1 March 2016 FCCLA Chapter Receives Gold Scores at District Meeting On Wednesday, January 27 th the 22 members of the Corsica-Stickney FCCLA Chapter traveled to Mitchell, SD to compete and attend District Meeting. Corsica-Stickney members started the meeting by singing the National Anthem. Several students competed in STAR Event competitions. STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation. At District Meeting Job Interview, Career Investigation, and Illustrated Talk STAR Events are presented to a panel of judges using a specific, detailed scoring rubric. These competitors must receive a gold rating at District Meeting in order to advance to State Meeting. Corsica-Stickney received all gold rating for their STAR Events at District Meeting. Results include: Brittany Bamberg Gold Job interview on Certified Nursing Assistant Alyee Weerheim Gold Career Investigation on Early Childhood Educator Heather Johnson, Haley Johnson & Alecia Beigh Gold Illustrated Talk on Child Abuse Bridget Burke & Courtney Menning Gold Illustrated Talk on Divorce Haley Keizer & Hannah Matzner Gold Illustrated Talk on Sibling Rivalry Josh Gerlach & Kyle Menning Gold Illustrated Talk on Sports Concussions Alyssa Lau & Brooke Wieczorek Gold Illustrate Talk on Human Trafficking These members along with other Corsica-Stickney FCCLA members will travel to Sioux Falls in April to complete at the State level. Other members who attended district meeting but did not complete include: Keeley Rexwinkel, Clayton Menning, Josh Moser, Hunter Johnson, Gavin Zomer, Landon DeBoer, Jacob Joachim, Cameo Irwin, and Candice Knudson. Congratulations to Cameo Irwin who will serve as the District 5 Treasurer for the school year! ****************************************************************************** The following fall extra-curriculars achieved a GPA of 3.0 earning them an Academic Team Award: Volleyball Team Football Team Oral Interpretation All-State Chorus Football Cheerleaders

8 Corsica/Stickney Elementary Receives Honor Corsica/Stickney Elementary was selected as a 2016 National Title I Distinguished School and was honored during the 2016 National Title I Conference in Houston, TX held January 28 th -30 th in Houston TX. Representing Corsica/Stickney Elementary were Principal Kemp and Title I Director Gillette. C/S Elementary was selected by the SD Dept. of Education for its outstanding student performance for two or more years. ***************************************************************************************************** Free Throw Championship Winners The area Knights of Columbus sponsored a Free Throw Championship for the local Ray Harrington Council located in Armour. Participants were separated by age and gender per level at each local school. The local Corsica/Stickney winners are pictured below. L to R: Rachel Gerlach 12yr-Girls Casey Tolsma 11yr-Girls Bailey Dykstra 10yr-Girs Tyson Wentland 9yr-Boys L to R: Dayna Koch 13yr-Girls Caleb Krogstad 13yr-Boys Cooper DeLange 14yr-Boys Hayden Plamp 12yr-Boys These winners went on to the next level, District #12 in Wagner on February 7 th, where Rachel, Casey, Tyson, Caleb, Hayden & Cooper each received a medal.
9 One Acts Bring Laughter to C/S On Thursday, January 28 the Corsica-Stickney drama department took their comedic one act play, The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon, to the Pepsi-Cola Theatre in Mitchell. The One Act play festival hosts seven different schools. Three judges attend all of the plays in the same day. Each judge is asked to rank the plays first through fifth with everything after fifth being a sixth place ranking. Then they use a matrix to figure out which two of the seven plays will move on to the state festival which is held in Sioux Falls on February 4-6. The cast and crew did a wonderful job on their performance and received two second place finishes and a sixth place finish. This did not qualify them for state but they ended the season with a fourth place finish. The judges also have the opportunity to give out Outstanding Actor awards to students who exemplify great acting. Two Corsica-Stickney students were given this award, seniors Alec Burns and Daisy Van Genderen. All the students did a fantastic job and should all be very proud of the work they did Daisy as Cinderella 2-Sam and Haley kept things moving along as the narrators 3-Alec as everyone in the play!! 4-Alec and Keeley in Rumpelstiltskin 5- Jacob and Cameo trapped in a cage as Hansel & Gretel 6-Sam, Alec, & Haley discuss Disney copyright 7-Jacob suffers an unfortunate death as Hansel 7
10 1 2 1-Alec as the birds and Daisy as Cinderella 2-Alec and Daisy in Cinderella 3-Alec and Collin in the Devil s Grandmother ********************************************************************** This year s noncompetitive play was 13 Ways to Screw Up Your College Interview. In this fast pace comedy, two interviewers try to get one more student enrolled so they meet their quota and keep their jobs. This sounds like a job that should be easy enough but when you have to go to the wait listed kids things can get interesting. From practicing vampires to practicing magicians these crazy characters kept the interviewers on their toes. ************************************************** Alyee & Josh 2-Keeley 3-Alyssa 4-Kassidy 5-Hannah & Sam 6-Alyee & Abby 7-Hannah & Josh
