1 1 GORDON ISD CHEERLEADER CONSTITUTION PURPOSE: Students seeking the position of cheerleader at Gordon ISD should have uppermost in their minds to promote and uphold school spirit, to develop a sense of good sportsmanship among the students, and to build better relationships among schools during all phases of athletic events for the entire year. Anyone considering being a cheerleader would be expected to accept these ideals and conduct him or herself accordingly, since it is obviously a leadership role. Besides your academics, cheerleading must be a top priority. Students who earn the position Gordon Cheerleader take on a leadership role at Gordon ISD. The reputation of the team is a direct reflection on Gordon ISD. Therefore, the ideals and standards set in the constitution are high and will be enforced by coaches and with support of the administration. Membership: A. Eligibility Prior to Tryouts 1. Must be enrolled in Gordon ISD the grading period prior to tryouts, unless a student is an incoming 7 th grader from Palo Pinto. (If enrolled in Gordon ISD, must participate in pep squad to tryout for JH/HS cheerleading). 2. Passed all courses the grading period prior to tryouts. 3. Have a satisfactory citizenship grade in all classes prior to tryouts. 4. If a student has resigned or been dismissed from a GISD cheerleading or drill team squad, s/he will not be eligible to tryout. 5. If a student is serving a suspension from extra-curricular activities, s/he will not be eligible for tryouts. 6. Must attend clinics. 7. Candidates must have on file: a. Signed constitution B. Selection 7 & 8 eighth grade candidates will be chosen to create the Junior High squad. The Junior High squad will consist of 6 members. 9 th, 10 th, 11 th, 12 th grades will be chosen to create the high school squad. The High School will consist of 8 members and 1 mascot. Candidates will be evaluated by the following: A panel of qualified judges Student body vote Teacher evaluations **Process of selection of head cheerleader is determined by the coach/es.

2 2 C. Terms of Membership 1. Members must be able to attend scheduled practices during the summer (including cheer camp) and school year. 2. Members must be able to attend scheduled cheerleading events, including football games, parades, and any other school functions set forth by the sponsor. An event is considered mandatory if scheduled at least one week in advance. 3. Membership as a Cheerleader begins immediately after tryouts. Membership will continue throughout the next school year. D. Maintaining Eligibility 1. All members must maintain an average of 70 or better in each class each six weeks to be eligible to cheer. If a member has failed a class, he or she must still attend and participate in practice. 2. If a member fails for two consecutive six weeks, s/he will be dismissed from the squad. 3. Members must maintain a satisfactory citizenship grade in all classes. 4. Members must adhere to the duties and the disciplinary action in the Cheer Constitution. E. Attendance 1. Practice will be scheduled before and/or after school. Each member must be dressed out and in attendance for every practice. 2. If a member is present and does not have a doctor s excuse the member must dress out for practice. If the member has been ill and has a note from a parent/guardian, s/he must dress out and do a chore or light workout (walk) as specified by the sponsor. 3. Events and practices during the summer include but are not limited to: summer practices and cheer camp. 4. Each member will remain at practice until dismissed by the cheer coach. 5. Each member is to be present and in uniform at all cheerleading functions. If a member is on probation, s/he will dress out and sit with an advisor. 6. If a member is absent half of the school day or more on game days, unless there is prior approval, s/he will not be eligible to participate in the pep rally or game. However, if present at school on game day, s/he will be required to be present, dressed in uniform, and sit with the advisor. 7. Absence from any cheerleading function is considered unexcused except for personal illness, accident, funeral, death in the family, or prior approval. All decisions regarding prior approval will be at the coach s discretion. 8. If a cheerleader misses an event/function and this absence is considered unexcused, the cheerleader will sit out for the next game/event. 9. Members may not leave any function until officially dismissed by the cheer coach.

3 3 F. Parental Responsibilities 1. Parents must give their permission for their child to fulfill all the responsibilities of being a member. 2. Parents must meet all financial obligations including uniform accessories. 3. Parents are responsible for arranging transportation to all activities, unless the school provides transportation. Cheerleading Function Regulations Game Expectations 1. Each member is responsible for all his or her actions. Conduct must be appropriate at all times. 2. All members are to be completely dressed and ready to cheer fifteen minutes before a scheduled event. Any member not in designated uniform (top, skirt, bow, etc.) will sit out with an advisor until the correction is made. 4. Eat before or after games 5. Members are not allowed to carry on conversations with people in the stands. 6. Members need to pay attention to the game and know what is going on at all times. 7. Members need to go to the bathroom before the game starts and/or halftime. 8. No member may leave the field/court/stands without permission from the cheer coach. 9. Avoid extreme make up, dark nail polish, and extreme hair colors. 10. Keep nails short for safety reasons 11. Leave jewelry at home (not permitted at practice or games) 12. Display good sportsmanship at all times. 13. The cheer coach may utilize cuts if a member cannot perform routines/cheers or is not at practice. The cheer coach/sponsor is the only person with authority to implement cuts. 14. Members will stay after games and pick up sidelines and stands (fundraising). Squad Regulations and Expectations A. Each member is expected to courteously express his/her own opinion, listen to others, respect the minority, and accept the will of the majority or higher authority with sincerity, spirit, and trust. B. Any member that has an emergency on the day of a scheduled event causing them to miss the activity must notify the cheer coach prior to the event. C. Other engagements are not a valid excuse for an absence.

