5 Philosophy Goals of the Program PURE Dance is dedicated to providing exceptional dance training that has a strong technical focus. The Company and Crew programs are structured around creating well-rounded dancers in all disciplines of dance. Our goal is to develop strong technical dancers with skills that will promote self-confidence, selfesteem, dedication, commitment, teamwork, creativity and a love for the arts in a professional, competitive and performance oriented environment. Benefits to the Student Competition is a team building experience. It creates a sense of pride for the dancers, their teammates and the studio. Students who show strong technical skills and a dedicated interest are selected to join these teams through an audition process. Commitment to these programs substantially enhances the student's dance skills, social skills and confidence. The combination of team involvement, social interaction, weekly practice sessions and travel creates an enjoyable and rewarding experience for all students involved. PURE Academy 5
6 Primary Competitive, Company and Crew Programs at PURE Primary Competitive Dance Team The Primary Competitive Program is designed to be a stepping-stone for young students who think they may eventually become interested in competitive dance as an extracurricular activity. The goal is to take young focused children who already show a natural ability, a sincere focus, body awareness and a love for dance and allow them the opportunity to begin competitive training and performance at a young age. Students in the Primary Competitive Program are invited to audition separate from the rest of the competitive programs in a less intimidating environment. Teams travel to compete nationally 2-3 times each season. Competitive Company Dance Teams PURE Academy s award-winning Competitive Dance Teams are an incredible way for dancers to experience skill development at a very challenging level. Being on a competitive team drives personal achievement and perseverance and builds a strong sense of belonging. It acknowledges the strength of a student's skill, and recognizes their capacity to grow, pushing them to become highly skilled dancers and performers. Students must be accepted to the competitive program through an audition process. If this date is missed a private audition can be arranged (extra fees will apply). Competitive dancers train intensively for between 9 and 13 hours each week, depending on their age, concentrating on new skills development, improving technique, and choreography. Teams travel to compete Nationally and Internationally three to five times each season and attend a minimum of two intensive dance workshops while at competitions. This program requires a great deal of time and financial commitment from both the student and their family. Competitive Crew Dance Teams PURE Academy s award winning Competitive Crew Teams provides advanced group training through weekly classes in technique and choreography designed to develop strong dancers. A desire and drive to improve skills and to entertain, share, and cooperate with a team are what will make a student in this program feel at home. Students on the Competitive Crew Team will learn new skills and improve on technique but will concentrate a great deal on pulling it all together in stage-ready presentations. PURE Academy 6
7 Students must be accepted to the Competitive Crew program through an audition process that takes place on June 24 th, If this date is missed a private audition can be arranged (extra fees will apply). The time and financial commitment required from both the student and their family is high with training taking up 6 to 7 hours each week, plus extra rehearsals and events. Students will compete at the novice or pre-competitive level in three competitions each season providing the opportunity to perform in front of an audience and to see other studios perform as well. 27 Selected Numbers General Information and Description Select numbers are simply extra numbers that coaches provide for select groups of dancers. The coaches do the selection process. Select numbers carry added responsibility as well as added costs to the dancer. Please do not accept select numbers for your son or daughter if you are unable to afford to pay for them. In addition, if you feel that you are able to afford one select dance and not another, please let coaching staff know. Coaching staff will decide which dance your dancer will be taken out of in this case. Please note all selected routines that are choreographed by PURE s, Nicholas Eichenberger, will be rehearsed on Saturday s at the studio. Company Teams Improvisation Category This year some of PURE s Company dancers will be provided the opportunity to participate in improv routines at some of the competitions PURE will attend. Company dancers that choose to participate in the improv category will agree to paying an extra entry fee for that particular competition and will commit to attending an hour-long rehearsal on the Friday rehearsal before competition weekend. Company dancers deemed ready for improv routines will be ed before registering for these competitions and asked if they would like to participate. No costume will need to be purchased for these routines. Alumni Company dancers will be welcomed back to participate in said routines (as long as they meet age requirements). Alumni dancers must participate in the hour-long practice held at PURE the Friday before competition weekend. PURE Academy 27
