1 The OWLET the full swoop Aborn Students Get Honored We would like to recognize two Aborn students who won awards this spring. In first grade, Callie Allaire, won an award from the Massachusetts School Building Authority for her writing on what would be her ideal school. Callie, her family, Ms. Sweeney and Ms. Muxie attended the ceremony at the State House where Callie won a gift bag, and a prize. Fifth grader, Gavin Kennedy, won the George Laubner Award for his essay on his future academic plans and how these plans will impact him and his family. Gavin and his family, along with Ms. Muxie, attended the award ceremony where Gavin received a Barnes and Nobles gift card. Congratulations to both Callie and Gavin on their awards. Everyone at Aborn is very proud of you! The students have worked very hard this year and now it is time for summer vacation! I know sometimes I get bored in the summer. Sometimes it feels like there is nothing to do. If you feel the same way, then this newspaper issue is for you! It is packed with ideas on how you can make your summer fun. Some other ideas (that I personally enjoy) are making your own pizza, going for a walk in the forest and looking for animals, and looking for shells on the beach. I hope you enjoy your summer and make some memories with your family! 2 Aborn 5th Grade Track and Field Day BY Olivia Shultz On May 29th, 2015 Aborn participated in the Track and Field events held at Manning Bowl. Aborn School attended on the 3rd day of this event. The events that we could choose from were 50m dash, 100m dash, 200m dash, long jump, softball toss, and the 100m x 4 relay race. For the 50m girls, Ava Ruma placed 5th in the city running the race in 8.7 seconds! For the 100m girls and boys race, Olivia Shultz came in 1st place with 16.2 seconds and Quinn McHale came in 2nd also with 16.2 seconds. Sammy Brown placed 4th with 17.3 seconds. In the 200m girls, Arianna Garcia got 1st place with 32.4 seconds and Amanda Tucker stole third place with 33.8 seconds. In the boys and girls long jump, Ava Ruma came in 2nd place by jumping 5ft. 8 in. Quinn McHale also came in second jumping 6ft. 6in. and Gavin Kennedy came in 3rd with 6ft. 3 in. Finally for the girls 100 x 4 relay, Amanda Tucker, Olivia Shultz, Ava Correnti, Arianna Garcia placed 3rd in the city. We are proud of all of our students who placed in this very competitive event. Aborn Staff vs. Students Basketball Game By Michael Gates On June 2, 2015 the Aborn School staff played the students in a very exciting basketball game. The staff won the game but the students put up a great fight. It looked like anyone s game at first, but the staff had a good lead at half-time and the students could not come back from the deficit despite a lot of good plays from Andre Young and Quinn McHale, both hitting three pointers. Sammy Brown played very aggressively and scored many baskets. All in all, the staff, students and crowd thoroughly enjoyed the game. Page 2 The OWLET the full swoop

3 Advice Column Question: School is almost ending and I have nothing to do in the summer. Do you have any suggestions? Dear Bored in Summer, I always get bored in summer so here are some things that I like to do. I hope you enjoy them too! Camp in the backyard and go stargazing Make a smoothie (with an adult s help) Build a blanket fort Go in the woods and explore nature with friends or family Also, on the last page of the newspaper there is a list of summertime events right here in Lynn! 4 Teacher Interviews By Khanyka Fialho and Emily Taveras Interview with Ms. Marren Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? A: In the summer, I scuba dive, work-out, run, travel, and take courses to learn new things and become a better teacher. Q: How long have you been teaching? A: I have been teaching for 10 years starting in Q: What are your favorite subjects? A: My favorite subjects are reading, science and as I get older I enjoy learning about US History. Q: What is your favorite food? A: My grandma s homemade chicken noodle soup. Q: Do you have any pets? A: No. Q: If you were on a deserted island, what are three things would you bring? A: I would bring my I-Pod, sunglasses and scuba mask. Interview with Mr. Kelley By Nick O Malley and Ayoub Sougrati Q: Why did you want to be a gym teacher? A: I liked sports and I had great coaches who inspired me. Q: What are your favorite sports? A: My favorite sports are baseball and football. Q: Do you like being a gym teacher? A: Yes. Q: What occupation would you have gone into if you weren't a gym teacher? A: I would be a firefighter. Q: What did you want to be when you were a little kid? A: I wanted to be a baseball player.

5 Creative Writing The Amazing Life of Reading by Emily Taveras Imagine a world where you are the creator; where you create lives, problems, solutions, characters; where you pick the type of story you want. You can pick Fantasy, Mystery, Comedy, Fiction, Drama, and many more. Also, if you get a little more creative you could make a movie based on your book. Just think of what you can do with the power of your imagination!!!! Book Review by Khanyka Fialho Her Evil Twin This book is about Anna s new friend Emma. She is everything Anna could ask for; fearless, fashionable, and always up for a new adventure! But, soon Emma s fun gets out of hand. She borrows spray paint from the art room and blames it on Anna, after all they look alike. Why would Emma do this? She is a normal girl after all. Or is she??? This book kept me on the edge of my seat! If you like a good mystery, you will love this book! I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

7 DIY Summer DIY Cake Batter Ice Cream DIY Homemade Bubbles 1 pint heavy cream* 1 c. milk* (I used 2%) 1/2 c. sugar* 1 c. dry yellow box cake mix* 2 t. vanilla extract pinch of tumeric* (optional, however, it doesn't add flavor but gives the ice cream it's deep cream color) Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until mixture is smooth. Chill mixture in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. 1 cup warm water 2 tablespoons liquid dish or laundry detergent 1 tablespoon glycerin 1 teaspoon white sugar How to make bubbles: Gently stir all ingredients together and store in a airtight container. These bubbles have staying power! Given the right conditions you might lose sight of your bubbles before they pop!
