1 Weekly Bulletin Lent Term Week 11 23rd March 2018 A note from the Headmistress There s not let up in the pace as we approach the end of term. Our quiz team of Cerys L, Clemmie, Sophie P and Dilys kept me on the edge of my seat in the second round of the Gwent Wildlife quiz, snatching victory on a second tie break question and making it through to the finals. I particularly appreciated the fact that Dilys knew the answer to the tie breaker because she had been alert earlier in the quiz and remembered she had seen the answer then! The week has been filled with music; such a great concert with Year 5 pupils from across the Monmouth primary schools! Our girls enjoyed joining together with other pupils their age to share a love of singing. We have had a great week too at the Herefordshire Festival of the Performing Arts with many medals and I would like to extend my congratulations to all those who competed. Of course, we took the whole school to compete in the choir classes. Why not? Herefordshire Performing Arts Festival Winners All week there have been choirs singing and instruments playing. It s been the Herefordshire Performing Arts Festival and our girls have done fabulously well. 2 You can do it MGP! by Dilys, Year 5 Be still for the presence of the Lord, the holy one is here, come bow before him now, with reverence and fear. On Tuesday 20th March we sang our hearts out when we appeared with a puff of smoke (aka a very willing bus driver who took us on the endless journey from Monmouth to Hereford), at Herefordshire Performing Arts Festival. The first contenders were the Years 3 and 4 choir and then following in their wake were the Years 5 and 6 choir who won the hymn class with Be Still for the Presence of the Lord and Lord, Make Me a Mountain. We also did extremely well in the solo classes and the small choir performed the next day (Wednesday 21st March) but Mr Steer is proud of us all. We were ready for a change of pace when we were provided with an energy boosting lunch before racing across to let off steam at the local park. There were about ninety Inglefielders running around in a very confined space; playing tag and climbing over everything in sight, but we were very lucky to catch a rare sighting of Freya L on the tiny swings!

Read on and I will tell you the story. Hereford Performing Arts Festival is where schools from around the area come to compete against each other. Monmouth School Girls Prep has entered this competition for a number of years. So what are we waiting for MGP, we can win this. Tuesday 20th March was an exciting day as we picked up our packed lunches, then set off on a coach to Hereford. Thirty minutes later, we arrived at our destination. We were all so hungry that the teachers allowed us to eat at least 1 item from our lunch boxes. It was then show time! Before long, it started. There were many different but interesting songs being sung from Donna Nobis Parchem to Kookaburra to A Million Dreams. It was then our turn. We sang Donna Nobis Parchem and then Laugh Kookaburra by Bob Chilcott. All the other schools sang and then the scores were in 1st place= Hereford Cathedral School 2nd place= Saint Frances 3rd place= Eastern Primary School Better Luck next time Inglefield. Don t give up. Lunch time, girls said Mr Evans. We sat and ate our delicious lunch and then went to the nearby park. Laughter was all you could hear from the girls. We all had so much fun. It was soon time to leave the park and head back to the Performing Arts competition. We had been entered into the hymn competition. We listened to all the other schools perform their amazing hymns and then finally it was our turn. We sang Be still for the Presence of the Lord and Lord make me a Mountain. We all really enjoyed performing and nervously waited for the results. Finally the scores were in. 1st place= Monmouth School Girls Prep We could not believe it. We had finished on a high. Well done MGP. Not forgetting you Mr Steer. All your hard work has paid off.

