Bullard High School Twirler and Drum Major Tryout Information Packet
Bullard High School Panther Band Rules and Regulations for Majorette/Drum Major Tryouts Standards and Regulations: To tryout for the position of majorette for the Bullard High School Panther Band, a candidate must be a current member, in good standing, of the the Bullard ISD Band Program. To tryout for drum major or head twirler of the Bullard High School Panther Band, a candidate must have been a member of the Bullard High School Band for at least one year preceding the tryout. No special costumes or uniforms will be permitted. Candidates should wear black shorts and a solid color shirt that is fairly form fitting and does not interfere with the baton. Candidates must have written approval from their parents and must be eligible under current U.I.L. grade requirements. These forms are attached. Majorette Tryout Procedures: Majorettes for the Bullard High School Band will be selected from the candidates by the director of the Bullard High School Band. A head majorette may be selected at the discretion of the director. All decisions by the director will be final. There are four parts to the tryout process: I. Performance of scales from the ATSSB High School All-Region Scale sheet II. Demonstration of twirling fundamentals (list attached) III. Performance of group dance twirl IV. Performance of UIL solo In addition, proficiency on your band instrument, grades, conduct, attendance, teacher recommendations, and attitude will be factors in the director s decision.
Drum Major Tryout Procedures: The drum major of the Bullard High School Band will be selected from the candidates by the director of the Bullard High School Band. All decisions by the director are final. There are six parts to the audition process: I. Perform Scales from the ATSSB High School All-Region Scale sheet II. Vocal Commands III. Conducting IV. Each candidate will perform a prepared drum major routine-marching drill demonstrating such skills as:! A. Vocal commands! B. Whistle commands! C. Baton commands! D. Conducting! E. Marching Fundamentals V.! Spontaneous drill given by the director VI.! Questions by the director The position of drum major is open to both male and female students and may also serve as twirler or head twirler, but this is not a requirement. Proficiency on a band instrument, grades, conduct, attendance, attitude, and leadership are factors that will be important considerations in the director s decision.
Bullard High School Twirler Tryout Packet Responsibilities and Expectations You are expected to be a leader in the band, and as such you must give your instrument as much importance as your baton. You are expected to main U.I.L. grade requirements. You are responsible for contacting a twirling instructor to prepare for tryouts. You will demonstrate and be graded on your mastery of fundamentals as well as a group routine that will be taught by the sponsor prior to tryouts. Candidates for head twirler are required to do a solo as well as the group routine. You are responsible for all costs. Fundraisers will not pay the majority of the cost for being a twirler. Total cost is approximately $500-$900. Any additional band costs are outside of this. Upon being named twirler, you must pay $200 at tryouts. This is for uniform and partial camp expenses. $100 of this will go toward twirling camp downpayment. If you have already paid for camp, that money will go toward other twirling expenses. We practice throughout the summer and attend either SFA or Kilgore College Twirling Camp as well as a 4 day choreography camp here at the school with the sponsor. There is a 75$ camp fee that should be addressed to Jeri Coke prior to or, at the latest, on the first day of choreography camp. Tryouts are competitive. The judges decision is final. Bad sportsmanship is not tolerated. We practice 1-2 times per week after school once school begins. If you miss practice, you will not perform. The twirlers have a mandatory class period designated as a twirling class. This cuts down on extra outside practices. You are expected to attend regularly and dress out for practice. We perform at every pep rally and at home games. You are required to wear your hair, makeup, outfit/uniform in the exact manner decided by the sponsor. If you are missing any part of your uniform-including any bows, lipstick, etc., you will not perform. You are expected to be a model student in every aspect. Visits to ISS are not tolerated. If you are sent to ISS, or have a negative report such as disrespecting an authority figure, or in any way present yourself in less than a positive light, you will not perform. Your continued presence on the twirling line will also be placed under review. Teacher Evaluations, which will remain undisclosed, attendance, and eligibility will be considered when determining placement on the line.

Fulfill all financial responsibilities on time. 13. Attend all practices. 14. Not talk during practices while instructor is talking. 15. Commit myself to put the best interest of the twirling line before my personal interests. 16. Understand that if my performance is not satisfactory during the week-as determined by the instructor, I will lose my right to perform that week. 17.
