1 Amber Sater, Principal Tom Cullen, Assistant Principal and Athletic Director December 2014 HOMELINE WINTER BREAK The last day of classes will be December 19. Winter Break will be Dec. 22 Jan 2. Classes will resume on January 5. ATHLETIC EVENTS If school is canceled due to weather, there will be no middle school practices or games. 1st Semester Report Cards will go home January 9, The EWMS Kids Club would like to thank everyone for donating to our annual holiday food drive. We were able to collect over 1,200 items. As a result of your generosity, we were able to provide many families with food for Thanksgiving dinner. We appreciate all of you! The EWMS drama club is sponsoring the Middle School Talent Show on December 2, at 7:00 pm in the PAC. Admission is donation at the door to help us with our spring show. The Kids Club would also like to ask for your help with our Christmas angel tree. We will be collecting stocking stuffers, such as small games, puzzles, socks, hair accessories, gloves, etc. Any help you can give is deeply appreciated. Once again, thanks so much for all you do. We would like to wish our EWMS Starz Dance Team Good Luck as they travel to Mitchell High School for their first competition on December 6 th. The team will compete in the Pom and Jazz division. The team consists of two 6 th graders, three 7 th graders and ten 8 th graders. Competition results can be found in next month s edition! The EWMS Winter Choir Concert and Band Concert will be Tuesday, December 16, at 7:00 p.m., in the Performing Arts Center. Admission is FREE!
2 EWMS students will compete in the National Geographic Geography Bee on December 2 nd. The top ten will then compete in a final competition the following week. The winner of the Bee will take a test to qualify for the state level Bee. The 5 th and 6 th grade boys basketball teams need volunteers to work the clock and keep the scorebook for the home basketball games. Please contact the Middle School coaches if you are interested. Thanks for your help. CONGRATULATIONS SPELL BOWL TEAM! The Indiana Spell Bowl Junior Division is a competition sponsored by The Indiana Association of School Principals and Purdue University. It is designed to encourage academic excellence in spelling. School teams are composed of eight members (eight rounds) plus as many as eight alternates from grades 6-8 (at our school). Each student spells nine words from an earlier published list. Ribbons are awarded at Regionals for first, second, and third place according to class (based on student enrollment). All the scores are sent to the state office, and the office selects a particular percentage of the top scorers to compete at the state level. Our EWMS Spell Bowl Team won SECOND PLACE RED RIBBONS in their class and placed second overall, out of 7 schools at the Bedford Regionals on November 4, After the scores were sent to state, our team was not selected to go to the state competition this year. However, we did place nineteenth out of forty-nine schools in Class 3 across the state of Indiana, which is an important accomplishment. Top spellers were Talon Felker (seven correct words), Kaleb Hopper (five correct words), Delaney Wills, Katelyn Schlesener and Caleb McClellan (all with four correct words). Other team members included Abby Foster, Justin Hufnal, Tyler Martin, Delaina Crowhorn, Jordan Williams, Samantha Schlesener and Allison Wall. A special thanks to Mrs. Debra Humphrey for proctoring. Also, thank you to the parents who cheered us on at the Regionals. Thank you to Mr. Hoke, Aaron Smith, Greg Hopkins, and Amber Sater for all their SUPPORT! GREAT JOB TEAM!

4 School Messenger Alerts Parents may have up to three (3) alert numbers in Harmony for notifications through the school messaging system. Please note that any and all alert numbers you identify to the school will be used for messages about school activities or changes to the daily schedule. Having the same alert number under an elementary student account and, say, for example, a sibling account in the middle school will NOT result in two messages to the same number. With the approach of winter weather and potential school delays and cancelations, please let the office know alert numbers you wish used for school messages. One feature of School Messenger is the ability to send text message alerts. In order to participate in the text message service, you must indicate your willingness to receive text messages to your phone. The process is simple and will only take a few moments to complete. Follow the steps below: 1. Text "SUBSCRIBE" to the number If at any time you wish to stop receiving text alerts, text "UNSUBSCRIBE" to If you subscribed successfully you will receive the following message: "You are registered to receive aprox 3 msgs/mo.text STOP to quit, HELP for help." 3. You will need to repeat this opt-in process for any wireless numbers that you wish to include. Please note, although the corporation does not charge for this service, it does not pay for text message charges that may be incurred by you for sending or receiving text alerts. Check with your wireless carrier for possible charges. Please report all changes in telephone numbers or contact information to the office when a change occurs. This will keep you current with information from your child s school.
5 East Washington School Corporation All for one and one for all 1050 North Eastern School Road Pekin, IN Phone Fax Dear Families, I want to start by thanking each of you for working so well with us on getting negative lunch balances down to an all-time low!!! We also appreciate your working with us as we ve made our transition to the Harmony Lunch Program. Beginning on January 5, 2015, we will no longer be giving change at registers in the cafeterias. When students go through the lunch line and require change, it becomes quite an issue for those running the registers. Our new system is not as user friendly as our previous system and it s very easy to make mistakes when giving change. The great thing about this is any money your child gives to the cashier will be credited to your child s account. For example, if your child has a -$5.00 on his/her account and gives the cashier a $20 bill, it will take away the negative and leave remaining funds at a positive standing on the account. The system is technically designed to operate without giving change, but we have been working around it while adjusting to the new program. We do realize this will be a change, but it will help reduce negative balances and make the lunch line move much faster. It will also lessen the chances for mistakes being made on your child s account. Students will be able to give larger bills, but they need to understand that they will not get change in return. Students can also pay cash for his/her meal, but must understand no change will be given. The extra change from the remaining money will be applied to the student s account. We appreciate your understanding on this as we move into next year. We want to make sure your child s account is as accurate as possible and giving change at the registers really slows things down and raises that chance for mistakes. Please make sure you make arrangements ahead of time for your child s after school needs where change is concerned. If you have any questions, please let me know. Thank you, Greg Hopkins Assistant to the Superintendent
