Page 2 Student Checkout Procedures To ensure a more efficient way to check your child out of school during the day, please adhere to the following: In an effort to avoid interrupting instructional time with the intercom, students need to bring a note designating the time that they should meet you in the front office. Notes should be brought to the front office in the morning for authorization. The signed note will allow your child to leave class at the designated time and meet you in the front office. If your students do not have a note we will not be able to call them to the office until parents are at the school to sign them out. (for example, we cannot call them out of class when you call from your car) For this reason, you may experience delays if your child does not have a note giving prior notification of the early dismissal. Your cooperation with our check in/out procedure will help keep classroom interruptions to a minimum and will get you on your way in a timely manner. Yearbook Information Don t forget to take advantage of the lowest yearbook price of the year! You can purchase the book now for $40, and the $8 personalization includes 4 icons free. This deal ends 8/25/17, so order your yearbook now: School/2018-Yearbook/ /CATALOG_SHOP/ Lost and Found If your student has misplaced an item of clothing, book, water bottle or lunch box, there are lost and found bins at the ends of their grade level hallways, in the Connections hallway and a shelf in the cafeteria. Please have your student check periodically if they are missing items!

Page 3 Clinic News Important It s the beginning of the school year and there is a lot to be done to get your student settled in. Don t forget that ensuring your student is taken care of in the clinic, in terms of food allergies, asthma, diabetes and other health conditions, is very important to Autrey Mill. If you need help in getting paperwork done or have questions about medications for your student, please feel free to contact the clinic from 9:15 a.m. to 4:10 p.m. each day. Thanks and I look forward to a healthy and safe year! During the course of the school year students may get sick and need to go home during the day. Any student that becomes ill while at school should go DIRECTLY to the clinic and NOT call home from his/her cell phone. The clinic needs to keep a record of those students who are ill. Having your child go to the clinic will make it easier for the front desk to locate the student for check-out when you arrive for pick up. Thank you for your cooperation! If you have questions or concerns please call the clinic directly at Pricilla Pappo, Clinic Assistant. AMMS Debate Team Autrey Mill s debate team was awarded a School of Excellence Award for Speech and Debate at the 2017 Middle School National Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama, for finishing in the top 3 in the nation. One team, Annan Biswas & Omer Mujawar, finished 2nd overall!! There were over 70 schools attending nationwide. Autrey Mill s Debate Team is run by Ivy Bridge Academy with Shawn Beyer as the sponsor. We meet every Tuesday 4:15 p.m. - 5:45 p.m. in room F103. We begin September 5 th and the fee is $420 for the first semester and $390 for the second. Come join our debate team and learn debate skills, logic and critical thinking, persuasive speaking and research processing. Become an effective communicator and critical thinker! For more information contact autreymill.ivydebate.com

Page 4 Front Office Tidbit Did you know that for the safety of our students, faculty and staff, the front office is asking that you be prepared at all times to show ID when signing our your student? Forgotten Items It is the students responsibility to check the front office for all forgotten items (homework, lunch, lunch money, books, etc.). The office cannot interrupt classes to notify a student that an item is here. Parents may drop the item in the front office, place the student s name on the white board in front of the cafeteria, and the student will either check the office between classes or see their name on the white board at lunch. Please remind your children of this procedure! Thank you! Take Note for School Year! Autrey Mill Middle School has coordinated with our area schools to hold our Professional Development Days on the following dates. Students will NOT attend school those days. Please plan accordingly. Thursday, October 5, 2017 Thursday, March 8, 2018

Page 5 Little Free Libraries Open at Autrey Mill! Little Free Libraries are a global phenomenon. The small, front-yard book exchanges number 36,000 around the world in 70 countries- from Iceland to Tasmania to Pakistan. Now, two new AMMS branches will be joining the movement to share books, bring people together, and create a community of readers. Autrey Mill s student Little Free Library is located right in front of the G-hall. Students are welcome to take a book to enjoy. A staff Little Free Library has been established in the teacher lunch room so that adults can also join in the fun of sharing books. Book donations will be greatly appreciated throughout the school year. Student books can be dropped in the collection box beside the student Little Free Library. Adult books can be dropped off in the AMMS Front Office, attention Fran Meredith- AMMS Graduation Coach. If you have questions about the AMMS Little Free Libraries, please contact Mrs. Meredith at meredithf@fultonschools.org. To find out more about the Little Free Library movement, please visit

Page 6 Oops I forgot My ipad at Home! It is the students responsibility to come to the office between classes or at lunch time to pick up ipad items. We will hold them behind the desk for the student. The front office is not able to call into the classroom to have them retrieve it. Counselors Corner Home Access Center Thank you for your patience with schedule challenges and changes. As the year progresses, please check Home Access Center (HAC) on a regular basis to review your child s grades. Alerts can be set up so that you are notified if their grade has dropped. Home Access Center login information will be available at Curriculum Night. Please bring your ID! Please make sure all NHI (Not Handed In) assignments are turned in. If your child fails a test with a 69 or below, the teacher will contact you regarding recovery for the test. The recovery for the test must take place in order to prevent your child from failing that particular class. The grading period ends in the middle of October. Interim Progress Reports will go home soon after. Help Sessions Please see below for the link for Help Sessions. They take place from 8:00 a.m.- 8:30 a.m. or 4:10 p.m.- 4:40 p.m. For morning sessions, students must report on time. The teacher for the subject will go to the cafeteria, call the subject and walk the students to the classroom for the help session. HelpSessions.aspx (

Page 11 AMMS Science Olympiad What is Science Olympiad? Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 team events in each division (Division B is middle school; Division C is high school). Each year, a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. By combining events from all disciplines, Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved. Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation. Through Science Olympiad, students, teachers, parents, principals and business leaders bond together and work toward a shared goal. Here is a link to a description of the 23 different events. Student Informational Meeting: Monday, August 28th 4:15 p.m.-4:45 p.m. in the Cafeteria We will host tryouts, then, once teams are selected, weekly meetings will be on Mondays 4:15 p.m. 5:15 p.m. Students should attend the informational meeting if interested in trying out for Science Olympiad. 12 Page 12 Morning Carpool Lane Please pull all the way forward when dropping off your child in morning. This practice helps with traffic flow, reduces friction with the cars behind you, and gives your child a little exercise. Afternoon Dismissal Please make sure that if you are in the carpool line, you do the following: Yield to the students who are crossing the street at the crosswalk at the entrance to the school. Pull all the way to the end of the loading area so that we can safely load cars as efficiently as possible. If you do not use the carpool line, park in the parking lot away from where the buses load and walk to pick up your child at the school entrance.
