5 Welcome To Rockford High School A Message to Student-Athletes, Parents & Fans A student s education does not end at the conclusion of the school day if they are involved in extra-curricular activities. Some values, in fact, can be better learned through the involvement in activities such as drama, music, and athletics, rather than in the classroom. Values such as fairness, caring, responsibility, and respect are the foundations of sportsmanship. The focus of high school athletics should be on the learning of these lifelong values. In order for these principles to be taught, it is critical that everyone players, coaches, parents, and fans conducts themselves in a sportsman-like manner. Unfortunately, the failure on the part of even one of these groups can undermine the efforts of others. Some individuals call the disrespect shown by taunting and trash talking as just a part of the game. If schools and communities are to justify programs, they must unite to let students, student-athletes, parents, spectators and communities know that disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated in our athletic programs. Sportsmanship is defined as those qualities of behavior which are characterized by generosity and genuine concern for others. That means a concern for everyone, including opposing teams, coaches, fans, and officials. To our parents: Please fill the stands in support of your sons and daughters, while realizing that high school athletics are a form of education, and that the score is not nearly as important as the lessons learned. To our fans: Please display a positive attitude at all times, doing your best to discourage cheers that taunt opposing teams, fans, and officials cheers that distract from the focus of high school athletics. To our athletes: Remember that you volunteered to be a part of Rockford High School athletics, and that all of your actions are a reflection on yourself, your team, your school, and the whole community. Please conduct yourself in a manner that brings honor and pride to the community of Rockford. And to everyone: Enjoy the game and remember Good Sports are Winners! 47 RAMS To Remember RAMS BASKETBALL IN THE STATE FINALS Rams to Remember honors the Rockford Basketball team, which posted a perfect 28-0 record in winning Class A state championship, and the State runner up team from The team had a 20-0 regular season record, losing to Forest Hills Central in the 2002 district finals. Again finishing undefeated in the regular season, the squad not only avenged its previous year s loss to the Rangers in the district final, but posted two of the greatest comebacks in MHSAA tournament history. In front of the largest crowd ever in the Rockford gymnasium, 4,200 fans watched Rockford come back from a 13 point deficit to Forest Hills Central with only six minutes left in the game. The Rams forced 14 turnovers in the fourth quarter, and went on a 15-0 run, winning After the game, Forest Hills Central s coach credited the Rockford nation with a big part in the win: It felt like the court was 10 feet by 10 feet. In the semi-finals at the Breslin Center at MSU, Rockford faced Detroit Murray Wright. Again, the Rams pulled out a victory after trailing by as many as 15 points in the game. Still behind by 9 points with less than 3 minutes left in the game, strong defensive and offensive rebounding, steals, a blocked shot and 6 consecutive free throws propelled the Rams to the win. In the finals the next day, Rockford faced a Flint Carman-Ainsworth team which included Brandon Carr, Dallas Cowboys cornerback. This time, the Rams lead most of the game, but true to form, the score was tied at 33 with 3 minutes left in the game. The Rams sealed the victory behind 6 consecutive free throws by Michael Redell, winning The team was coached by Rockford legend Steve Majerle, and assistant coach and 2014 Hall of Fame inductee Ryan DeKuiper. Five of the players went on to play college basketball: R. C. Douglas (Cornerstone and Aquinas); Kevin Wurn (Cornerstone), Alex Briggs (Lake Superior State and Spring Arbor); Drew Powell (Hillsdale); and Michael Redell (Cleveland State and Western Michigan). Assistant coach Jared Redell went on to become head varsity basketball coach at East Grand Rapids High School. The squad finished with a 22 6 record, under first year coach Nick Allen, a former Rockford player on a Steve Majerle team. The OK Red co-champions made a surprising run in the playoffs, beating Okemos in the quarter finals by two points and Romulus by one point in the semis. They finally lost by 12 to State champions Saginaw High - in a game in which the Rams had them on the ropes until well into the second half. The team was packed with exceptionally talented athletes as well, six of whom went on to play college basketball. Guard Chad Carlson is starting at Hope College, and Mitch Caywood is a contributor at Lake Forest. Both Scott Nikodemski and Chase Fairchild start for Alma College, as did Ivy Johnson before injuries ended his career. Rob Holmes is in the Alma program as well. Also, Kyle Short (Grand Valley) and Aaron Weston (Wayne State) went on to play Division 2 football. The and Rams basketball teams truly Rams to remember! 47
