LaSalle-Peru Township High School Band Syllabus We are very excited that your family has chosen to participate in one of the largest and most successful groups at LaSalle-Peru Township High School. The Marching Cavaliers and LPHS Band Program have a long tradition of excellence. Being a member will be a rewarding experience for both you and your student. This syllabus has been compiled to assist both the parent and the student. We hope it will answer any questions and also serve as a reference for dates, requirements, and other important aspects of the band program. If you or your student ever has any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the director. Have a great year! Marching Cavalier Staff Director Ms. Tuttle ptuttle@lphs.net Drill Writer Kevin Nevsimal Drumline Instructors Abby Shields and Tyler Teele Colorguard Instructors Deana Brown and Kelsey Conrad Find Information Regarding the LP Band Program This website will have all information regarding the Marching Cavaliers, Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble, AP Music Theory, and BPA Information, and is always being updated. Attendance Policy Attendance is mandatory at all band performances and rehearsals. Perfect attendance is considered the norm. Issues concerning attendance will be dealt with on an individual basis. We understand that students are busy with sports and other extra curricular activities and some rehearsals will be missed. In order for an absence to be considered excused, the student will need to communicate with the director at least two weeks prior to the missed rehearsal. The director will then inform the student if the absence is excused and what the make-up work will entail. Any emergency situations that require a student to miss a performance or rehearsal need to be communicated to the director as soon as possible by phone or . Unexcused absences for rehearsals and performances (football games, field show competitions, parades, basketball games, volleyball games and concerts) will result in their grade being lowered by one letter. Unexcused absences include: scheduled work, homework, lack or ride to rehearsal, forgot to set alarm clock, attending a professional sporting event, family vacation, and forgot/confused. These explanations will automatically be considered unexcused absences.

Make-up work will be available for students with unexcused absences. This make-up work will include music memorization tests, dot tests, music article reviews and more if necessary, all given at the directors discretion. Conflicts will arise between sports, extracurricular activities, work, and band. Students will be held responsible for balancing their own schedules. If there are conflicts with sports practices and band rehearsal then a 50/50 policy will take place. The student will need to communicate with the coach and band director and coordinate an even amount of time to be missed with both groups. This policy enables the student to participate in as many activities as possible while still being fair to the remaining students on their team/in band. Special attendance policy exceptions will be made on a case by case basis and at the discretion of the director. The grade for band or percussion ensemble will count towards their GPA and remain on their transcripts for all trade school and college applications. Tardy Policy During the regular school day students will abide by the LPHS hand book tardy policy. Cell Phone Policy Students will be allowed to carry cell phones in their pockets. Students must have their cell phone turned off (not on vibrate) while in rehearsal or in the building. If a student uses their cell phone in any way that is disruptive to the teaching and learning process, the student will be subject to discipline. Students caught using cell phones will abide by the LPHS student hand book discipline policies. Rules and Guidelines for LP Bands 1. Respect yourself and others at all times. 2. Represent the LP Band program with pride through your practice habits, actions and appearance. 3. No talking at any time while the director is on the podium or giving instruction. 4. Remember, you are representing the Marching Cavaliers, LaSalle-Peru High School and LaSalle-Peru, Illinois. Unprofessional behavior may result in dismissal from the band program. Fees, Instrument Maintenance and Supplies Students will be required to purchase the following items: - Lyre (prices differ depending on instrument) - Marching MTX Shoes - White Sure Grip gloves (minimum 4 pair) - Flip Folder - Flip Folder Pages (no more than 10) - Marching Cavaliers T-Shirt (to be worn under the uniform) - Colorguard uniform (only applies to color guard members) These items (excluding the Marching Cavaliers T-Shirt and color guard uniform) are all included in the Kidder music accessory order form. Percussion students will keep their sticks/mallets organized and in good playing condition. Only marching snare, tenor and concert snare sticks will need to be periodically replaced. With proper care, mallets should last throughout the high school career.

