General Dance sessions Attendances at community dance sessions: over 600 The start of this quarter showed a strong start after the Christmas break, with all Street Dance classes staring back with strong numbers. There was an air of excitement at the sessions as students returned to classes to discover the results from their Street Dance exams that they sat in December. All dancers passed with flying colours, with 93% being the highest mark in the School. All students were busy in January preparing for the Street Dance presentation on 1 st February 2015 at Walkden British Legion. The event was a sell-out; great parental support was shown for all dancers and groups. Along with building self-confidence and self-esteem, the presentation events have started to encourage team building within the street dance programme. They allow for young people from groups that are held across the city to interact socialise and learn from each other. As always, the feedback from parents was extremely encouraging with many commenting on the developments in confidence in their child since joining the classes and taking part in the exams and presentations. The students are currently preparing their team, solo s and double routines for the forthcoming in house street dance competition on 17 th May The competitions encourage team building and sportsmanship. They also allow the young people to showcase their creativity and talent. The Rainbow Rooms class for young people with a disability runs with very positive attendances on a weekly basis. The group participated in the exams in December with all participants passing with very promising results. The young people also took part in the presentation at Walkden British Legion on 1 st February The group performed with great confidence and precision. All community dance classes for adults with a disability have continued to run with very encouraging attendances throughout this quarter. The session at The Valley continues to be at capacity and the Beesley Green class has between participants each week. The class at the Link project also continues to run well with participants feeding back how much they enjoy the classes. SCL School of Dance Attendances at School of Dance sessions: over 2,700 The babies, pinks, lilacs and Tuesdays Ballet and Tap class at Swinton and Pendlebury Leisure Centre have all seen increases in attendances during this quarter with the baby s class attendances almost doubling. The blues, reds and senior groups are all currently running close to capacity. The dance school saw a steady increase in attendances as the showcase drew closer. The team held a Freestyle presentation on the 18 th January at Walkden British Legion. Once again the freestyle students took to the floor to impress family and friends with their exam routines. They then received their wellearned awards. The event was a great success with everyone commenting how much they enjoy the presentations as they love to see their child progress and the progression throughout the school. To help raise funds for dance costumes for the showcase on 15 th March 2015, the team held a Valentine s family fundraiser at Walkden British Legion on 13 th February
2015. The event was very enjoyable with Mr and Mrs games, a quiz, football cards and other activities. The event provided good contributions towards the costume funds. The team ran a dress rehearsal on 1 st March at Swinton and Pendlebury Leisure Centre to help the young people and volunteers prepare for the showcase. The rehearsal provided an excellent opportunity for the young people to build their confidence and self esteem. The event also assisted in encouraging and reinforcing a sense of team and togetherness throughout the school. The students left with great enthusiasm and excitement for the showcase on 15 th March. The adult classes have been successfully moved to Guild hall with good attendances in the Tap and Street Classes. The Ballet Fit class will be cancelled after the Easter break, a new disco class at Swinton and Pendlebury Leisure Centre after Ballet and Tap will take its place. Over 140 students took to the stage at The Lowry Theatre on 15 th March 2015 to perform in SCL School of Dance s A Journey through Oz. The showcase depicted the story of the classic tale The Wizard of Oz. The teachers utilised cleaver and interesting choreography to develop and portray the characters of Dorothy, Tin Man, Scarecrow and Lion, whilst introducing themes from more modern versions of the classic tale from the West End hits The Wizz and Wicked. The event was a great success with both performances at capacity. Wonderful costumes, cleaver choreography and hard work from the young people made this showcase the best to date. The team have received an inordinate amount of positive feedback with parents congratulating the team for producing an organised and professional production. All young people performed with excellent technique and confidence, they are a credit to the dance school. School programme Attendances at schools sessions: over 900 The team deliver four after school clubs per week at Monton Green and Grosvenor Road Primary Schools. The Grosvenor Road groups joined their peers at the Street Dance Presentation at Walkden British Legion on 1 st February They performed with great rhythm and style and received excellent marks in their exams. All four groups are now preparing their routines for the forthcoming Street Dance competition. The team have continued the delivery of a weekly session at Chatsworth High School with Chatsworth Futures. Chatsworth Futures are a group of college age students with disabilities. All participants are showing excellent progression with many showing developments in gross motor co-ordination and musicality. The team have been commissioned to deliver 12 weeks of dance provision at Springwood Primary School for their nursery and reception class. The sessions have received great feedback, with the dance teacher seeing good progression in the students dance technique and gross motor skills. Springwood Primary School are continuing the sessions after the Easter Holidays for the next school term. Alderbrook Primary School commissioned the to deliver 10 weeks of street dance activities. Again the sessions have received very positive feedback from students and teachers with advancements being demonstrated in dance ability and musicality. Competitions This quarter has seen a quieter period for the Freestyle competitors. However, highlights include both teams winning their sections in February against teams from across the North West. This meant that the younger team Tuti Fruties now advanced into the intermediate sections. The senior team showcased their new Maleficent Team routine