4 Year 6 in London... Pondering... by Isabelle D, Year 6 At last! We have the path to MGP back, but have you noticed any thing different about it? Well, let me give you a clue, it is a hole in the ground and it has water in it. Have you got it yet? Oh well I tried. There is a pond. I shall now tell you about how it came about: Dr Murcott has been trying to do exciting things outside for science for ages. He loves teaching about nature and biology but he has not been able to teach anything about that things that live in the water because he didn t have a pond. So he asked Mrs Phillips and she talked about it with the other staff and the school council. They all decided it was an amazing idea and, thanks to the Friends of Monmouth School for Girls, she found some money so they could have it dug out. A Real Song and Dance! Year 3 have danced and sung their way through their RS sessions this week. We have been exploring websites and completing various language, art/craft activities to recognise and begin to understand certain aspects of the Jewish faith. We explored a collection of Jewish artefacts and made Torah scrolls before getting together to dance and sing our Hanukkah song.

5 The Call of Naturesbase by Issy Sm, Year 5 First thing on Monday morning we all woke up feeling excited and nervous, so we quickly jumped out of bed and raced to the kitchen to eat our delicious breakfast, then we sped up the stairs to get changed into our outfits ready for our first day. Finally we collected our toothbrush and slowly squirted a thin long line of tooth paste. We emotionally and excitedly gave our family and pets a big hug and kiss. Secondly around about the same time we all got in our cars, put our bag in the boot of the car and started to drive. Some of us thought that we had forgotten something but our mums or dads said that we had not forgotten anything and for us to enjoy ourselves. We finally got to school, jumping for joy (parents you don t see this every day do you?). The children got their bags out of the car and dropped them by Miss Lane and kept their rucksacks with them. After dropping our bags in Inglefield we all went outside to get some fresh air, then we did the register to make sure that everybody was here. Then it was onto the bus for the long drive to Naturesbase where we met Gyles. We collected our bags and put them in our dorms, then we walked around the village and did a few games before going to eat some food. Finally we did a night activity before bed. Fun at Naturesbase by Isla, Year 5 We arrived in Mid Wales, awaiting a fabulous view with a whole course ahead of us. After unpacking my clothes, myself and everyone were all eager to start our Naturesbase activities. One of my highlights was being pleasantly rewarded with fresh ice cream, after a 6 mile trek. A night of toasted marshmallows was also a fun experience. I hope we can do another trip like this soon, as Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed Naturesbase. Animals at Naturesbase by Hannah M, Year 5 Year 5 went to Naturesbase for five days and there was a lot of animals. There were two dogs, one called Lily, a big dog, and one called Hugo, a little dog. They also had two cats one is Fluff and the other is Cariad. They also have pigs, one is Sausage, one is Bacon, and they had twelve chickens but with no names. Year 5 had a great and happy, but muddy and wet time. Rosie said The pigs are my favourite animals because they are so cute and you could stroke them and feed them. Lola said The pigs were my favourite animals because they are fluffy and cute. I liked all the animals, to me I liked them all the same. No Stopping Year 4 This week Year 4 have been busy working on decimal fractions in maths, ordering numbers with two decimal places and writing fractions as decimal fractions. In RS, we have continued our topic on Sikhism, learning about the 5Ks. We are very excited about our English story writing, which is based on a beautiful story called The Princess Blankets. Sharing ideas and modelling the creative writing process has helped the girls begin devising their own stories, writing imaginative descriptions of the main characters and creating their own blankets based on the four elements. Other events this week, included the Hereford Music Festival, House netball and a Easter themed puppet show.

6 Cartoon by Saskia, Year 6 House Netball by Eva, Year 6 She shoots...she scores! Year 3 and 4 house netball has kicked off to a great start. Four houses, one umpire, who will win? Off they go! Running, jumping. Bounding and leaping, all eager to get the ball. And Imbert Terry have the ball, nice save Prosser! And Mather Jackson takes the back line pass, great marking from Bagnall Oakeley! After long and tiring matches the girls are taken up to the dining hall. And the results are in! Drumroll please...in Year 3 third place, Imbert Terry! In joint second Prosser and Bagnall! And that leaves Mather Jackson in first place! Now for Year 4, in joint third...mather and Prosser! In second, Imbert Terry. And first place goes to Bagnall Oakeley! Great work girls! We can t wait for next year!
