1 THE ANCHOR ISSUE 8 Be Smart and Buckle Up! By: Jacolby Doss & Shanna Jackson During our four years at high school, most of us have taken our driving tests, received our permits and license, and eventually given the freedom to drive alone. With this newfound freedom, it is important to understand the seriousness of our privilege. Being able to transport ourselves around is exactly that; a privilege. Just because your car can break the sound barrier at a head spinning pace, doesn t mean you should. The roads and highways we travel can be dangerous places. It is not only yourself you have to think of, it is everyone else on the roads as well. You must be vigilante and observant of others around you. One of the most important things to remember when behind the wheel of a car is that seat belt s save lives. It is important for yourself to strap in, as well as anyone else who may be riding with you. When you have passengers with you, their safety is your responsibility as their driver. If an accident were to occur, and they have sustained serious physical injury because they weren t wearing a seatbelt, you would be left knowing you could have changed things if you would have made them buckle up. Finally, when it seems like the police are around every street corner, why risk having to pay a fine because you were being a negligent driving by speeding, texting and driving, or not wearing a seat belt. It is not only unsafe to do those things, but it can also be a hassle that could eventually turn into a legal mess. Be safe, avoid hassles, and save money by being a smart driver: It s worth it in every way. Announcements November 6: Election Day (NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS; Teachers report for Professional Day) November 22-23: Thanksgiving Break (NO SCHOOL) December 19: Last day of school before Christmas Break begins December 20-January 1: Christmas Break ACT Dates December 8 registration deadline: November 2 *ACT No Writing Fee: $35 *ACT Plus Writing Fee: $50 Yearbook will be sold October 1st - November 9th $ checks can be made out to RUSSELL COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL YEAR- BOOK (this includes your name on the front) **will be sold during 1st block on Wednesdays and Fridays -- sold during lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays -- form must be turned in with payment!

2 Clubs World Language Club Our annual field trip to Shoguns in Bowling Green is scheduled for November 1st. All Club members attending need to have a permission form signed and turned into Mrs. Palacky. Non-Club members can attend for a fee of $10. We are currently doing a pasta fund raiser to raise money for our annual trip to Dollywood in the spring. HOSA HOSA is having a teddy bear event! They are set up to go to Headstart pre-k-1st grade! They will bring their favorite teddy bear and baby doll, dress as pros, and do a check up on their toys. They will fix boo-boos and help keep kids from being scared of doctors on November 5th! Service projects: - Y-Club bake sale, November 3rd -Art club natatorium expo- November 3rd

3 Laker Band Going to State? The Russell County Laker band travels to Allen County Scottsville Saturday October 27 to determine whether or not they will advance to the state band competition at Western Kentucky University later that night. The laker band must finish in the top 4 in class 3A in order to advance. This year our laker band is trying to make history by making it to state back to back years for the 1st time in school history. Last year the laker band finished 3rd overall in the state placing behind runner up Bourbon County and the state champs Adair County. The lakers are hopeing to accomplish what they did in 2003 when they won the state championship. Laker band director Curtis Irvin says that there isnt much difference in the way we practice, practice is just longer because I need to know I am going to get consistency. Lets all hope this Saturday our laker band can bring a state championship to RCHS!

Eastern Kentucky University is off the second exit into Richmond on I-75. There are about 16,000 Colonels right now. It actually started as a Teacher Training University and it shut down years later because the other big state schools were offering a lot more majors and choices The doors re-opened in 1906 and became Eastern Kentucky University. Right now the education program is Eas ern s best program but they have many more paths to offe they have one of the best criminal justice programs in the Nation (top 5). When it comes to classrooms their student to professor ratio is about They are a very competitive school when it comes to athletics. Their football team has won multiple conference championships along with a few playoff appearances and national championship.

5 Student Profiles Ladera Garr: Q: What are your plans outside of high school? A: I would like to be an actress, if I can get there. Q: What is your favorite movie? A: I love the Madea movies, especially Madea s Witness Protection movie. Q: What is your favorite class this year? A: Art! I love Mrs. DeVore! Jared Russell Q: What is your favorite thing about being in the dock? A: We get to buy lots of drinks. Q: Who is your favorite teacher and why? A: I really like Mr. Reed because his class is easy and he is a nice guy. Q: What kind of activities are you interested in? A: I love to play basketball. It is my favorite sport. Sidney Nivens: Q: Do you believe in ghosts? A: No! Q: What are your Halloween plans? A: I m not sure, but I usually pass out candy at my grandma s. Q: What s your favorite thing about fall? A: I like the scenery because the leaves change colors. Daniel Hadley Q: What do you like to do outside of school? A: I enjoy fishing and hunting. Q: Do you have preference of hunting with a bow or gun? A: I enjoy both, but I prefer hunting with guns. My favorite gun is a 243. Q: What is your favorite part about fall? A: Deer hunting season!

Mr. Bridgeman: Being able to be part of the lives of so many people. 2. What is a hobby of yours? Mrs. Darnell: Being with family and Pinterest. Mr. Bridgeman: University of Kentucky 5. What is your favorite food in the school cafeteria? Mrs. Darnell: Everything except wheat noodles! Mr. Bridgeman: Definitely the napkins. By far! Of course with chicken strips coming in a close second place. 6. How long have you been teaching? Mrs. Darnell: 13 years Mr. Bridgeman: Playing Music 3. What is the most unusual thing you ve seen inside the school? Mrs. Darnell: A life size sperm and egg Halloween Costumes (Best Ever) Mr. Bridgeman: A pack of wild avatars running loose through the school (Costume Day) 4. Where did you go to college at? Mrs. Darnell: Lindsey Wilson College and Western Kentucky University Mr. Bridgeman: This is my 1st year. What are some benefits of your job? Mrs. Darnell: Getting to control my own thermostat, No dull moments, Lots of laughs, Daily blessings as I interact with students, Meeting over 200 new people each year, and having weekends and the summers off--family Time! Mr. Bridgeman: Teaching in the place I grew up, Teaching with teachers that taught me, and competing against other teachers in awesome pep-rally games!

8 FOOTBALL LAKERS 6th District BY: BRANDON ROARK & ZAC OAKES Lakers District CHAMPS!!! Last Friday on October 19, the Russell County Lakers traveled to Knox Central to play the district championship game. The Mighty Lakers pulled away with a big WIN Russell Co 35 Knox Central 19. This is a big thing for the Mighty Lakers; it has been almost 19 years since Russell County has been district champs. Being district champs means that Russell County will be 1st seed in the playoff which the first playoff game will be played at home if Lakers continue to when in the playoffs they will have 2 additional home games. The Russell County Lakers are now 9-0 and will be playing this Friday October 26, against Adair County Indians. The Lakers have high hopes this year of being the 1st team in school history to win the state championship. The Lakers want everyone to come out on Senior Night and support them against rival Adair County Indians also throughout the season.