which has received excellent reviews and results. March s competition in Leigh saw many competitors making the finals and semifinals. The younger team were awarded second place in their first competition in intermediates and the older team won first place! The team attended Rossendale dance Festival on 8 th February. The students took part in Ballet, Tap, Modern, Street, Contemporary and Musical Theatre Sections. The students performed solo routines choreographed to highlight their strengths. The sections were busy with some sections having nearly 30 competitors. One of the street dancers came 1 st out of 27 entries! Other highlights include 1 st place in Musical Theatre and Modern, 2 and 3 rd Place in Tap, 3 rd place in Ballet, 3 rd Place in Contemporary, 1 st Place in Street Dance and 2 nd and 3 rd place in street doubles. Fabulous set of results! Holiday programme The team ran a Freestyle Building Day at Ordsall Leisure Centre in partnership with the Gymnastics Team. The students practised their freestyle technique in the morning and then joined the gymnastics team in the afternoon to practice their gymnastics tricks and movements. A sense of team is integral to the success of the freestyle competitors as support and encouragement from the school is vital in the success and confidence of the young people. The team ran a dance, gymnastics, trampoline and arts and crafts camp for young people with a disability. The event was well attended with the young people enjoyed the variety of activities on offer. The participants learnt a routine to Up Town Funk and then took to the trampoline and gymnastics floor to take part in further activities. After lunch the young people participated in creative arts and craft activities. The day finished on a high with a gymnastics class. Parents have called for similar activities in the next half term.
Inclusive Activities Salford Community Leisure s services and activities are influenced by the demographic profile of local communities. SCL strive to provide inclusive services and activities to enable everyone to be active in their chosen leisure pursuit. The team have continued to run the sessions at The Rainbow Rooms this quarter. New participants have joined and have settled in well and started to form friendships with other young people at the session. The lesson continues to have a warm and welcoming feel with a strong sense of friendship and support being evident. The session also encourages friendships to develop with parents and carers. The group participated in the Street Dance exams in December 2014 and took part in the Street Dance presentation on 1 st February 2015 at Walkden British Legion. The group performed with great skill and confidence, they all received very encouraging marks in their exams. The team have continued the delivery of the weekly session at Chatsworth High School for their college age students throughout this quarter. The students continue to show great progression in gross motor skills, coordination and musicality. The team are to continue the delivery of the session into the next quarter. Springwood Primary School commissioned the to deliver 12 weeks of dance activities for their nursery and reception students. The theme for the dance activities was animals. The children explored a variety of movement patterns for different animals and learnt dances to a number of animal themed songs. The are continuing the delivery of the session during the next school term, this time the theme will be transport. The team has continued to deliver the two community dance classes for adults with a disability at the Valley Community Centre and Beesley Green Community Centre. Both sessions are running at capacity with continued positive feedback from participants and carers. The team also run a class at The Link in Eccles. This is a closed session for people who attend The Link. The participants at all classes continue to demonstrate improvements in overall co-ordination and agility and have shown improvements in communication skills during the sessions. The continue to provide a teacher to deliver dance and movement for older people at Irlam Steel Club. This is in partnership with Salford Heart Care group. The low impact and moderate activity session is aimed at increasing mobility, stamina and coordination incorporating fun, age appropriate music and steps. This quarter s dances include; Up on a roof and Do wa diddy
Case Study This quarter s case study is based on the comments, thoughts and feeling of two children who attend the dance class at the Rainbow Rooms Community Centre for young people with a disability. The children commented on how nice it is to be able to dance with their peers in an environment where people don t care about each others disability and that they can dance with their friends in a fun and friendly class. They highlighted that they enjoyed attending the presentation and dancing at the family disco that followed, they enjoyed performing in front of their family and friends. Music and fun forms a large part of the class, both children highlighted how they really enjoyed that element. The parent of one of the children commented on how her child likes the dance class because it allows her to access the dance activities that her sister has through attending a dance school. From attending the class at the Rainbow Rooms her daughter has had a chance to perform on stage at The Lowry and take exams; something that she wouldn t be otherwise able to do. The parent also commented on how the session has allowed her to make a new network of friends. It had allowed her to talk to parents that are in a similar situation and has provided an opportunity to share information about classes and attend new sessions together. Forthcoming Events / Activities in Quarter th April - dance, trampoline, gymnastics and arts and crafts activity camp for young people with a disability 10 th and 17 th April - street dance sessions for WASP 14 th -17 th April - street dance camp at Boothstown Community Centre Street dance competition on 17 th May at Swinton and Pendlebury Leisure Centre Dance showcase on 28 th June at The Lowry Theatre
