1 TWO Mandatory DRESS Rehearsals June 7 th & 8 th Bridgeport High School Auditorium 5:00 PM-10:00 PM This is a closed rehearsal; no outside spectators or guests are permitted in the audience area without permission from the Executive Director. General Guidelines Rehearsal time is very important as it allows students to become comfortable with the performance area and costumes. Students need to become familiar with staging, cues for lighting, music, sets and other logistics in order to have a well organized, professional performance. For these two dress rehearsals Where The Wild Things Are is a mini production which includes all students so we will start with Scene #1 and follow the order of performances ending with the Finale. This helps students & backstage helpers determine the amount of time they have to change clothing, get props on and off stage, timing for line ups, etc. Each number will perform at least one time, in order, then leave stage promptly and return to dressing area to change and line up for next number or be dismissed if they have no other numbers to rehearse. As soon as your child has completed all their dances they are free to leave. Before student leaves make sure all costumes and accessories are neatly returned to racks, baskets with names clearly visible and ready for Friday night production. **Complete Costuming and Stage Make-up are required as pictures & videos will be taken during these rehearsals. MAKE UP REQUIREMENTS: Apply wine colored lipstick and blush as stage lights can cause faces to wash out and appear unusually white. No bright red lipstick or blush. Mascara, eyeliner is optional but not required. All make-up must appear uniformed...no extreme designs on eyes or face unless it is required by instructor. Please try to apply Stage Make-up for older students (neutral eye shadows, liner, mascara (false eyelashes are optional) plus the wine colored lip and blush colors. Hair Design For All Female Students: All students must have hair neatly secured off of face so that their faces can be seen while dancing and also so that the hair does not become a distraction or cause them not to be able to see where they are going. This year all female, Levels 1 & up are required to wear two French braids for both dress rehearsals and both production nights. Please check with your instructor if you are not sure how to style hair. If your child s hair is too short for French braids then please secure it neatly off face with clips.

2 COSTUMES: Please make a checklist of your child s routines and gather all accessories, shoes, and makeup several days in advance. Remember to label all items with your child s name. Costume CARE: In preparation for the production, please place costumes on hanger after you receive them to keep them neat, clean and unwrinkled. For tutus, it is recommended to separate and fluff layers then hang them upside down by the crotch so they will stand out fully. Costumes for Lower Level Students, ages 4-12: Costumes will be brought to the Wednesday Dress Rehearsal at 5PM and placed on specific racks (corresponds to the dance/scene). Students Costumes must be clean, neat (not wrinkled) and hung up neatly on CLASS COSTUME RACKS (provided by the studio) before and after students dance. Everything should be labeled with student s name. Hair accessories must be placed in a baggie with student s name on it so it can be hung with costume on hangers. Costumes/accessories must be neatly hung up, sorted and placed in baskets/cubes after each rehearsal and after the Friday evening performance and ready to be used Saturday. Students must take all costumes home after Saturday evening s performance Please remember to bring a small basket, laundry basket or storage cube to place all your shoes, costume pieces, tights, hair bands/ spray/ pins, make-up, etc. Please make sure your name is on this basket and on everything that belongs to you costumes, shoes, tights, leotards, costume accessories, etc Costumes for Upper Level Students, 12 & up: You will be bringing all costumes and accessories to the Wednesday Dress Rehearsal and hanging them on your own personal rack in order of performances. All costumes must be clean, neat and not wrinkled. Make sure all costumes are labeled with your names! ONLY Upper Level Students (levels 3 & up) are permitted to bring their costumes to the theatre on Tuesday, June 6 th. This will give you more time to organize your many costumes and dressing area. DO NOT ARRIVE BEFORE 7:00 PM SO WE HAVE TIME TO ASSEMBLE SOME COSTUME RACKS AND PREPARED THE DRESSING AREAS. The Studio provides a few class dance racks but If the student has many costumes and needs to keep them together and organized for quick changes, we recommend that they purchase a small clothing rack. They are under $10 at Wal-Mart or Target. Please remember to bring a small basket, laundry basket or storage cube to place all your shoes, costume pieces, tights, hair bands/ spray/ pins, make-up, etc. Please make sure your name is on this basket and on everything that belongs to you costumes, shoes, tights, leotards, costume accessories, etc After each Dress Rehearsal and after Friday evening s performance, all costumes must be hung

