7 On this day in 1986, Oprah Winfrey became the first African American woman to host a nationally syndicated talk show. Winfrey, was born in rural Mississippi and began her TV career as a local news anchor in Nashville and Baltimore before moving to Chicago in 1984 to host a low-rated morning talk program. She quickly turned the show into a ratings winner, beating out a popular talk program hosted by Phil Donahue. Two years later The Oprah Winfrey Show was broadcast nationally and went on to become the highest-rated talk show in TV history. The show was produced in Chicago from 1986 to Oprah Winfrey is considered one of the richest and most influential women in the United States and is known for being a media executive, actress, talk show host, and television producer. Winfrey is a generous supporter of education and has given away over $400 million to educational causes, including nearly 400 scholarships to Morehouse College, and more than $40 million in operating support for the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy in South Africa. She s also given at least $10 million to A Better Chance. Its mission is to improve access to quality education for students of color, and has given $1 million or more to at least nine different charter school organizations in a number of different areas throughout the country.

10 The Annual Blues Dance is TONIGHT! The Blues Dance is TONIGHT from 6-8 PM. Any student who has a buddy room movement or discipline referral will not be allowed to attend the dance.

11 6th grade Volleyball NEWS: The 6th grade Lady Falcons are off this weekend. They return to action on Saturday, February 16 versus LMS/BC, beginning at 9:30a.m.

14 Cheerleaders will be selling Candy Grams for Valentine s Day this week during all three lunch shifts. For just $0.50, you can have a lollipop delivered to a friend on February 14th. Surprise that special someone with a delicious sweet treat! See a cheerleader or Coach Impson if you have any questions.

15 Beta Club News: There will be a Beta Club meeting on Friday for those students who are competing at the Illinois State Beta Club Convention Feb. 25th and Feb. 26th. We will be meeting in the library at 8:00 a.m. Any 7th grade Beta student who is interested in participating in the Songfest, along with an 8th grade group - the sign up sheet is downstairs across from room 117. Sign up on the bulletin board and come to the meeting on Friday. ALL MEMBERS: If you are interested in buying a Beta Club T-shirt - there will be an order form available at the meeting. Also, see a sponsor for a form, if you do not attend the meeting. Any student interested in volunteering at the Sandburg Chili Supper - see Mrs. Zinnen for permissions slip forms. Saturday, February 23 rd, 11:00 3:00 Forms must be returned to Mrs. Zinnen by Feb. 14th to participate.

16 Scholastic Bowl News Congrats to the A and B teams for going 2-0 with convincing wins over Little Flower and CtK. Both teams are now 6-0 in match play! Friday 2:30 to 4:00: Scholastic bowl practice for those students not part of the MATHCOUNTS pizza party! Saturday: Normal Metcalf Sweetheart Tournament Notes for the Tournament: 1. Any Scholastic Bowl Team member can go 2. Bring money for lunch and dinner 3. Bus leaves FMS at 6:00 AM and will return around 5:00 PM 4. Wear your Scholastic Bowl team shirt!!!
