1 Important Dates: Superhero Charity Run 28 th May 1 st June Half Term 4 th June School re-opens SMSC Question of the week: KS3 Question and KS4 Question: If the story of your life flashed before your eyes, would it be worth watching? Would you be proud to show it to others? Would they be inspired, touched, impressed? What will your legacy be? What can you do to make the greatest story ever told? On Friday 4 th May, 90 students along with 11 members of staff, took part in a charity run through Hurst Grange Park dressed as Superheroes in aid of Rock FM s Superhero Day raising money for Cash for Kids. Rock FM also visited our school to support our run along with approximately 20 other superheroes Batman was most definitely my favourite! They brought their Cash for Kids tour bus as well as a Fire Engine and their Ecto-1 car! Steve and Janine from Rock FM s breakfast show started the run off with Wonder Woman (Mr Farringdon) and Superman (Mr Herbert), leading the sprinters at the front, whilst Bat Woman (Mrs Embley) and Mrs America (Miss Davies) stayed at the back keeping the troops together! It was a very successful run and the girls all looked fantastic in their costumes. They each received a stick of rock from Rock FM for their hard work. The sponsor money already seems to be rolling in, making the event even more of a success. Well done to everyone involved! Mrs Davda 1
2 Religious Studies and Community Studies Department News We would like to say we have thoroughly enjoyed our first year as a school group of Soroptimisses and we can only hope for as much success in the years to come! We have accomplished many things this year, including sponsoring Zodwa s secondary school education in Swaziland. We did this by raising 250 on sports day at school, selling cakes and drinks. We have kept in contact with Zodwa and are happy to say she is doing great! We have also looked at other charities to fund and the one we have chosen this year is Toilet Twinning. Our school held our own Tenner Challenge where each form group had to come up with new and exciting ideas to make as much profit from the original 10 we were given. Thanks to the hard work of our Soroptimisses group and with the help of the rest of the school, we managed to raise 700. This has been donated to fund the building of toilet blocks. After such a successful first year, we have now begun to look to the future and think about what we would like to do next year. We plan to utilise our upcoming sports day and plan a fundraiser for new charities that need support. We are looking to donate to charities that help to improve education for girls and young children - one of these plans to donate laptops to schools in more deprived areas allowing them to access a higher standard of education. Overall, we feel we have had a brilliant start this year and can t wait for the next one! The PGHS Soroptimisses 2

Mrs Burns, Head of PE This year we are extremely privileged to have Jenny Meadows as our Guest Speaker and to hand out the main awards. Jenny is a British athlete. Her main event is the 800m, although she previously competed over the 400m. She is the fourth-fastest British woman over 800m and she was the winner in the English Schools Junior Championships in 800m in In 1998, she was 3rd at the AAA Junior Indoor Championships over 400 m. She also made her junior international debut and finished second in the English Schools Championships. She qualified for the semi-final of the 800m in the Olympic Games in She won a bronze medal in the 2009 World Championships and won a bronze medal in the European Athletics Championships in She won the Diamond League overall 800m title and was 800m National Champion in Jenny captained the Great Britain Team to the European Championships in It goes without saying that given the amazing list of achievements, we are very much looking forward to showing Jenny what the girls have achieved and to have an insight into her life and sporting achievements. 3