3 up neatly and ready to use for Saturday evenings performance. Do not leave the dressing rooms until you have made sure everything is ready to go for the next night. Students, it is your responsibility to make sure your costumes are ready for the next evening rehearsal / performance before leaving the theater each evening. It is not the directors, instructors or backstage helper s job to insure your costumes are ready to go for the next night. At the conclusion of Saturday evenings performance students must take all costumes home unless they belong to the studio. When, Where & How Should I Arrive? 1) All dancers arrive Wednesday & Thursday evening for Dress Rehearsal at 4:45-5PM with hair fixed, make-up on and ALL costumes, accessories, baskets, etc. 2) Check in at the table in the cafeteria area. Someone will be seated at the table to guide you to your dressing area. 3) Please enter through the backstage entry (not main entrance) to BHS. Upon arriving to BHS please follow the road that leads to the back of the school, backstage entrances. A door will be designated with signs as the backstage entrance. There is a small parking area so you will need to drop your student off then proceed to the front parking area and enter through front entrance if you are not working backstage. Sign your child in, proceed to dressing area and if you are not working backstage you must exit through the same backstage entrances. 4) There will be a brief meeting in the auditorium for all participants at 5:30 PM. Just find a place to sit near the front and you will be given instructions on procedures for the rehearsals and performances. 5) After meeting return to the dressing areas ready to go! BACKSTAGE MOMS: If you are working backstage in the dressing rooms or other backstage positions then you should be present at all rehearsals and arrive no later than 5:00pm and remain in the dressing areas with the students to practice getting students on and off stage, costume changes, etc. Please remember that an important part of your job is to maintain order, correct conduct when necessary, and keep all unauthorized persons from entering the dressing areas. No student is permitted to roam the hallways, lobby area, or stage/auditorium without supervision and permission. Unfortunately, most restrooms are located in the lobby/entrance area to the auditorium and it may be necessary to use these when the waiting line is too long for the one in the

4 Green Room so please use your best judgment and send a parent to accompany students to restrooms in the lobby area to ensure their quick and safe return to dressing areas. Do not stand in wings in the path of students while waiting on sides. No talking in wings or backstage period whisper only when necessary. NO picture taking from wings. Familiarize yourselves with line ups, production order, posted on walls. STAGE CREW: Arrive no later than 5pm for Rehearsal and Production Nights and report to area where you will be working, for example, backstage props, curtain, sound, ushers at doors, etc. Prop Committee We would like you to be there as soon as possible (auditorium is open at 5:00pm).

5 THEATER ETIQUETTE & AUDITORIUM/ Stage RULES **NO JEWELRY OR GUM PERMITTED Drinks: Students may only bring water for drinking. The studio will also supply water in the dressing area for students. BHS does not permit other beverages in the auditorium or backstage. No juice, Starbucks, soft drinks! Snacks: It will be a long evening so you may send sandwiches (lunch meats/cheese, pepperoni rolls, etc.) or snacks for your children. NO PEANUT PRODUCTS permitted in the dressing areas or backstage as some students have severe peanut allergies. No sticky snacks (i.e. gummy bears, starburst), puddings, peanuts/peanut butter, jelly, chocolate, pizza, or other items which would cause stains on the costumes. We recommend crackers, granola/cliff bars, fruit (bananas, apple slices, grapes), cheese sticks, etc. No eating in Auditorium period as this is the rules of BHS. Please remember all API families conduct will influence the decision by BHS to allow API to use the high school auditorium and theatre for future events. Backstage Extras: Parents may send electronic games, board /card games, puzzles, coloring books (with washable crayons no markers). This will keep students busy and occupied I also advise students bring small blankets to sit on before and after their performances. All cell phones must be turned off during rehearsal and performance times. If there is an emergency please give your parents the following phone number to contact us and we will then contact you: Maureen Yeager, Parents please only call if there is an emergency. Students must be on their best behavior respecting the staff and other student s space and property. Students are not permitted to roam the building unattended as this is against BHS policies. If you bring valuable items (laptops, ipads, expensive jewelry, etc.) to the rehearsals we cannot secure them and are not responsible for missing or damaged items! ALL Students and Backstage Team: Turn off all cell phones during rehearsal times. Cell phones are a distraction to everyone on so many levels. In case of emergency, your family can reach me at: to leave a message. Students must leave all cell phones in their bags and must have them turned off! If you cannot observe this rule, your phone will be placed in a basket with the Executive Director and you may retrieve it at the end of rehearsals/performances. One parent or guardian may accompany each student under the age of 10 to the dress rehearsal. Please, no siblings left unattended. We do not allow any other spectators during rehearsals as it can be distracting to the students. If you are assisting with the program and will be present for the duration of

6 the rehearsal, please do not bring young children who are unsupervised and left to roam the building unattended as this is against BHS policies. If you are not working backstage, parents or guardians should bring the students, sign them in and receive a colored bracelet which must be shown when picking up children after the show. Students will be placed under the supervision of their teacher and/or their class mom(s). If you wish, you may leave and return at the end of rehearsal to retrieve their children. Students must remain in the dressing room with their class during dress rehearsal and the production, returning there in between dance or music numbers. Parents or guardians of children under the age of 12 not working backstage are permitted to remain quietly in the back of auditorium until their children have been dismissed.