4 D. Tardies will result in demerits. E. No public display of affection will be allowed while in uniform. F. No jewelry will be worn during practice or games. G. Members may not leave practice or games without permission from an advisor. We will dismiss as a group. H. No gum chewing during practices or games. I. It is the member s responsibility to keep up with their schedules and information about what to wear and when to be somewhere. J. If a member is absent, it is the member s responsibility to contact another cheerleader to get information discussed at the missed practice. K. Members who are injured must attend practices and performances in support of their squad. L. Cell phones must remain on silent and kept in your bag during practice, games, and other cheer functions until the event is over. 4 Uniform and Equipment Regulations A. Members will buy uniform and accessories including but not limited to shoes, bows, and undergarments. B. All financial obligations must be met by the deadline given unless prior arrangements are made with an advisor. C. All payments must be made before the member receives the item being purchased. D. Members must wear designated uniform including top, skirt, bow, jacket, & undergarments, etc. E. Members must be completely dressed in uniform before entering the field or gym. F. Only warm-ups purchased by the squad may be worn in addition to the uniform. F. All uniforms are to be neat and clean. G. Megaphones and pom-poms will be purchased by GISD. Damages and losses will be the member s financial responsibility. H. Maintenance of uniforms and equipment is the responsibility of each member. I. No uniform is to be worn at any time other than scheduled events. J. Uniforms are not to be loaned out to anyone without permission from an advisor. K. Trading of uniforms will not be allowed without permission from a coach. L. Any school issued item not turned in at the end of the school year or following a resignation will become the financial responsibility of the squad member and/or his/her parent/guardian. (Final grades/ diplomas will not be issued until all items are turned in.)

5 5 FUNDRAISING: Members will be required to participate in team fundraising events as determined by the coach. These funds will go towards the team and be used for supplies for the year. The coach will also provide opportunities for individual fundraising events to help with costs for uniforms, camp, etc. These will be optional. Merits/Demerits MERITS Merits are given for conduct above and beyond the expectations of a cheerleader. Demerits earned under the Attendance and Tardies, and Performance Behavior can be canceled out by acquiring 5 merits for every 1 demerit. Merits cannot cancel demerits earned for misconduct. MERITS 3 - A/B Honor roll or above each six weeks 3 - Perfect attendance at school (all day, each class) for each six weeks 2 - Perfect attendance at all practices and performances each six weeks 1-5 -The sponsor may assign merits for special assignments, performances, and volunteering, etc. DEMERITS After 20 demerits have been received, a member is dismissed from the squad for the remainder of the school year. A. Attendance and Tardies 5 - Unexcused absence from a performance or activity. 4 -Unexcused absence from any practice. 3 - Unexcused tardy to any practice, performance, or activity. (more than five minutes) 2 - Detention for tardies in other classes. B. Performance Behavior 2 - Failure to wear the correct uniform or attire to a practice. 3 - Failure to wear the correct uniform or attire to a performance or activity. 3 - Lack of attention/participation during practice, performance, or activity (talking, laughing, and not standing at attention, etc.) 3 - Not learning and/or knowing cheers, chants, or dances 3 - Failure to return to the field/court on time after halftime 3 - Chewing gum while leading cheers, eating or primping on sidelines (this includes practice) 3 - Not following directions 3 - Using cell phone during practice, performance, or activity.

6 3 - Missing any part of the uniform (including shoes, poms, and megaphone) or wearing prohibited items (hair not up, no bow/wrong bow, wearing jewelry, wrong bra or pantyhose etc.) C. Misconduct 20 - Any conduct resulting in an arrest and conviction by law officials Any disciplinary action resulting in assignment to the district s Alternative Education Program Any disciplinary action resulting in suspension from school Inappropriate media (phone pictures/videos, myspace, facebook, etc.) 10 - Breaking the law. (MIP s, drinking alcohol or use of illegal drugs on or off school property, etc.) 5 - Any disciplinary action that results in assignment to I.S.S. (In School Suspension) 5 - Unlady like conduct at anytime (disrespect toward the coach, other cheerleader, or any other adult in a supervisory role). (In uniform or not) This includes inappropriate language. 3 - Any offense that results in a detention (other than tardies) 3 - Wearing uniform in public when not with the squad or sponsor without permission from sponsor. As a cheerleader accumulates Demerits, the following will occur: 3 Demerits Written Warning from cheer Sponsor 5 Demerits Parent notification, Physical conditioning. 10 Demerits Parent meeting and Suspension (Length to be determined by administration and Sponsor) and Physical conditioning. 20 Demerits Parent meeting and Removal from the Cheer Squad. Physical conditioning may also be assigned at anytime for any of the above. It can be individual or team conditioning. 6 Academic Eligibility: Gordon cheerleaders will be held to the UIL standards for academic eligibility. A cheerleader must maintain passing grades in all courses in order to be eligible to participate at games. If a cheerleader obtains a failing grade in any course for a 6 weeks period, they will be ineligible until the next progress report period, at which point they must obtain a passing grade in all courses in order to gain eligibility back. Probation A. Probation Considerations 1. Failure to comply with any regulation as stated in the handbook. 2. Member s action requiring disciplinary procedure or suspension by an administrator.