28 Solos, Duos and Trios General Information and Description The opportunity to learn a solo, duo or trio number is an honor for the student. This type of number showcases the readiness of a student s talent, stage presence and confidence, but risks overshadowing the importance of their group numbers. Coaches make this opportunity available to all Intermediate/Teen/Senior dancers. Students are asked to request a solo; whether their request will be granted, is up to the coach s discretion. This decision is based on several factors including, but not limited to: readiness, previous classroom behaviors, number of applicants, etc. The financial and time commitment is great and lasts for a full season. We want the dancer and the dancer s family to be fully aware of all that is expected so that, if a dancer is approached, or a dancer s request is approved, the family can make an informed decision whether to proceed. Solos duos and trios are treated as extra numbers on top of core dances/productions and possibly selected dances; therefore, they take less precedence and are of less importance than these other team dances. After you and your dancer receive the schedule of dances they are asked to participate in for the year, you may consider whether or not you would like to request a solo. Requests to be taken out of core team dances in order to be able to afford a solo will not be granted. If your dancer needs guidance as to whether or not a solo is a good decision for them, please talk to one of the competitive coaches. Competing and Performing Please note that solos will not be included in the dress rehearsal at the Capitol Theatre with the rest of the competitive dances. A solo rehearsal will be set up closer to the first competition date. Each family will be charged the appropriate fee to cover the cost of the venue rental. This decision is based on time constraints. Dancers are not guaranteed to compete at all competitions. Whether they compete is determined by the progress of the routine, and the dancer s readiness. An assessment will be made before registration for each competition. PURE Academy 28

39 Parent Committee Each year PURE will have a parent committee that handles certain aspects of the competitive and recreational programs at PURE. Purpose The purpose of the Parents Committee is to foster communication between parents and PURE management, coaches and teachers. We also want to improve the PURE experience for parents and students, and a key part of this is to increase communication within the parent community partly to inform program direction, and partly to remove any barriers between programs and between parents. We are all at PURE to provide the best experience we can for our children working together we can make that experience even better. As the committee is new, we don t pretend to have all the answers we will be asking all parents to contribute ideas, and we will be coordinating parents to volunteer onto committees and projects to make things run smoother, faster (and maybe cheaper as well). What we want to do is be a sounding board for new ideas, help deal with nagging issues and complaints and bring up issues of importance directly to those who need to hear. Hopefully, this provides the avenue for issues to be resolved, and provides clear direction for decision-making. We might not have all the answers right now, but what we can promise is that parents will have the opportunity to discuss issues directly with other parents - and we will help in dealing with issues and working toward positive solutions. We are honestly interested in getting everyone involved parents from all program streams (Recreation, Company, Crew, Creative Arts) and the Parent Committee will only work if we can hear from everyone. PURE Academy 39

43 General Policies All policies recorded in this document apply to all students who become a part of the Competitive Company, or the Competitive Crew teams, no matter what level they are in. Families are also held to these policies, as well as the PURE Academy staff. Please familiarize yourself and your child with the information contained so that you, together, can be confident in your ability to commit to the requirements of entering the program, and program participation. Intensive Dance Camp Training The Intensive Dance Camps are scheduled to be held in August are mandatory for Competitive Company Team and Competitive Crew Team students. Specific dates and times of the camps are described with each program outline in this document. For Company Teams, all team choreography will be learned, and for Crew some team choreography will be learned. Early learning of choreography will give all our teams a fantastic edge during competition season having many additional hours to clean, polish and perfect their dances. For everyone, it gives an exceptional opportunity to focus, with greater concentration, on technique study throughout the season. *Competitive Company team members will receive 35 hours of training. Most of the training will be received on the scheduled intensive week, but some may be made up in the first week of September