5 Show us what you know Since you ve joined 4-H, you ve been attending your 4-H club meetings each month and maybe attending some county workshops and events. It s been great fun, hasn t it! Now it s time to get busy concentrating on your 4-H project work. project work is not usually done at a club meeting. Project work is something you do at home with your family. Getting Started The first place to start is your PROJECT MANUAL. Your manual contains LOTS of information about the project. Read it. Study it. Do the activities in it. Then, go find out even more about your project by talking to people. You might get help from a neighbor, a grandparent, a business owner, a homemaker or your parents anyone who could give you some help. The 4-H Show A special time is set up for every 4-H member in the county to show what they ve learned from their 4-H projects. This event is called the 4-H Show. Jefferson County offers several opportunities to show your project. All shows are held within 10 days in July; they include Dogs/Cars, Crops, General Projects, Horse and Livestock. Practice, Practice,Practice Getting good takes practice. If you are enrolled in a food project, you need to practice making many of the recipes in your food manual. If you are enrolled in woodworking, you need to make several woodworking items to get used to working with the tools. If you are enrolled in sewing, you need to make more than one item to get the hang of using a sewing machine What you should bring It would be very confusing if every 4-H member brought something different to the 4-H show, so there is a VERY SPECIFIC list of the exhibits for each project. This list is found in the 4-H Showbook which is given to each family by their leader in the spring. Show books are still available at the Extension Office. 4-H members should find the EXACT exhibit requirements listed for the projects they enrolled in. These rules change every year, so it s very important to follow the guidebook when preparing your exhibit. 5
6 Creating Posters/Display Boards Make sure your display board is attention-getting. Include information that is brief and easy to read. Make it neat! Include pictures or charts if they help explain your project work. Check your spelling and then check it again. Use intense colors. Try dark lettering against a light background. Recommended size is 36x48. What will the judge ask? A judge will not try to trick or scare you. The judge will probably ask how you made the exhibit what steps you used, what materials you used. They may ask you what you learned. They may ask what areas you had trouble with. They may ask what other things you made in the project. They may ask if you had fun! The most important thing is to be honest with the judge. If you don t know an answer, simply say I don t know. If you got help from your family, tell the judge that too (for safety reasons, some parts of projects should be done with adults.) Getting a Grade and Ribbon You will be spending a lot of time learning about your project, so 4-H rewards you for all you ve learned by giving you a grade, ribbon and premium money based on how well you complete your project. Your grade at the 4-H show is determined by the score you receive from the judge. The judge uses a score sheet designed just for your project. A copy of those score sheets are available from the Extension Office. If your project MEETS ALL THE STANDARDS score sheet, it will receive a BLUE RIBBON. If your project NEEDS SOME IMPROVE- MENT, it will receive a RED RIBBON. If your project NEEDS MUCH IMPROVEMENT, it will receive a WHITE RIBBON. It is important to know that if your exhibit doesn t follow all the rules in the show book, IT CANNOT RECEIVE A BLUE RIBBON. That s why it is so important to read the show book. Remember It s important to remember that no matter what ribbon your project receives, YOU ARE A BLUE-RIBBON KID! As long as you did your best, that s all that matters. Be polite to all of the adults working and helping with the 4-H Show. Volunteer to help your leader during the 4 -H show. Read all the information sent to you, ask questions, and you ll have a GREAT 4-H SHOW EXPERIENCE! Extra Prizes In addition to your blue, red or white ribbon, the judge can award extra ribbons and prizes. BEST OF SHOW One top exhibit in each project area grouping will be picked as the best that day and will receive a Best of Show ribbon. STATE FAIR Judges will select state fair and alternate delegate s base on project completion and conference judging experience. Many times, 4-H members get selected to go to the State Fair in many projects but you may only pick one. The State Fair is held in August in Springfield. YOUTH FAIR - Jefferson County Youth Fair will also award ribbons this year. 6
7 Ways for parents to help youth prepare for conference judging One of the best places to start is by asking your children if they understand why they did the steps and procedures they followed in their projects. Answer any questions they may have about their projects. Then practice a conference judging experience with your child by playing the role of judge. On the day of conference judging, parents can help their children feel comfortable with the judge by encouraging them prior to judging. Answering the judges questions for the children will not help your children feel more comfortable or help them learn more about the project. This is the 4-H ers chance to shine and be proud of their achievements. After judging, tell your children how proud you are of them. Focus on What did you learn? rather than what ribbon did you get? Question to ask your child in preparation for conference judging Get Acquainted Questions and Sharing: What is your name? How many years have you been in the project and 4-H? Tell me about your project. Why did you choose this idea/item as your exhibit? How did you make this exhibit? Processing Questions: What choices did you make when putting this exhibit together? What did you learn from mistakes you made? Or what would you do differently next time? What equipment or tools/materials or money did you use to prepare this exhibit? How much time, efforts, and skill did you use to prepare this exhibit? Where did you find the information to help you with project? Or where did you get the idea? Did anyone help you? What do you hope people notice about your project? Why is this a good birdhouse, garden box, etc.? How does it show originality? Generalize and Apply Questions: What was your favorite part of this project? What did you learn by preparing this exhibit? Have you ever done anything like this before? What have you made in this project before? What jobs/careers are possible in this project area? What do you plan to do next in this project area? Is there anything else about your project that you d like to tell me? Wrap Up from the Judge: Critiques and Comments From the Judge Positive Encouragement Thank You for Exhibiting Today it was very interesting and I learned something new! 7