7 3. Six week average below Any member on disciplinary probation may not cheer/perform, but must uphold all other responsibilities. B. Disciplinary Probation Procedures 1. 1 st offense will result in suspension from cheerleading activities for one week, a conference with the member, and a written contact to parents nd offense will result in suspension from cheerleading activities for three weeks and a conference with member, an administrator, and a parent rd offense will result in dismissal. C. Disciplinary Probation can be given for the following reason but is not limited to: 1. Failure to follow school rules and policies 2. Assignment to ISS or after school detention 3. Skipping a class 4. Lack of respect towards an advisor, captain, faculty, and other school personnel (this can also lead to dismissal) 5. Buying, selling, or using illegal drugs, tobacco, or alcohol. D. Scholastic Probation 1. At the end of each six weeks grades will be checked. If any member receives a grade below 70 he or she will be on scholastic probation for three weeks. 2. Any member on scholastic probation will attend practice, but will be ineligible to cheer or participate in pep rallies. 3. If at the end of three weeks a member is passing, s/he will no longer be on probation. If the member is still failing s/he will continue probation. 4. If a member fails two consecutive six weeks he or she will be dismissed from the team. E. Probation for tobacco, alcohol, and drugs 1. Students who are members of this organization are not to buy, sell, possess, or use illegal drugs, alcohol, or tobacco at any time. Violation of this rule will result in suspension from all extra-curricular activities for the following periods of time: a. Tobacco/Alcohol 1 st offense- 3 week 2 nd offense 6 weeks 3 rd offense or more 1 calendar year b. Drugs - 1 st offense - 6 weeks 2 nd offense - 12 weeks 3 rd offense or more - 1 calendar year 2. Students suspended for less than six weeks may, at the discretion of the coach, be required to participate in practices with the squad until they are removed from the suspension. 3. Students are also subject to the provisions of the Student Code of Conduct and may receive disciplinary punishment to include a citation by law enforcement personnel, assignment to In School Suspension (ISS), out of school suspension, assignment to the DAEP or expulsion. Dismissals A. A member may be dismissed for the following reasons: 1. Lack of respect towards an advisor, captain, faculty, or school personnel 7

8 accumulated demerits in a year 3. Persistent misbehavior 4. Fighting 5. Theft 6. Any legal charge brought against a cheerleader 7. Pregnancy (due to health hazards) 8. Failure to attend cheer camp B. A member may also be dismissed for other causes determined by a coach or an administrator. Mandatory Drug Testing A. Any student in grades 7-12 who is a member of a campus organization that engages in extra-curricular activities shall be subject to the mandatory student drug-testing program. B. A copy of the mandatory drug testing policy will be given to each member of the squad. C. The portion that is to be signed and returned must be on file before a member will be eligible to participate. D. All procedures and consequences of the drug testing policy will be enforced. Social Media A. Never make a negative comment in person or via phone, text, online post or blog about or directed to a fellow squad member, team, fans, opposing team or cheer sponsor. B. Facebook pages are not allowed unless the cheer sponsor is the administrator. This is to avoid any miscommunication and/or misconduct.

9 9 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF CONSTITUTION This constitution was created as a guide for the expectations of cheerleaders at Gordon ISD. This document is not intended to be used as a tool against anyone or his/her beliefs, but instead to protect those who wish to do all they can to keep cheerleading the honorable position it should be. All decisions regarding discipline situations will be determined by the coach and supported by administration. Parents will be informed of disciplinary action in a scheduled conference. Please respect all decisions and understand actions are taken to benefit the cheerleaders and reputation of the Gordon Cheer Squad. Administrator Approval Cheer Coach Approval A student s signature signifies that he or she has read and understands the constitution and, if selected, will do his or her best to abide by these rules and expectations Student Signature Date Parents should understand that if their child is selected as a cheerleader or mascot, their help is vital to the organization s success. Participating with fundraisers, prompt payment on accounts, and support in following the guidelines set forth in this constitution are expected. Parents signatures signify that they have read and do understand the constitution and, if their child is selected, will do their best to support the organization and see that their child abides by these rules. Parent Signature Date SOCIAL NETWORKING AGREEMENT I,, do hereby agree to refrain from posting ANY comments or links on any social networking website, blog or other public forum that is a negative reflection on me, my teammates, coaches and/or the Gordon Cheerleading programs. This includes, but is not limited to: your personal or public Facebook account, My Space, You Tube or other similar site. Furthermore, I understand it is forbidden to post videos of cheers or performances unless given express permission from the Program Director. I understand, that any portrayal or photograph of me, posted on any public forum, that is in direct violation of the Gordon Code of Conduct and/or guidelines for Appropriate Behavior may result in immediate removal from the squad.
