1CARLSBAD DANCE CENTRE AUDITION INFORMATION Please read this entire document carefully so you fully understand the commitments to the Competition Team prior to participating in the auditions. Competition Team auditions will be held Saturday, September 13 th, Specific audition times are listed on the audition application for your dancer s age group and/or level. The application must be filled out in its entirety prior to auditions. Please complete page #2 of the application also. There will be a $16.00 fee per student, per audition class. Please note that Lyrical auditions will take place with the Jazz auditions. Applications and fees are due by Tuesday, September 9 th at 7:00 pm. Make checks payable to the Carlsbad Dance Centre and submit your forms & fees to the studio office. If you would prefer to use a credit card for audition fees, you must have one on file in your parent portal. The card will be charged upon processing your form. We ask that dancers adhere to the following dress code for auditions: Jazz/Lyrical/Tap tights, leotard, bootie shorts, hair pulled back off of face No jeans, baggy pants, skirts or skorts in Jazz/Tap audition Hip-Hop comfy clothes (Baggy is great!), tennis shoes (no black soles), hair pulled back off of face During auditions dancers will perform combinations they learned from the Intensive Workshop. Mini s will learn their audition piece in their Mini Tap class. Dancers will perform in small groups for a panel of judges (CDC Competition Teachers) Many factors are considered when selecting students for the Competition Team (i.e. technical skills, stage presence, performance quality, ability to pick up choreography, attitude, class attendance, etc.) Dancers for Solos, Duos, Trios and Small Groups will be selected from the auditions. Your dancer may be selected for a group that is a different age and/or skill level than what they are currently enrolled in. Previous participation on the Competition Team or participation in this year s auditions does not guarantee your dancer will be selected for the team. Each dancer has their own unique talents and abilities. If your child is not selected for the Competition Team, it does not mean they are not a talented dancer; they simply may not be ready at this time. Encourage them to continue their training and try again next year. Please prepare your child for the audition process and for any results they may receive. The decision of the judges is final. Please be mindful of your commitment when completing the audition application. Once you sign up for scheduled audition classes and subsequent dances (i.e. total dances you are willing to accept), you are committing, if chosen, to any dances for which you may be selected. Dancers that do not uphold their entire commitment from the audition application will be removed from the team. Students selected for the Competition Team will be required to fulfill all class pre-requisites in order to participate. Consistent attendance, excellent work ethic, respectful behavior to instructors and fellow students and lots of hard work will be necessary to have a successful team. We want this to be a fun and rewarding experience for everyone! There will be a Parent Question & Answer meeting on Wednesday, August 26 th at 6:30pm (Back patio of Roosevelt location) to answer any questions or concerns you have about the auditions or the Competition Season. If you are unable to attend the meeting, please send your questions with someone who can relay the information you need. All audition results will be posted on the CDC website at no later than Saturday, September 20 th, Results will be posted in the Downloads section of our website. Please be respectful of CDC instructors time at the studio and refrain from asking questions about the Competition Team during or in between dance classes. Questions or concerns regarding the audition process should be asked at the parent question & answer meeting or through studio . GOOD LUCK AT AUDITIONS!!