due to availability of choreographers. Dress Code A dress code creates an environment of equality, uniformity, discipline and consistency. It also allows the teacher to easily view the dancer's body for proper alignment. Strict Ballet dress code will be enforced to ensure a professional level of conduct in all Ballet classes. All other classes have the requirement of form fitted dancewear and hair neatly secured in a bun or ponytail with bangs off the face. A student may not wear anything different or additional to the specified dress code. Only articles that adhere to the dress codes for each discipline will be permitted. All students must strictly adhere to dress code expectations including removal of jewelry before the start of each class. If a dancer attends class unprepared, a warning will be issued. After three warnings, a student will be removed from that class, and it will count as an absence. Dress codes are generally described with each program outline in this document, and can be found our website PURE Academy 43
44 Absences Attendance in a team sport is a critical component to the success of the team. When students miss class, the entire team is held back. PURE would like to stress that commitment to a Dance Team requires excellent attendance. Attendance is recorded meticulously at PURE. Class schedules are optimized to make consistent attendance achievable. Rehearsals and cleaning of numbers, and the two weeks leading up to competitions requires all team members to be in attendance. We understand that sometimes an absence cannot be avoided or that family vacations and other important events come up from time to time. We want to work with you to arrive at an action plan that minimizes the effect an absence has on the dancer and on the rest of the team. Please one of the coaches directly when requesting an absence. Illness and injury are unavoidable, so we simply ask that parents notify PURE as soon as possible if your son/daughter is ill or injured. Private lessons may be required if your student falls behind. In the case of extended absences due to illness or injury, these must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Company/Crew coaches, in consultation with the dancer, his/her parents and PURE management, will determine continuation in the program. Important Notes on Absences: To be excused for a planned absence you must a Company/Crew coach at least two weeks in advance. Students are allowed three excused absences (excluding injury). If the student is ill or injured and the illness is in a noninfectious state, then we ask that the student attend class to take notes and be with the team. Above all, if you have any questions or concerns about your student s absences, it is important to find time to meet with the team coach to discuss your concerns, and determine the best course of action. Communication is key in fulfilling the absence policy. Illness and Injury Prolonged illness and injury that prevents the dancer from training will require adjustment of the dancers Competitive schedule. Several factors come into consideration regarding each specific case. If the Artistic Director feels that the dancers should be removed from competitive pieces in order to prevent further injury, they may do so. Please note that dances that impact the team as a whole the most, will be pulled first (ex. solos, duos, trios, selects). PURE Academy 44
45 Classroom Etiquette Be respectful to your instructors and choreographers Bring a positive, professional and respectful attitude to every class Never talk back to instructors or choreographers Listen quietly and attentively to instructors and choreographers during class instruction Always give 100% in the classroom Be punctual Go to the washroom in between classes No chewing gum Adhere to the dress code set forth for each class Always stand unless asked to sit Always be gracious and polite when corrections are given and apply them to the best of your ability Call the office when you are sick or injured to notify us that you ll be missing class Say thank-you at the end of every class Representation and Image Team members will behave in an appropriate, respectful manner, whether it is at the studio or in the community where they will be representing their teammates, coaches and PURE Academy. This includes being respectful of other studios and their students and never taking a negative attitude with fellow dancers, parents or teachers, or speaking negatively about them. We take this very seriously and inappropriate behavior in the classroom, or outside in the community, could result in dismissal from the program. Community Performances Dance Teams will have opportunities to perform in local events such as charities and festivals throughout the year. All dancers must participate in these events. Extra Rehearsals Students should be aware that extra rehearsals are set when pieces are not quite competition ready. PURE promises to give plenty of notice, but these rehearsals are mandatory and cannot be excused. Thursday and Friday Before Competition Weekends Please note that due to prolonged competition weekends, Thursdays and Fridays at the studio may be cancelled the week of competition. PURE will notify you the week before competition regarding whether classes will be cancelled. PURE Academy 45