Woodwind and Brass students will be expected to keep their instrument in proper playing condition. Repairs will be made by The Music Shoppe (Bloomington, IL) and loner instruments will be provided while the student s instrument is under repair. Bills are usually sent to the home after the repair is completed. The LaSalle-Peru band program uses Kidder Music and The Music Shoppe for all of our music supplies. Parents and students are encouraged to purchase music supplies through the online stores. To order any music or instrument supplies on paper students may pick up an order form from the director and leave the completed order form with a check written to Kidder Music, or The Music Shoppe. These orders will be given to the representatives that comes to the high school weekly and the items will be delivered to the school in a week. Uniform The marching band and concert band uniform should be treated with respect at all times. Although the uniform is assigned, it remains property of the LP band program. Students are responsible for taking care of all parts of the uniform. Students will wear the uniform properly and in its entirety at all times. - If caught in the rain and the uniform becomes wet, individually hang each part of the uniform and let air dry. - While the uniform is not in use the hat must remain in the hat box. While wearing the hat, no hair should be visible. All long hair needs to be up. - Students will receive a plume prior to each performance. Students are not to handle the plume with their bare hands. - No fingernail polish while in uniform. - No jewelry is to be worn while in uniform. - Gloves must be clean and shoes must be polished at all times. - Always wear long black socks, no black ankle socks. Students will be held responsible for any damages to the uniform. The only alterations that are allowed are the pants being hemmed by a professional as well as the sleeves. Damages to the uniform also include cleanliness. If the uniform is returned with any damages, alterations, or is misplaced the student is responsible for a replacement uniform. The following is a list of each part of the uniform and its cost (as of 2013): - Coat $ Bib Trousers $ Gauntlets $ Garment Bag $ Cape $ Aussie hat $ Plume $18.00 Total $358.96

Instrument Rental Students will be expected to maintain their own instrument. If a particular instrument is not owned, LPHS will provide an instrument to rent free of charge. Students needing to check out an instrument will need to fill out an instrument rental form and return it to the director. *While renting the instrument, all repairs and damages will be the responsibility of the student. If the instrument is not returned in the condition in which it was issued, all repairs will be billed to the students account. If the instrument is not returned a replacement instrument will be charged in full to the student account. Field Show Competitions Within the week of a competition, an itinerary will be available on the band website. The itinerary will include a schedule, what to bring, and address of the performance site. Parents should plan on attending as many performances as possible. It is a great way to meet other parents and to get to know the students. Also, the students appreciate hearing their parents cheer as we march on and off the field! Parents can follow the caravan to the performances, ride the bus as a chaperone, or drive on their own. Parent Releases Picking up a student from a performance site Occasionally a student would like to leave with their parents immediately after a performance. This is fine, as long as the student informs the parent chaperone on their bus that they will not be riding the bus home. After the performance, the student and their parent must find Ms. Tuttle and inform them that you are leaving. A written note stating that the parent is taking their student from a specified location will also suffice. Students who leave with parents will be responsible for taking their uniform and instrument home with them. Since low brass, low woodwinds and percussion instruments go on the equipment truck, the student is responsible for finding another student who will take care of their instrument and uniform. Students will not be allowed to leave with any parent other than their own unless the director receives written permission from their parent or guardian stating that the student may leave with a different parent.

What every parent needs to know about the Marching Cavalier Fundraisers Throughout the school year the LP Bands have multiple fundraising opportunities to help with the costs of trips, instrument replacement, instrument repair, equipment and other band related needs. Such fundraisers include: concession stands, HyVee sales, poinsettia sales, candy sales, trivia night and many more. Parent Volunteer Opportunities The Marching Cavaliers, symphonic band, jazz band and basketball band provide great opportunities for both you and your child. A program like ours needs not only financial, but also physical support in order to succeed. Volunteer opportunities are described below. Chaperones Only parents and guardians of the Marching Cavaliers are allowed to chaperone. Chaperones are required on every bus for every trip that the band takes. A chaperone s responsibilities are to ride the bus and ensure that the students are acting appropriately. Chaperones will take attendance, collect and store valuables, and appoint students to check that the bus is clean and empty at the end of the trip. Uniforms Uniform parents help to issue and fit uniforms at the beginning of the season and help collect them after each performance. Uniform parents will help hem pants and jackets as needed and any other minor uniform repair. Uniform parents also ensure that the uniforms are hung properly after each performance. Pit Crew The pit crew helps move equipment at every performance. These parents also help assemble and move the drum major podiums. This crew is in charge of loading the equipment truck. This does require some heavy lifting and pushing, but it is necessary to get the marching Cavaliers on and off the field in time. Please consider being involved. There is always something that needs to be done. Your help is greatly appreciated. Do not wait to be asked, if you see something going on that looks interesting, offer to help. It is a great way to meet not only your student s friends but also their parents.
