1 The Voice of Sacred Heart Students SHS Times May 24, 2010 What is in this article? Field Day is here! Do you have your clothes for spirit week ready? Red won last year, who will win this year!? Field Day Volume 1, Issue 4 Inside this issue: Escrip Harry Potter series Book Review Coloring Page Quote of the month Comic Snap Shot Playmakers Music Man Mother s day tea People to People Camp Hamilton A note from the Editor By: Joey Capestany The new classified section will be a section that you can suggest items that you have that you would like to sell like: watches, clothes, or electronics you will have to say what's your price that you want for it. You can sell it from 10 cents to 10 dollars and you would have to say what condition it is in and your name and that would be the classified section. By: Tess Bridges Yes, Sacred Heart, it's here! The annual SHS field day has finally arrived. This splendid event is a morale booster for big and little kids alike. Field day is the time when we come together as a school to work as one team, hand in hand. The excitement electrifies the air and can be felt all over the school. One sixth grader is quoted saying, "Field Day is my favorite time of the year. It is so fun!" Each team has a different color including blue, green, yellow, white, red, and orange. All grades have a different role in contributing to the welfare of the team. For example, the eight graders are the leaders of their families, or teams, and are responsible for leading the cheering, helping out the youngsters, and many other tasks. The different teams compete against each other team to win, and the color with the most triumphs win. However, cheering is also a huge part of the competition because spirit points are also given to the most supportive team. Cheering for the other team is also emphasized. Each family has a mascot/name. The members of each family dress up in their team color. Accessories are also worn on field day. Make sure they are comfortable clothes because the competition is fierce and fun! Activities include obstacle course, soccer, softball, kickball, volleyball, and many more. Field Day really emphasizes including everyone, leadership, and spirit! It is a long awaited time of the year and gives many people something really exciting to look forward to. Get ready for this active and joyous day, and don't forget to cheer for your family! Picture taken by: Molly Foley F-63 F 50 F-65 F 49 F-63 F 49 F-61 F 47 F-61 F

2 VOLUME 1 ISSUE 4 SHS TIMES PAGE 2 escrip By: By Hank Przelenski Did you know that escrip, Sacred Heart and Safeway together raise money for our school? So every dollar your family spends at Safeway earns money for our school. You can even ask other people to shop at Safeway and start earning money for Sacred Heart. Hank Przelenski and Jake Porter took a thank-you gift to Safeway and delivered it to the manager. She said, We have lots of families from Sacred Heart that shop here! There are many ways to earn money for our school, including bake sales, magazine and wrapping paper sales, SCRIP and the school auction. So make sure your family is registered with escrip it helps our school! Picture taken by: M.V. Foley Sacred Heart students, Hank Przelenski and Jake Porter, with Safeway assistant manager Ruth. Harry Potter Series Book Review By: Megan Faricy Picture of Harry Potter Series One of the most popular book series of all time is Harry Potter. Harry Potter is a series written by J. K. Rowling, a highly admired author for her fantastic detail and inspiring ideas. J. K. Rowling has a creative imagination that helped her write these seven books, and because of that, all over the school you ll see people lost in their books, reading about Harry Potter and his adventures at Hogwarts. So what exactly makes this series so popular? With J. K. Rowling s amazing descriptive-eye and storyline it s almost easy to pretend that you re with Harry wherever he goes. As he faces dangers beyond imagination, and balances it off with school, and magic, you ll be there alongside him. I would definitely suggest checking this series out. At the library, borrow it from a friend, or buy it as your own. You will have a great time reading it and love the plot and suspense of each and every book! 5 VOLUME 1, ISSUE 4 SHS STUDENT NEWSPAPER PAGE 5 Playmakers Joey Capestany The newspaper thought it would be good if the students should help decide the next playmakers play. We will have a paper that will come on Thursday to suggest names. These shows have to have no bad names and they can t be very long. Your votes will help pick the new show so make it great. The director will pick what is new play. Music Money By: Kate Simmons I was in the play, The Music Man, and I loved it. I thought the best part was singing 76 Trombones and dancing with the cast. I thought everybody in the play were both good actors and good singers. The Mayor of River City was the funniest because of the costume and the mustache. My favorite actor, besides me, was well everybody!!!!

6 VOLUME 1, ISUE 4 Mother s Day Tea By Megan McReynolds SHS TIMES PAGE 6 On Tuesday, May 4 th, kindergarten students had a tea for their mommies. We made hats with our buddies and we gave the hats to the moms. When we gave it to the moms, we had to go and sing a song and then there was a break for food. When the break was over, we read our books. Mine was called Princesses by Megan McReynolds. Other kids books were called Star Wars, Seaside, Sunsets and Unicorns, and Friends. Kids wrote about Legos and electric toys. Jack, Emily, and Isabella with their moms. Picture taken by Mrs. DeGioia Daniel s book said that the principal was the best. It was FUN because we got to sit with our moms and I got to eat my orange lollipop. I m glad we got to read to our mommies. People to People By Chris Martin Camp Hamilton By Valerie Garcini On the 18 th of April, 5 students from the 6 th grade took a trip to Washington D.C. They had been nominated to go there the year before, and had anxiously awaited the coming of that day. The students were Mitchell Lee, Megan Faricy, Greta Tobin, Alexis Losse, and Chris Martin. While they were there they were taken through and around our nation s capital learning about our history; they took tours of memorials, a battlefield and even a farm! Along with the sightseeing, many of the 130 kids in People to From left to right Mitchell Lee, Chris Martin, Greta Tobin, Megan Faricy, and Alexis Losse. These are the students who were lucky enough to take a trip on the Washington DC with People to People. Picture taken by Mrs. Martin People made new friends that they would have for the rest of their lives. Everyone learned a lot and was very grateful for this amazing opportunity. From May 11 th to May 14 th the whole sixth grade took a field trip to Camp Hamilton. Everyone had so much fun. There were two other schools there too. They were St. Benedict and St. Joseph. Kids were split into cabins (by school), meal groups (at random), and exploration groups (at random). The days were spent hiking around camp, canoeing, rock climbing, and many other activities. Nights were spent either going on a night hike or sitting by a campfire while watching skits and singing songs. Sacred Heart Student Frances Hausmann said, My favorite part of Camp Hamilton was the campfire circle. It was really fun. Obviously the trip was a great success!
