register once that sport is over. If you have questions regarding the registration process you can contact RHS Athletics secretary Ezzie Bejarano at

Come and see the Winter Musical Luann Presented by the RHS Theater Club! LUANN speaks to the heart and funny bone of everyone who is, ever was, or will be, an adolescent. All of Luann s fun-loving buddies are on board. There s best friend Bernice, whose lack of musical talent does not prevent her from playing in the school band; wise-cracking Delta; everannoying big brother Brad; Gunther the nerd and heart-throb Aaron Hill. And the beleaguered faculty is represented; among them, school counselor Miss Phelps, dispensing her incomprehensible advice when she s not chasing after English teacher and aspiring novelist, Mr. Fogarty. LUANN is convinced her horoscope means that Aaron is going to ask her to the school dance. The problem is, he doesn t even know she exists! In order to get Aaron to notice her, Luann tries out for cheerleader... but she becomes the team s mascot instead, with surprising results. In the complicated, hilarious process, Luann learns the value of being herself. Tickets are $5.00 and may be purchased at the door or from a cast member. Come on out and enjoy and great show! Dates and show times: February 18 th - 7:00 pm February 19 th - 7:00 pm February 20 th - 1:00 pm

Weld Re5J RHS COUNSELING February 2016 Motivating students to apply for scholarships Dear Parents/Guardians, Spring semester of a student s senior year is full of many mixed emotions and it can be difficult to keep students motivated, not only to attend their classes and fend off senioritis, but to continue to look for and apply for scholarships. Below are suggestions that may make the process easier. Have an honest discussion about how much college truly costs and help them develop a budget. Sometimes seeing the cost in writing helps students make realistic choices about money and the importance of applying for scholarships to help with the cost. Looking for scholarships can seem overwhelming. Organization is a truly important. Make sure they have reviewed deadlines and eligibility criteria that the scholarship is requesting. Help them develop a scholarship organization plan that works for them. This might include; their resume, transcripts, letters of recommendations, essays, etc., it will make the process much easier for them. Sometimes teenagers need incentives to get the scholarships done. Find out what would motivate them to get those applications finished and consider make a deal with them. Perhaps they can take a break from chores if they get a scholarship application done. Help them establish realistic their schedule. Is it reasonable to apply for two a week? If it is an attainable goal, they are more likely to compete it, without you having to nag them all the time! Recognize and acknowledge when they do get their applications done and turned in. Let them know that you see how hard they are working on helping pay for their school, it might encourage them to work on more! - Upcoming Events: February 5th:College/Career Fair February 6th: ACT Practice with Tutor Doctor February 6th: Saturday School February 17th: P/T Conferences February 25th: ASVAB test at RHS- National ACT: April 9th Deadline to register March 4th Great tips to make 2016 the best year Listen before you speak-seek to understand first. We have two ears and only one mouth. There's a reason for that. Celebrate progress--the journey to your goal could be a long one. Make sure you take the time to celebrate along the way. Success is worth celebrating. Figure out your why--why does it all matter? This will fuel for your motivation and take your work to the next level. Don't burn bridges-- You've got better things to focus on. Like being the most epic version of yourself that you can be. Every person you meet is a potential door opener to a new opportunity--be nice to people. You never know how you can help one another down the road. Share these and many more with your student at: amazing-mini-habits-that-willmake-2016-awesome.html
