1 Note from Mrs. Thul We have begun our winter sports and I am pleased to say that we have 22 students on the wrestling team and five students that will be joining the AHS bowling teams for this season. Our basketball teams have fought hard in their opening games. I want our fans to know that I appreciate their demeanor and how they have conducted themselves. Yes, the calls may not go our way at times, but please remember that refereeing is not easy. And without people willing to referee due to the negativity they experience, high school sports as we know it would look drastically different. Please encourage people to become referees so that we can continue to provide quality events for our students. Thank you for continuing to be positive in the stands as we cheer on our OWLS! At our first home games, we had students leaving the building during the games and returning after making some poor choices. If students leave the building during home events, they will not be allowed to return without approval by an administrator. The safety and well-being of our students is of the utmost importance. Our first semester comes to a close next week...with Final Exams on Thursday, 12/21, and Friday, 12/22. We will dismiss at 11:30am on 12/22 and have Teacher Inservice in the afternoon to work on our redesign. Looking forward to our 2nd semester, we return from break on Friday, January 5th. On this day, students will have intersession classes they have chosen the classes they wish to take and will receive their schedule before 12/22. I am looking forward to trying out this idea as part of our redesign project. Offering classes on Lacrosse, Moviemaking, Fishing, Life Games, Cooking, and many more is a great way to start off our 2nd semester. Stay tuned for more information in our first newsletter of 2018! 3 FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE Thursday, December 21st Final Exams will be given in 1st, 3rd and 5th hour classes. Classes will be extended to 90 minutes both days. Friday, December 22nd Final Exams will be given in 2nd and 4th hours during the morning hours. GPHS students will be dismissed at 11:30am. No lunch will be served. Buses will run at normal dismissal time (3:22pm). Teacher inservice on Redesign topics will take place in the afternoon. This is the final day for AR points to be earned for 1st semester. KAY CHRISTMAS Craft Fair on December 2nd was a Huge Success! A special thanks to our Booster Club and Dance Team for helping bring Santa to The Nest for all the young children! The funds raised by the craft fair are used by the KAY club to fund various service projects throughout the year, such as the gallons of water they delivered to shut-ins during our recent water boil advisory in the City of Garden Plain. The KAY club also plans to sponsor a family in a third world country through the Heifer International program.

4 FOOD FEST 2017 December 11, 2017 Students in Mr. Lantz Entrepreneurship class formed their own businesses and served lunch to the entire school. Learning how to budget, determine advertising, and figuring profits/losses can be very interesting!

7 Senior Internship Presentations Monday, December 11, 2017 Congrats to Erin Dye, Piper Bourne, Hope Seiwert, Hanna Hoopes, Brooke Foster, Ashlyn Smarsh and Darby Doyle for successfully completing their internships and presenting tonight. You all did a fantastic job! We appreciate the time and effort that Mrs. Clark puts forth to make this program a success! And a special thanks to all the mentors that welcome our students to their businesses...without them, this would not be possible!

8 3-D Art and Slip Casting Students made many different molds...from Owls to King Tut! Students in Mr. Little s 3-D Art class recently learned how to create molds in order to slip cast their own productions in a quick and easy fashion. Hannah Hoheisel s mold was a large King Tut...and the apparatus needed to make the mold was specially designed by Mr. Little. After pouring the slip into the mold, the students had to remove the excess slip by rolling the mold over a bucket to catch the extra slip. After about 20 minutes, the mold is opened and the model of King Tut emerges. The clay figures are then glazed and fired in our kiln.

Classes Resume 1/5/18! Any student wishing to make a schedule change for 2nd semester is ENCOURAGED to do so before leaving for Christmas break. Changes will be allowed the first two days of 2nd semester, January 5th and 8th. No changes will take place after Monday, January 8th. See Mrs. Hatfield ASAP! We still have spots in the C.N.A. and WATC classes!
