1 OCEAN LAKES HIGH SCHOOL PTSA Executive Board Meeting November 9, 2015 The November board meeting was called to order in the Dolphin Conference Room at 6:05 pm by President Those in attendance were:, Lisa Burris, Jill Burley, Jamie Ridgway, Louise Honig, Kiersten Honig, Missy Dunaway, Cindy Lowery, Meredith Glenn, Krystal Cruz, Pam Wiltshire, Cheryl Askew, Ellie Zucchini, Gretchen Kundra, Melissa Pieczynsi, Kathryn Schweers, and Penny Grant. Invocation Pam Wiltshire Pam read a reading entitled A Thanksgiving Message Adoption of Agenda The agenda was adopted as submitted. Approval of Minutes Lisa Burris The minutes from the Oct. 12 board meeting were presented. There were no corrections or concerns and were approved. Reports Senior Class Ashley Burris Senior class had a successful homecoming with 1st place in Hallway decorations, and Powderpuff football. We took second place in boys dance. They are currently selling senior class t-shirts and lanyards with a chance for students to win a free prom ticket. They are looking to do another Cashola soon, as well. Freshman Class Ryan Newman Participated in Fall Festival and over 15 students turned out to help with the table set up and man the table during the event. It was very successful as we went through 500 pieces of candy. The next Freshman Class meeting is scheduled for November 18th. The goal of this meeting is to plan a holiday get to know one another social and to brainstorm two fundraising activities. It has also been brought to the class' attention that many students would like to explore some volunteer opportunities that are available to the class. They want to give back to the community. Sophomore Class No Representative Junior Class Krystal Cruz Juniors noted a great homecoming week with hallway decorating and powderpuff. The girls came in second and boys first in dance. The class also participated in Fall Fest. They are having a Barnes and Nobel gift wrapping fundraiser at the Lynnhaven Mall location on December :30pm and again on 12/19 from 11a-3:30pm. The class is also planning for Ring Assembly and Ring Dance.

2 SCA Krystal Cruz The SCA completed a student exchange with Princess Anne High School, as well as Fall Fest and the United Way campaign. They also reported the completion of the Battle of the Cans with 3375 cans collected. They are gearing up for winter season with planning of the Dolphin Plunge, Mr OL and middle school leadership workshop. In addition, they have started Thankful Turkeys for teachers during lunches and will continue through the end of the month. It also was noted that the Sweet Frogs Cashola was passed along from the PTSA board as we can t promote one business and the class had the event last month. Corresponding Secretary Pam Wiltshire There was a thank you note from Ann Marie Garvey, Asst. Dir. Student Programs ATC, for the opportunity to speak and the token of appreciation. Treasurer Missy Dunaway Missy presented the treasurer s report. See attached. President s Report Knowledge of Power Information Night, Nov 5, was a success due the efforts of Jill Burley, 1 st VP & volunteers parents & presenters. Lisa expressed on behalf of the board appreciation to Jill. Exemplary Award Checklist is on track. Lisa expressed appreciation to membership & the treasurer for following through on important deadlines. Lisa noted that we received our renewed 501(c)(3) determination letter for non-profit status. (7:00 p.m. Dolphin Conf. Room) Principal Dr. Askew The MSA Lecture Series began the school year on October 13 with a panel of graduates who spoke to our students about research. The second in the series is this evening with Dr. Robert Malkin on the topic, Making a Difference through Engineering. The PSAT was given to all 9 th, 10 th and 11 th grade students on October 14. Mrs. Tasha Hurst was honored as our Teacher of the Year at a citywide event on October 15 at the Westin Hotel. Homecoming week was held October with our all-school spirit assembly being held on Friday, October 16 and the homecoming dance on Saturday, October 17.

