12 Gauge Marathon Hunters Run Gun Club Hooray!!!! We had a superb shoot. The weatherman was fully cooperative, with blue skies, trivial wind, and delightful temperatures. 55 shooters were with us, with smiles seen all around. Four-Star Chef Carey outdid John Folse in the culinary department. We had four superb referees in Carla, Sara, Tom and Manny. Targets were great (Thanks, Gary). Registration went smoothly (Thanks, Jeanette and David). And the details were taken care of (Thanks, Chris). Dan Gibbons, Charles The Hammer Richardson & Ray Brandes The Mighty Mississippians were out in force, even bringing in a ringer from Alabama for reinforcement. Their assault on Louisiana resulted in Tom Wilz taking home the CDE Trophy. But they were repulsed by the Yankees from Monroe who took home the Championship Trophy as Charles "Hammer" Richardson ran a 198 to win it. Mississippian Guy Saenger won it last year -- Louisiana had a hard time staying ahead of the invading forces. Special Thanks to Scott McKnight for donating the Championship Trophy and shells, to Teresa and Cedric Vickers for donating the CDE Trophy, and to Jeanette and Chris Baudoin for the shells to the CDE winner. Thank you all for attending. We enjoyed hosting y'all. Article by: Ray Brandes Pictures by: David O Quinn Tom Wilz and Mike Vickers Page 2 RED CHUTE GAZETTE

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 4 Page 3 The Gertrude Hurlbutt Open was held on Saturday, April 11, 2009 at Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club. This year, we had 14 shooters vying for the honors, including two new shooters Matthew Melton and Peter B. Boggs, M.D. Yes, for this Spring time event, we did have our own staff Allergist! Gertrude Hurlbutt Open Red Chute Shotgun Sports Club The weather was great (well maybe a tiny bit windy) and we didn t even break a sweat. We did break some targets. Lloyd Webb teased our taste buds with a fabulous noon meal of grilled pork chops, green beans and macaroni salad. Debbie Frey s cherry dump cake was also a big hit. Walter Williams, III, Charles The Hammer Richardson & Bill Schodlatz We want to give special thanks to Lloyd Webb for cooking and to Paul Williamson, Gary Sullivan, James Kip Kiplinger, Greg Teeters and Sam Tidwell for a great job refereeing the events. 4 Keeping Up With Your Averages When I was in high school, I didn t really appreciate how much I would be using math when I grew up. If you are like me, keeping up with your skeet averages and posting your score card is probably the least fun part of the sport. Having worked with skeet registrations at our shoots I know some of you aren t that keen on it either. Ever since we went to the rolling average method of calculating our classifications, I have been using an Excel spreadsheet to keep mine straight. If you haven t tried it yet, you need to. If you are reading this Newsletter on a computer (highly likely since it is only dispersed via ), you probably have Excel on your computer. You can download a sweet Excel worksheet from a website linked to the NSSA website. This spreadsheet was designed by Mike Skidmore and is very easy to use and update. After you load in your scores the spreadsheet automatically (that s the best part) updates your averages. Simply print a hardcopy and put it in your shoot bag. The next time you shoot in a registered event, just hand that page to the registrar. It really simplifies the signup process, especially if there is an HOA or HAA competition. After the shoot, remember to input your new scores and print a new page for the next shoot. To get the spreadsheet go to: There are several versions. I use the standard version which is the first one on the list. Thank you Mike Skidmore for sharing this time saver with us! Don t Forget the I-20 Open Schedule Change Charles Richardson has asked me to remind everyone that the 2009 Skeet Schedule that went out from the LSSA has an error. The I-20 Open will be held one day only at the T. O. Toby Bancroft Memorial Gun Club in West Monroe. The shoot will be held on Saturday, May 16 th and will consist of 50 targets in each gauge (12, 20, 28 &.410) plus 50 Doubles. Sounds like fun! Pre-Registration Is Important Now is the time to pre-register for shoots scheduled in May. If you have a preference regarding flights, plan ahead. Wait too late and you may miss out on the fun. All the clubs sponsoring shoots want to make the events enjoyable for the contestants. Pre-registration helps us to be prepared and helps eliminate a lot of stress for you and shoot management. Wade Jones tells us that the 28 Gauge Marathon at Bayou Boeuf is almost full! If you don t pre-register for this shoot, you will miss the boat. Page 4 RED CHUTE GAZETTE

Dana Your paper keeps getting better and better. All of the LA shooters seem to be interested in getting their word out. I see that you beat me by one bird in the C class 12 ga. Not sure that will happen again :(!!!!!!!!!!! Better tighten up whatever your shooting!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks, Wundering Willie Doug & Debbie--another good job-i do not remember the shoot that wade wrote about-as I was spending a year in Southeast Asia. But I met some of the shooters in later years. I enjoyed the April issue---thanks John Ellis Hey Doug. Great job with the Gazette. For future reference, the HOA winner of the Red Chute Monthly Fun Shoot should have read, Moe Moreland, not "Morrison". Not a big deal, but thought you would want to know. Best regards, Bill Hogg [Publisher s note; Thanks Bill. We published what we were given. Congratulations Moe on a great score!] Debbie and I really appreciate all the kind comments and support!! Thanks! Doug & Debbie Frey

