CAPTION WRITING Journalism 1
HOW TO WRITE A SOLID CAPTION Good captions don t just tell what s going on in the photo, the act as their own mini-stories.
1. Action sentence: Tells what happens in the photo. *This is present tense, identifies everyone in the photo and tells what they are doing. *This sentence does not begin with a name.
2. Background sentence: Tells info that is not apparent in the photo. *It is written in the past tense and may tell what happened before or after the photo.
3. Quote: Relates the topic of the caption. It may be from someone not pictured in the photo. This is a good way to get more people in the yearbook.
Info: Student: Salat Jones, SR At the Dowling game First game of the season at East on Sept. 1 Final score 19-3 Dowling First day of tailgating Quote from another student at the tailgate: It was nice to finally be able to de-stress after the first week of school. Even though we lost, it was still a good way to end the week, Sydney Hall said.
EXAMPLE: Scarlet Pride. Adorned in a head dress, 2012 graduate Salat Jones takes in the atmosphere at the first tailgate of the season on Sept. 1. The Scarlet football team came up short that night in a 19-3 loss to Dowling. Even though we lost, it was still a good way to end the week, senior Sydney Hall said. photo/ Haley Larson

WRITE A CAPTION FOR THIS PHOTO Alumni Connor Enochs and Jaylin James (1) State baseball quarter finals at Principal Park on July 29. Scarlets lost, 11-3 to Iowa City West after leading 2-0 early in the game. East was back at State after a year hiatus. Upset Johnston to make it to state. Getting back to state was a great feeling, Enochs said.
EAST STUDENTS ON FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, WEDNESDAY AUG. 26, AT WILLIAMS STADIUM. FIELD DAY. STUDENTS CHOSE FROM KICKBALL, BAGS, A DUNK TANK, MAGIC SHOW AND SUPER SIZED JENGA. THE EVENT WAS TO KICK OFF ANOTHER YEAR OF THE BE EAST PROGRAM AND CELEBRATE A NEW YEAR. WE ARE SO EXCITED FOR THE CHANGES THAT ARE HAPPENING AT EAST THIS YEAR. GREAT THINGS ARE COMING, PRINCIPAL LESLIE MORRIS SAID.
Write a caption for this photo -captions in present tense -include a quote if possible Information Science teacher Randy Nordaker Nov. 6 in his classroom, where The Journey is hosted. 4 types of pancakes offered + juice The Journey is on Tuesday mornings from 7-7:35. Over 100 students attend. Nordaker- East for 20 years. The Journey is a great opportunity for all students to learn about God and themselves.
MR. LYLE FEDDERS AT WILLIAMS STADIUM. HE S THE AD AT EAST. TOOK OVER FOR RIC POWELL THREE YEARS AGO. FORMER SIL AT EAST. HIS BEST MEMORY AS AD SO FAR: STATE BASEBALL IN THE SUMMER OF 2013, SCARLETS ADVANCED TO THE SEMI- FINAL GAME. I love East and I love sports. This was the perfect job for me, Fedders said.
SIL Boston Freilinger and counselor Ashlee Dimstrua Dancing in the Homecoming assembly. Assembly was on Oct. 9 in the gym. Dancing to the song Kung Fu Fighting Dance off between students and staff Performances by cheerleaders, drumline, color guard, band and steppers. I am an amazing dancer, the students didn t know what they were getting themselves into, Freilinger said.
Photo/ E. Kinney Sophomore Taryn Anderson Competing in the National Honor Society sponsored dodge ball tournament. Held in the main gym on Friday, April 1. Eight teams competed. Tournament was held during block 4 and each block had to donate $10 to attend. Over $700 was raised for the Ronald McDonald House. This event was really successful, we will definitely be doing it again next year, NHS sponsor Mr. Hoversten said.
Sophomore Tyler Willitis working during block 4 Woodshop class. He has been in Tech Ed for 1 year. They are currently building cabinets and working on a project for Ms. Morris. Students wear safety goggles and have to learn about the saws before they get started. I took woodshop because I wanted to learn skills that I couldn t learn anywhere else.
FEATURE STORY ABOUT THE PRESSURES OF PERFORMING AT A HIGH LEVEL AS AN ATHLETE Running the hurdles at the Iowa State Co- Ed track meet on May 21 is East senior Dimetrea Hamilton. Like many student athletes, Hamilton has to balance her studies with track and having a job. It s tough but you have no choice, you have to figure it out, Hamilton said.

Tiana Ziegler/11being chased by Melynn Phillips/10 Homecoming Powder Puff game on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Williams Stadium Ziegler led her team in rushing yards Seniors won the championship, defeating the sophomores I haven t seen competition this fierce in a few years, these athletes came to play, referee Mr. Lowell Long said.