3 The fall chorus concert was held on October 27 and the orchestra concert was held on October 29. Both concerts were outstanding. The band concert will be held on November 18. The National Honor Society held senior inductions on October 29. Fall Festival was held on October 28 and was a great success. We had a student exchange with Princess Anne High School on October 29 and 30. It was a very productive exchange of ideas. The end of the first grading period was November 2 with report cards to be distributed tomorrow. 1,101 students achieved Honor Roll status and 89 are on the Principal s List. This combined academic achievement represents approximately 56% of our student body. Levonta Taylor has been selected to attend the Under Armor All-American game. His jersey presentation was held on Thursday, November 5 in the auditorium. Del. Glenn Davis visited Ocean Lakes on Friday, November 6. He was taken on a student-led tour and visited several classrooms. Loranika and Varanika Sharma were honored by the Teens With a Purpose Youth Organization at their annual Gala at the Norfolk Marriott on Saturday, November 7. We had several students and staff members who volunteered this past weekend with the Special Olympics program that was held in our building. Our theatre department will present its fall play, Othello this Friday/Saturday and next Saturday. Performances begin at 7 p.m. Fall activity programs have done well with the following accomplishments: o The competition cheer squad placed 5 th in the district and 4 th in the conference. o Field hockey finished 4 th in the conference. o The girls volleyball team placed 2 nd in the conference. o The boys volleyball team was 1 st in the conference and they continue in state tournament play with the state semi-final next Tuesday. o The boys cross country team finished 2 nd in the conference o The girls cross country team finished 1 st in the conference and 1 st in the region. This is their 11 th straight conference title and 8 th straight region title. They will compete in the state meet this Friday o The football team ended the regular season with a perfect record. 4 Reflections Ellie Zecchini We had 38 Entries in the Reflections Program. Most of the judging is complete. We will be delivering the first place entries into Citywide competition on Thursday at the VBPTSA Roundtable Meeting. OLHS Awards Ceremony is set for Dec 17 during the Winter Band Concert. Winners will be announced next week! Programs Jill Burley Last week we held the Knowledge is Power program Approximately 100 attendees with expenses of $412 VoTec and Scholarship Sharing were the two highest attended sessions The comment cards were all positive with one exception of the Navy recruiter who did not attend. This was a new approach where we combined the topics for all grade levels. Requested the scholarship session slide deck to post on our website excellent topic and speaker Staff Appreciation Meg Turley Goodie bags for the bus drivers for November 18th. Seeking 2 volunteers to help deliver them in the afternoon starting at 2pm. There are goodie bags for the 4 permanent substitutes for their day on the 19th. If anyone can volunteer, please reach out to her otherwise, we will send out to the membership a request. Lisa noted that we will be spreading out throughout the year these appreciation gestures. Membership Crystal Rendon Gretchen gave this month s report. Current numbers are: o 1221 members to day which is well over last year's total o We've reached 90% staff membership o Victoria Ballarin was our $25 gift card winner and we have had 3 drawings so far this year. Gradfest Cindy Lowery In selecting this year's main entertainment contract for Gradfest 2016, 4 local businesses were considered: Amazing Entertainment, Big Top Entertainment, Special Events, & Birdies. After comparing like items/services, this year's contract is being awarded to Amazing Entertainment who has worked with us in the past (photo booth.) The contract will be signed this month. Community Partners Jeanna Sheridan We are currently enrolled in Amazon Smile program. They do not have a way for us to track or monitor our points (at this time, but I hope this changes in the future!) But each quarter the AmazonSmile Foundation makes donations to registered charitable organizations by electronic funds transfer. Donations are generally transferred approximately 45 days after the end of each calendar quarter. Current points so far with Farm Fresh 1234 program: 44,878 (which is enough to get 1 or 2 printers for Grad Fest gifts)

5 Target Together In Education (which is ending May 2016): The most recent Target donation to this school (February 2015): Total of all Target donations to this school through February 2015: Amount accumulated toward the next Target donation:* Number of REDcard holders who have designated this school: 136 Harris Teeter: School Year Earnings Participants $ VIE Kim Craft We have filled volunteer requests this month for several needs including the Homecoming Dance, library, Reality Store, and the Othello performance which is coming up this week. A copy has been received of the total hours logged for OLHS thus far, and the report is incorrect. Please continue to log in hours with the link that was sent and Kim is working to figure out the error. There was discussion about the laptop for volunteers to use and log in hours at school. Dr. Askew noted the laptop had arrived but was not pleased with the laptop performance and has asked her staff to see if there is a better solution. Unfinished Business There was no unfinished business. New Business Fundraising on track. Programs/Project Budget: $ Founders Workshop Session: $700 = $6700 total Program Expenses To-Date: Knowledge is Power, approximately $412 Voted to fund Founders Week (Feb 22-26) motivational, keynote speaker Patrick Maurer from California (speaker, educator, & entertainer.) The school grant that usually covers this expense has expired. Cost $ 2,750. This expense is in addition to the workshop session we normally fund.
