1 AHJS Monday Mail Week of 27 March 2017 This News Blast is available electronically via e- mail. Please subscribe at or call AHJS PTO events, past copies of Monday Mails and more can be found online at AHJS News STAAR Testing: The first round of STAAR testing is fast approaching. On Tuesday, 28 March, all 7 th grade students will take the 7 th grade writing exam. On Wednesday, 29 March, all 7 th grade Pre- AP math students as well as all 8 th grade Pre- Algebra students will take the 8 th grade math exam. On Thursday, 30 March, all 8 th grade students will take the 8 th grade reading exam. Friday, 31 March, will be used as a make- up day for any absences. The campus will be closed to all visitors all week (even if your child is not testing). Academic Integrity and Extracurricular Code: AHISD leaders have dedicated a great amount of time to the review and revision of the current Academic Integrity and 24 Hour Code of Leadership Guidelines over the past few months. You can review the final revisions of the updated Academic Integrity and Extracurricular Code as well as the overview to the process on our website: Save the Date: 6 th, 7 th & 8 th grade field trips Friday, 21 April. (6 th grade - Camp Champions / 7 th grade - Fiesta Texas/ 8 th grade Sons Island). 8 th grade Parents: 8 th grade Graduation will take place on Wednesday, 24 May, 6:30pm (Auditorium). Semester End Date School Year: Based on feedback from our District Educational Advisory Council, as well as input from the AHJS and AHHS staff, we are changing the first semester end date on our school calendar for the school year. The end of the first semester will now fall directly before the start of the December holiday. You can find the updated calendar on our website: Study Hall: AHJS will have Study Hall next week and through all STAAR testing dates to be able to provide students with a quiet space to study if they see fit and accommodate the grade levels that may not be testing. Showcase of Engaged Learning: On Wednesday, 5 April 2017, from 6:00-7:30 pm at the High School, they ll have their annual AH Showcase of Engaged Learning. This is an evening where teachers and students from across AHISD come together to showcase the engaging work that is occurring in their classrooms. The theme this year is Shaping Our Future. AHISD hopes you will plan to attend. A copy of the flyer can be found at parents/student_flyers. Library News: Your books are wanted! In conjunction with the Girls Service Club, the AHJS Library is preparing to host a used book sale to benefit the library. Please send in gently used books that you no longer want, and AHJS will find them a new home. Please tell your friends and neighbors. Thank you for your support! A lot of learning happens in the library. Follow the blog at or find them on to see all of the exciting things happening here. Mental Health First Aid training: Ms. Pringle, School Nurse at AHJS, will be offering low- cost Mental Health First Aid training on through upcoming Saturdays. This all- day training will teach you how to provide initial help to someone experiencing a mental health crisis. Training is open to the AHISD community and staff (18 and over). The goal of the training is to decrease stigma and increase literacy surrounding Mental Health. Please register at the links below, space is limited. April 8 Course: and May 13 Course: Still haven t ordered your yearbook? There are three different ways to order the Yearbook this year, by Mule Market, the AHJS Office, or through Mrs. Osborne's Journalism Class. The cost of the Yearbook is $36 until 30 April; the price goes up to $40 on 1 May All checks should be made out to AHISD, and include the word "Yearbook" on the memo line. If you are not sure if you've ordered one already through Mule Market, please ahjsjournalism@gmail.com, and they will check for you! Study Hall: Homework help is available for AHJS students every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4:00-5:00pm in the AHJS library. There are two to three teachers available to help AHJS students with their homework. Morning AHJS Library Hours: Students will be allowed to come into the library as early as 7:30am Monday through Friday. This is a great opportunity for students to complete work and/or read a book. Destination Imagination is hosting a FUNdraising Day on Sunday, 2 April, from 12:00pm to 2:00pm. The event will be held at Woodridge Auditorium and will include performances by the Destination Imagination teams beginning at 12:15pm. Come enjoy lunch for $5 and bid on some auction items.