Competition Team Information & Guidelines The purpose of the Competition Program at the Carlsbad Dance Centre is to provide an enrichment program for those selected students who excel in dance and have demonstrated a sincere desire to commit themselves to furthering their level of achievement in dance. Students who exhibit the skill level, performance quality, attitude and dedication are selected for specialized professional training beyond the basic curriculum. Participation in a Competition Program can be a positive and motivating experience that will provide new opportunities and encourage students to develop their abilities to their fullest potential. In order to maintain the integrity of our Competition Program and provide a positive, fun and exciting experience for our dancers, the following Criteria, Requirements and Commitment Policy has been established. We ask that you read these requirements carefully in order to fully understand the commitment you are making to the Competition Team. ATTENDANCE Regular attendance is mandatory for weekly technique classes, as well as, competition rehearsals. Effective learning and progression cannot take place with the absence of participating members. Any student missing an excessive amount of weekly technique classes will be subject to dismissal from the team. The Competition Team rehearsal attendance policy is as follows: Between October - December Between January - June Saturday Rehearsals 1 unexcused 1 unexcused Weekday Rehearsals 2 unexcused 1 unexcused Elite Rehearsals None None * Dancers are not allowed to miss any Nationals rehearsals. Team members are not allowed to miss 2 consecutive rehearsals (due to illness and unexcused miss) OR miss the rehearsal the week of a competition or performance. Any of the above scenarios is cause for immediate dismissal from that dance, for the duration of the season. Should a dancer be removed from a single dance or the Competition Team due to any team policy violation, any and all fees paid up to that date are non-refundable and non-transferable. Dancers are strongly discouraged from using their 1 unexcused absence the rehearsal right before Thanksgiving or Spring Break. The rehearsal right before Winter Break is mandatory for all dancers (12/20/14). Dancers may not use their 1 unexcused absence on this date. Excused absences are as follows: Illness (except the common cold), select mandatory school events (with Miss Jana s approval only), and family emergencies are considered excused absences. If a dancer has an injury, they are still required to attend in order to observe choreography and any changes made to their dance. It is very important to alert the instructor when your child will miss a rehearsal. If it is a planned absence (i.e. vacation, mandatory school event, etc) you must the instructor 2 weeks in advance using studio address. If the absence is unexpected (i.e. illness, family emergency) please do your best to get the information to your instructor and/or studio office ASAP. An on the day of event may not make it to your instructor before lesson time.

It is the students responsibility to be current with choreography if they should miss a rehearsal. Instructors do not re-teach choreography for dancers who have missed a rehearsal. PRE-REQUISITE CLASSES All dancers are required to take Ballet classes at Carlsbad Dance Centre in order to be eligible to compete. Students who are only competing in a Hip-Hop number are exempt from this policy. In general, the pre-requisites are as follows: If competing in: TAP JAZZ LYRICAL HIP HOP Must be enrolled in: 2 Tap Classes 2 Ballet Classes 2 Jazz Classes 2 Ballet Classes 1 Leaps & Turns (* Some levels) 1 Lyrical Class 2 Ballet Classes 1 Hip Hop Class (The Elite level has different class requirements and most of those dancers know what they are. If you are unsure or need some clarification, please contact Miss Abbie or Miss Jana.) Once audition results are posted, a CDC competition staff member will be contacting you about whether you need to change your child s required weekly classes. Many dancers will be asked to stay in their current classes and will not need to enroll in T classes for their requirements. ELIGIBILITY Students competing for Carlsbad Dance Centre must compete solely for our team. As you can imagine, competing for more than one studio would be a conflict of interest and cause some extreme scheduling problems. In addition, no dancer will be allowed to compete in a competition other than those listed on the Competition Schedule, regardless if they are using their CDC competition routine or another choreographed dance. COSTUMES Competition costumes may be ordered through catalogs or custom made by a local seamstress. Your competition instructor will determine the costumes origin. These costumes require deposits with a balance due some time in March Please be aware that costumes for competition dances tend to cost between $150 - $250 each, depending on the style. Additional costs may be incurred after initial purchase for special shoes, extra accessories, rhinestones or other items the instructor chooses. TEAM JERSEYS Competition Team jerseys are mandatory for all team members. The team jerseys will be worn to all competitions, between dances and during award ceremonies. An order form for jerseys will be distributed at the mandatory parent meetings with auditions. (~$85) MAKE-UP In order to ensure consistency in appearance on stage, special competition make-up is required. We will invite a MAC consultant to meet with the members of the Competition Team to provide instruction on how to apply competition make-up. A Make-Up Order Form will be provided at a later date. (~$120) ACCESSORIES Special accessories will be required for each dancer. Earrings will be purchased through the studio at a cost of approximately $ $ False eyelashes are required for all dancers who compete in level T1 and above.

