1 Dear Directors, 2017 Sunnyvale Marching Invitational Saturday, Oct. 7th 2017 General Information Thank you for selecting to compete at the 5th annual 2017 Sunnyvale Marching Invitational. We appreciate your support and will work hard to ensure you are satisfied with the way in which this contested is run. Being our 5th year, we are striving to not only give you a great experience, but also to start a long lasting tradition of excellence that will hopefully entice groups like yours to come back each year. Please carefully read the instructions below and let us know if you have any questions. Arrival and Registration: Attached is a layout of the SISD grounds and facilities. Many of you are either coming from Hwy 80 to Collins or from I-30 to Bobtown or Beltline Road. We are located at 222 North Collins Rd, Sunnyvale TX and Mark Conaway s cell is Call if you are concerned about directions. Once you arrive you will be greeted by a parking monitor wearing a yellow staff shirt. Buses and Equipment trucks will park in the lot between the HS and MS. Buses and equipment trucks will be allowed to park on the small access road next to the stadium. There, you can quickly unload equipment in the grassy area next to the stadium. Trucks and trailers will be escorted back to the trailer lot for rest of the day. Parent vehicles can park in the lot next to stadium. At the check-in bus entrance, directors will be given a package with all the info needed for the day. Inside the package are the following items: director name badges for access to all areas and hospitality room, two official SMI contest shirts, chaperone wristbands, schedule, and other goodies. Contest headquarters are located in the Sunnyvale Middle School Building (west of the stadium). We will have signs marked to easily find these locations.

2 A hospitality room is available all day for judges and directors in the MS cafeteria. Meals, snacks, and drinks will be provided all day by our band boosters, so feel free to use it whenever needed. For SMI general admission, $5.00 tickets can be purchased at gate. Warm-Up Area Information: A guide will take you from your bus to the warm-up area and then on to the performance area. We will have a small table and tent in the warm-up area with cups and water for the kids as they prepare for performance. Each guide will keep groups on time and attend any given needs. Directors, be sure you keep track of your time, as we cannot deviate from the schedule. Monitor your situation to make sure that you are ready and able to move to performance once you are finished with warm-up. Two warm-up areas will be used; Area A just south of stadium next to Admin building, and Area B, just north of stadium, in front of HS. The walk is close, yet far enough to keep sound from bleeding into stadium. Please keep instrument bells pointed away from the stadium to prevent bleed-over into performing groups. Performance Information: 15 minute time slot for your group. Five minute pre-placement- This time is the same as in UIL. When you cross the field boundary, you will need to set-up, place equipment, and any warm-up that you may have on the field. 45 seconds to performance time, we will begin to announce your group, drum majors, directors and your show title. We will also have your band s name and school mascot name on the scoreboard. Eight minute maximum performance- Timing starts on the first note and movement of your show. Timing will end at your last note of music. Two minute Field Exit- All band members and equipment must be off the field at this time. No cadences entering on and off the field, as it would detract from other groups who will be entering as you exit. Be sure to stop taps when you reach the end of the exit gate. Video recording is exclusive to BG Recording services of Plano. No other taping will be allowed. Each band will receive a great video on flash drive in high quality

3 format in their final packet with close proximity mics used for your band s recorded performance. BG Recording will set up on top of our press box for best view. Post Performance Information: It is your choice whether to take instruments to your buses or into the stands after your performance. If you choose to be in the stands, be respectful of other schools performances. Walking around the stands during a performance is considered rude and will not be allowed. This is not a football game, and we as band stewards want to give our best attention to all of our hard working band members. Sit down and enjoy the shows. Between groups, feel free to move around and visit concessions or restrooms. Concessions and Merchandise Sales: Concessions are available from our Sunnyvale Band Boosters before, during and after the contest. We are serving $5.00- meal deals with your choice of: Hot Dog, Nachos or Burgers. All meals also come with cookie, chips and drink. Also available in concessions are small candy items from $1 to $2; pretzels, candy, drinks, chips, cookies and other small snacks. Tim Elcey BBQ Catering Food Truck will be on site with many great choices of street tacos and other incredible offers. Value priced, you can t go wrong with this local favorite. Kona Ice Snow Cones will be on site just by the stadium. All kinds of refreshing flavors to choose from. Gary Grave Cotton Candy tent will be on site for all who love fresh Cotton Candy. Also available from Pepwear are many choices of band clothing and novelties. Items such as; Instrument Pins, Sweats, Personalized T-Shirts and of course our 2017 SMI t-shirt. Prices range from $5 to $20 and feel free to check out the Pepwear booth at the stadium. Continuing again this year is our 2017 SMI official patches. Stop by the SHS band booster table and you can check out our new, custom made, patches for student letter jackets.

4 Judging: There will be five judges for this event. Two for Music, One for Marching, One for guard and One for percussion. Judges will select based on total scoring, ten bands to advance to finals. Finals will begin at 5:30pm with bands selected at random draw for time slots. At conclusion of finals, judges will select and trophies given for: 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd places, all in open classifications. At conclusion of preliminaries, judges will select caption awards and trophies given: Best in Class 2A Guard, Best in Class 2A Percussion, Best in Class 2A Drum Major, Best in Class 2A Winds Best in Class 3A Guard, Best in Class 3A Percussion, Best in Class 3A Drum Major, Best in Class 3A Winds Best in Class 4A Guard, Best in Class 4A Percussion, Best in Class 4A Drum Major, Best in Class 4A Winds Best in Class 5A Guard, Best in Class 5A Percussion, Best in Class 5A Drum Major, Best in Class 5A Winds All participating bands not advancing to finals will receive a 2017 SMI participation trophy. Presentation of SMI Awards: There will be a drum-major retreat following finals. Drum majors should report to the contest headquarters (Sunnyvale Middle School next to hospitality) to be assigned in performance order and moved to the stadium for presentation of awards. If a band is unable to stay through finals, all packages and trophies can be picked up at the contest office along with the comments sheets and media packet. Judging packets will be made available for non-advancing bands once the announcements for finals are made. Judging sheets for advancing bands will be kept until after finals.