SKEET SHOOTING ETIQUETTE In most any activity in life there are standards for social etiquette. One might say that the standards that applied when we were growing up seem to often be overlooked today. How many times have you seen men wearing hats in a restaurant? I was taught that you removed your hat when you came indoors. If you go to the Louisiana Board Walk on Red River, you better not wear your hat backwards. The police will ask you to leave. I think that is great. It sets a tone for the environment. With the decline in attention to good manners, the way we get along with others in society becomes increasingly more difficult. These days you have to admit, some folks have become lax in the etiquette department. If participants and spectators at shooting events will follow some simple common sense rules of etiquette, we will all have a more enjoyable time. One of the issues that often arise is spectators conversing with shooters while they are in the middle of a competition. Another is spectators carrying on conversations near the competing shooters. Sometimes these conversations are very distracting to the shooters. Competitors know that the mental game is a huge factor in skeet. A big part of that is maintaining your concentration and focus on the task at hand. If spectators in the gallery are talking loud enough for the shooter to hear, or if a spectator asks a competitor a question, it can be very distracting and can cost the competitor a bird. I have seen it happen and you probably have too. If we are all respectful of other competitors in this regard, we all benefit. I found the following list of Skeet Etiquette guidelines on a website sponsored by the Markham Skeet, Trap and Sporting Clays Club in Sunrise Florida. I have reprinted it here with their permission. This subject is also discussed in detail in a book by King Heiple and Todd Nelson entitled Mastering Skeet. The following is a summary of an article was published by Adrian Cousens, this version is dated I don't think courtesy ever goes out of style, so take a look at this list of "rules" for honoring your friends. The full article is available - simply ask! 1. Skeet Shooting is a sport. Never lose sight of the fact that this is supposed to be fun, and that the organizers are volunteers, not paid employees. 2. Always try to make new shooters/members feel welcome. Give them the most valuable thing you have - your time. 3. Don't handle anyone else's gun without asking. They may not be discreet if they object! 4. Use only factory ammo in any borrowed gun. Self explanatory, isn't it? 5. Never be late arriving at the field. Always consider 15 minutes before your allocated shooting time to be the minimum time to arrive at the field. 30 minutes before is considered ideal, and most of the experts recommend an hour before to get yourself ready to shoot, physically and mentally. 6. Don't put hold point markers on a field. It's against the rules and bad form to place anything on the field that you can reference. Standard markings are reference enough. 7. Always introduce yourself when shooting on a new squad. Seems simple enough, but don't forget. 8. Extend professional courtesy to the referee. He is there to do a job and so are you. He is Page 6 RED CHUTE GAZETTE

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 4 SKEET SHOOTING ETIQUETTE (continued) Page 7 trying as hard as you to do that job correctly. He is probably more experienced at pulling targets than you are! 9. Never fire unannounced test shots. 10. Don't subject others to your bad reloads. Save them for practice if you must shoot them. 11. Don't waste time and targets on Station #1. One high, one low, one double to start a flight, and a single high before each box should suffice. 12. Don't call too loudly or softly. Too loud and you'll have targets flying on adjacent fields, and too soft and you'll not get your birds when you should. 13. Don't waste time unnecessarily while shooting. This applies equally to "during" and "between" rounds. Develop a style that allows a smooth continuity of the round. Load two when you have two singles to shoot, be ready to step on the station when the shooter in front of you is done, use only the time you really need between rounds (usually one minute or less) to get ready and begin. Do the math, 5 shooters, 100 targets each is 500 targets in a 90 minute time frame! 14. Don't ask that the trap be cleared unnecessarily. Ask for a "clear" after two consecutive bad birds, or at the minimum level that doesn't interfere with your shooting. 15. Never shoot twice at the same target. Duh! 16. Never throw a tantrum on the field. It's not a measure of class to see reactions to success, but rather to adversity. Don't disturb others because you're having a bad day. 17. Don't mess around after you miss. Others may still be straight. 18. Watch where you eject your empties - they are still your responsibility! 19. Do not pick up hulls during a round. Wait until it's over! 20. Coach only if asked. 21. Always stand out of sight of the person shooting. 22. No talking while someone is shooting. 23. Try not to distract shooters on adjacent fields. 24. Be on time for your shoot off. 25. Be careful carrying your gun on your shoulder. Always carry barrels forward to avoid striking another as you move. 26. Be reasonably quiet when behind the shooting fields. 27. No spectators on a shooting field. Your visit is a distraction whether you think so or not! 28. Take only 25 shells for a practice round. Be fair to the club. 29. Never run anywhere at a gun club. No cell phone may be used on a skeet field to answer incoming or make out-going calls."