MASTER CLASSES There are no master classes required for the competition team this year. We will be distributing a list of suggested workshops or conventions that would be good optional events for your child. These are encouraged only for dancers that don t have rehearsals on those days. A student cannot take an unexcused absence from competition rehearsal to attend any of these conventions. But if the student is available, we encourage you to inquire with the convention company about their 1 day rates. NATIONALS (NEW) Star Systems Nationals (Las Vegas) and Next Level (San Diego) are both mandatory events for the Competition Season. A National Competition is an integral part of a team s growth and is an exciting and rewarding experience for all. The team will complete its final regional competition by May 3 rd. We will continue all regular competition rehearsals till Recital weekend. There will be no competition rehearsals for anyone from Post-Recital Break through June 16 th. We will then have concentrated Nationals Rehearsals on: Wednesday, June 17 th (9am 3pm) * Plan to work around High Tech High/San Marcos schedules Thursday, June 18 th (9am 3pm) Friday, June 19 th (9am 3pm) Saturday, June 20 th (9am 5pm) Dancers are not allowed to miss any Nationals Rehearsals. Because these Nationals are back to back, there will be no need to rehearse dances in between Nationals events. DIRECTOR/INSTRUCTOR CONTACT INFORMATION All communication with CDC instructors should be handled through the teacher s direct address. If you have been given an instructor's cell phone number for private lesson purposes, please be considerate and do not share the number with other parents or dancers. Use this number only for scheduling private lessons or in case of an emergency event. Please see CDC website for competition teacher s. PARENT SUPPORT Parental support is very much appreciated by all the teachers. It is important that we respect all teacher decisions regarding costumes, choreography, student coaching, score sheets, etc. Carlsbad Dance Centre staff will handle all communication between competition personnel and our studio. Occasionally parents are asked to assist the instructor with something outside of class. Please do not assume that this gives the child special allowances. A child s placement in our program is based only on merit and ability. Parents are responsible for their student at all times prior to and after their performance on stage. Instructors are working with other students and cannot be responsible for students who are not dancing. Parents are not permitted backstage at competitions, unless requested by your instructor. OUTSIDE PERFORMANCES We realize that dancers have performance opportunities outside of Carlsbad Dance Centre (i.e. school talent shows, talent showcases, etc.). However, please check with Miss Jana prior to committing to a performance outside of Carlsbad Dance Centre to insure that there is no conflict. All outside performances must also be approved by the choreographer/instructor of the dance to be performed. In addition, no dancer will be allowed to compete in a competition other than those listed on the CDC Competition Schedule, regardless if they are using their CDC competition routine or another choreographed dance.

Competition Fees & Due Dates TEAM MEMBERSHIP FEE There will be a $60.00 membership fee to participate on the Competition Team. This fee is applied toward administration costs of managing the competitions, entries, etc. It is also used towards team events. This fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. CREDIT CARD ON FILE (NEW): As a member of our competition team, your tuition account must be kept current. The long standing policy at CDC has always been that tuition must be kept current in order to participate in extra programs at the studio. In order to avoid complications and ensure all accounts are kept current, all members of the competition team will be required to have a valid credit card on file. We understand that many of you still like to pay by cash or check. We are certainly happy to accept those forms of payment on or before the due date. The credit card on file will only be used if the other payment has not been made by the due date. If for some reason the card doesn t go through, it will be the same as a non-payment which may result in removal from the team. 8 CDC Competition Philosophy Taking the Healthy Approach to Dance Competitions Competition is healthy; but as dance agent Tony Selznick says, It s healthy only if your self-esteem is not connected to your score and if you re dancing for the right reasons. In order to become a better artist, you must always strive to look at the big picture. So, what s the big picture? Part of the big picture is to remember that dance is an art form, not a football game. There are no winners and losers like in a sport or a game. If you think competitions are about awards and medals, then you re not dancing for the right reasons. Don Mirault (Renowned dancer/choreographer) Competition requires special teachers, special students, and special parents. It requires time, talent, dedication, and regard for each other as team members. Our combined positive attitude guarantees success. Winning is everything, when you define winning as doing your personal best. Dancers should compete against themselves and not be critical of others. This means concentrating on improving their own capabilities and growing as a dancer. As we practice, travel to competitions, meet new friends and grow together, remember to show respect for ourselves and for others by always being supportive of our fellow dancers, parents and teachers. Teams whose members support one another always stand out as leaders. We all want to strive at bringing out the best in all our student s (child s) talents. In turn we build their self-image and develop perseverance skills. Having the feeling of achievement gives students the confidence to attack other challenges in the future. The feeling of accomplishment alone is worth more than any trophy or medal! We need to measure our achievements according to ourselves and not others. Carlsbad Dance Centre is dedicated to making this elite program a positive experience for all. We are very proud of all of our students and appreciate all our wonderful families. Quality is not an Act. It is a Habit. - Aristotle Practice it like you perform it! - Miss Jana
