New Country Vol. 1 #4 By Claudia Perez Foreign exchange students everywhere go through so many changes with getting adjusted to a new home, making new friends, starting at a new school, and learning a different culture. The foreign exchange students here at AHS are no exception. Adjusting to a new school is difficult. I really like the school, I am adjusting pretty good, said Junior exchange student Ali Tahir. I am very comfortable here at the school, I am making a lot of friends, and having a great time. Adjusting to a new school in a different country is harder than going to school in a different town, with a different school system and rules. I can t say that there is one big difference. The basics are the same, but the school is very different. In Germany, we don t have sports, homecoming,prom, yearbook etc, said junior exchange student Silvie Bermann. Also, being thousands of miles away from home is scary. Even with some difficulties, they still have high hopes to learn some news things while they are here. I would really love to experience American holidays like Halloween,Christmas,Thanksgiving. I also want to see snow; I have never seen snow in my life, responded Tahir. Chiara Bonfanti also said, First of all, I hope to speak English fluently; that s why I am here. I hope to make new friends and to live this experience in the best way possible, because this is a big opportunity for my future. Both boys and girls are working hard to go undefeated this season. Our goals are to return to the State Championship and go undefeated in the regular season said senior Aliyah White. Being a team is vital to getting anywhere, and both teams are coming together and forming bonds to strengthen the players as a whole. Hard work will pull the team together so they can go far. Senior Lucius Saldana agrees. I think we will go far. We just need to hook it up and play together as a team. And play smarter, Saldana said. Full support from all involved will build the confidence of the teams. Players, coaching staff, faculty, and fans will have to be united to achieve a strong confidence among the team. I believe the fans will be a big factor in how we have confidence in ourselves. I think they will be big supporters and understand everything we have put into it, said sophomore Skylee Glass. The Warrior basketball teams have the potential to make it far and reach their goals as long as there is unity and confidence among everybody. The Warriors and Lady Warriors kicked off their official season Tues. night against Elgin. The final score of the girls varsity game was 37-39, giving Elgin the win by two points. The boys won by three points with a score of They host the OKC Knights Tues. evening, JV at 4:30 p.m. and varsity at 6 p.m. Page 2

"I joined color guard because my friend talked me into it and it's turned out to be very fun," Samantha Wells said.

3 Behind the Flags By Kenzie Richardson The purpose of color guard is to interpret the music the band is playing through synchronized flag twirling and dancing. Color guard competes along with the band, and they've competed at the State Fair parade and at SWOSU s homecoming parade. They've also performed at Konawa Band Day and placed fourth. "I joined color guard because my friend talked me into it and it's turned out to be very fun," Samantha Wells said. Color guard may look easy, but it can be difficult at times if you don t know what you re doing. "The easiest part would have to be memorizing our routines and the hardest part would have to be performing in front of a lot of people," says Ashton Burkhead. They have many different routines but their favorite routines are to the songs I ll Be There and the color guard chant on the field. Color guard helps the band in many ways by adding a lot of additional visuals to the halftime show at football games and by using different colors and styles of flags to help enhance the visual effect. They add a wonderful aspect to any performance, and watching them perform alone is a treat. By Shandice Pendarvis In case you haven t heard the news, there are new businesses coming to Anadarko's Petree Plaza. When it s all said and done, Anadarko will have a Hibbett Sports, Factory Connection, and Dollar tree. Hibbett s will be my favorite because I don t have to go out of town to buy some of the stuff I like, said freshman Drukkari Goombi. This is something new and exciting for our small town. The city is trying to get these stores is as soon as possible, so people can start shopping there. These stores are likely to do well because people are familiar with these stores. Hiibbett s is a sports store, which will appeal to our Anadarko athletes. Hibbets was the first to open, but the other stores will be opening soon. The stores will be useful for this town because more people will come to buy stuff from small towns around us, said Tearza Leemhuis, sophomore. Factory Connection is a store where you can get name brand stuff at discounted prices. Dollar Tree is a place where senior Natalie Parton gets her school supplies and holiday decorations. It s is a store where literally everything is a dollar and students shop there because of that. Not just students, but teachers are ready for these stores to come. said Parton. Brandi Pitman, senior, is one student who took advantage of the employment opportunity. She thinks these stores will provide a lot for Anadarko. There s a lot of sports driven stuff and a lot of our sports usually go to state and everyone I talked to about it is excited for it, Pitman said. By Claudia Perez Academic team competed on Sat., Nov. 14, and brought home the title of Regional Champions. Previously this year, the team suffered a loss against undefeated Elgin. Seeking revenge at regional's, the academic team blew the competition out of the water. I think our kids did awesome at regional's and beat three very tough teams to win the championship. The most notable win came against Elgin,who has kind of become our regional rival. We won that game by only one question thanks to some game time strategy used by our players. It was very exciting, and Mr. Sims and I are super proud of all the studying and hard work these kids have put in. It's nice to see it paying off, said Sandi Zinn, who is an academic team coach along with Mr. Sims. Our first goal in this rebuilding year was to beat Elgin. Now, I expect for them to work hard for the next two months so that we can beat the undefeated Blanchard team at area and take home the area championship. Our final goal will be to win the state championship in Class 4A, said Mr. Sims. Page 3

Holidays By Clarisse Fraley Giving is one of the most selfless and kind things someone could do. During the holidays, many of us tend to get caught up in receiving, rather than giving.

4 Holidays By Clarisse Fraley Giving is one of the most selfless and kind things someone could do. During the holidays, many of us tend to get caught up in receiving, rather than giving. There are so many reasons to instead focus on giving. For example, it could help someone in need, or simply just make someone s day. I think people should be more involved with giving. You just get an indescribable feeling of happiness that only comes when you give, says Mayme Salinas, sophomore, when asked if people should worry more about giving or receiving. During the holidays, there are so many opportunities to give. Recently, severa; students volunteered at the Children s Christmas Store. The Children s Christmas Store is a place where kids can purchase gifts for their family members that don t have a lot to spend. You can donate to the store, and with the help of 4-H and FFA students, children will choose and wrap four gifts each. The Children s Christmas Store can help bring joy to families by giving gifts (during the holidays), said Mr. Edmond, who helped to sponsor the Children s Christmas Store. Another way of giving is giving food to a food drive. In November, Key Club partnered with the Kiwanis Club and took food donations from all around town. They sorted all the donations out and took it to DHS, who then distributed the food to families in need. The food collected was given to 38 families. Mrs. Crowell, Key Club sponsor, said, People who need food, can then get it. (Helping with that) lets people see how fortunate they are to have enough food. Giving, donating, and volunteering are great ways to help and spread kindness. Volunteering at animal shelters and nursing homes, and donating money, food, and clothes to charity, or homeless people are some ways to give, said sophomore, Mykala Loftis. If you are unsure of how to start giving, start small, and see where it goes from there. There are lots of ways to give, or to give more than what you ve already done. When giving, it shows people that you care, and want them to be happy. Giving to a certain person can brighten their day, and even help you become a better person. AHS Holiday ACtivities The Anadarko student council has put together a Christmas themed dress up week in the spirit of the season. The themes include: Scarfs and gloves - Wear your best winter accessories. Flannel- Come in your best flannel outfit! Christmas Sweaters: - Ugly & cute- we like them all! Christmas Costumes - Dress as Santa, an elf, a reindeer, or even a snowman! Pajamas & blankets -Be warm and cozy; dress how you want! With goodies coming from multiple clubs and decorations abroad, one can see that AHS has Christmas spirit. Happy Holidays to all and to all a good break! Page 4
