April 2017 Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s): Your daughter/son is interested in trying out for the Junior Varsity or Varsity Cheerleading Squad(s). If your daughter/son is chosen to represent Buffalo Grove High School as a member of the squad, it will not only be an honor, but also a major commitment. The responsibilities are numerous and MUST be fully understood in advance. This packet is designed to provide you with a comprehensive list of policies, procedures, and expectations. It is important to realize that practice and game schedules are typically set well in advance and should therefore be considered MANDATORY. Schedule changes not in control of the cheerleading coaching staff will be made known to squad members as soon as possible. Becoming a cheerleader requires a substantial financial commitment. In order to offset some of these costs, all squad members will be required to participate in fundraising activities; i.e.-car washes, concessions, camps and clinics, etc., and any other events deemed necessary for the program. Members of both Cheerleading Squads will be responsible for (not limited to) the purchase of all cheerleading equipment, shoes, clothes, camps and clinics. This is outlined in the cheer packet. As a member of the squad, your daughter/son will be responsible for maintaining a good academic record. This is monitored on a weekly basis in accordance with BGHS & IHSA guidelines. All members are required to follow the rules set forth in the Cheerleading Contract and the Student Handbook/Athletic Code. BGHS Cheerleading squads follow IHSA rules and those set forth in the NFHS Spirit rules book. Please review the requirements listed in this packet with your daughter/son. Should you agree to make the commitment, please sign the attached permission form and have your daughter/son bring this signed form to the clinic. Please contact Mr. Jeffrey Siegal, at jeffrey.siegal@d214.org with any questions. We welcome you to our successful cheerleading program and hope your son/daughter will enjoy the experience as the newest members of our cheerleading family.
BGHS Cheerleading Tryout Packet Thank you for your interest in Buffalo Grove High School Cheerleading. Cheerleading at Buffalo Grove is a serious commitment and is not to be taken lightly. Please make sure that you review all the rules and expectations. Please start conditioning and working on tumbling now, as it will be a lot in one day. If you have questions, please make sure that you ask at the first night of clinics. This is a great sport to become involved in. Do not be overwhelmed or afraid to try out. We wish you the best and thanks for choosing to be part of a championship program. If you have a problem with expenses, do not let this stop you from trying out. Please contact Coach Siegal with this. ** If you participate in a spring sport that conflicts with clinics and/or tryouts, please contact Jeff Siegal at jeffrey.siegal@d214.org
Expectations and Regulations Buffalo Grove High School Cheerleading ACADEMICS The BGHS Cheerleading program expects academics to be each participant s first priority. BGHS cheerleaders are expected to follow the BGHS rules for eligibility set forth by the IHSA. ATTENDANCE Attendance at all practices, games, competitions, fundraisers, and community events are mandatory. The rule is simple -1,2,3 = O U T. A participant who misses three (3) times during the school year may be dismissed from the squad for the remainder of the season. (Work is not excused and please try not to schedule doctors appointments during practices and games,) Excessive absences, sitting out for any reason, or missing more than two games in a season could result in removal from the program. If a cheerleader is absent from the practice before a game they will be required to sit out that game and possibly the next game. If a participant is absent from school on a practice or game day, she/he may not participate in any event. In the case of an extended illness, a parent/guardian must contact the coach. It is the responsibility of each girl/boy to report directly to her/his coach any illness or injury that would result in a missed game or practice. You must the coach and head coach to let them know you are sick. Schedules will be given out at the beginning of the season. However, cheerleaders will need to be flexible due to the need to add or change practices due to facilities, games, weather, competitions, pep assemblies, homecoming, and before school starts. Sports or activities that are not sponsored through BGHS cannot replace a BGHS Cheerleading event, practice, game, camp and/or any cheerleading function. Any personal commitments, such as, vacations, doctor appointments, work, or participation in a club sport during the season are not considered as an excuse for missing practice. Cheering games is the same as competing at a competition. You cannot miss. Excuses such as a family dinner, party or going skiing will not work. If you miss a game, you will be suspended and could be removed from the program. JV and Varsity Cheerleaders will perform at the Buffalo Grove Days Parade on Labor Day Weekend. If you want to be a Competitive Cheerleader, please note that you will have practice scheduled during Thanksgiving and Winter Break. You will not be allowed to miss any of those practices. This is for the competitive teams.
ATTIRE: AT ALL PRACTICES AND GAMES: NO JEWELRY including watches, necklaces, rings, earrings, and other pierced items NO GLITTER including lotions, make-up etc. containing glitter NO NAIL POLISH Nails should be trimmed to an athletic length (no acrylics: this goes for any school dances, etc), not beyond the fingertips, to prevent injury. NO GUM is allowed during practices or games NO CELL PHONES AND NO TEXTING DURING PRACTICES, AND OR GAMES! And any additional IHSA mandated rules Cheerleading Shoes, socks, shorts, t-shirt and a bow must be worn at ALL practices. PRACTICES: Practices are closed. Parents cannot be at practice. Proper attire for practice is: T-shirt, shorts (with briefs), bow, and cheer shoes. They must also have their own water bottle. Pants are not allowed to be worn at practice. Girls must have their hair pulled back and off their face. All participants are expected to be in practice attire and ready to begin at the designated practice time. If a cheerleader is late to practice for academic reasons they must bring a pass/note from their teacher. If you miss practice the week of a game or a competition, you will not be able to participate. GAMES Proper uniform for all games is: Cheerleading uniform, hugger, briefs/boy shorts, cheer shoes, appropriate socks, hair bow, and game face. Girls must have hair up and off of your face. Guys must be clean-shaven and their hair must be clean cut. Warmups should be worn to and from games during cooler weather. No uniform skirt may be worn over warm-up pants. Flip-flops, boots and non-cheerleading shoes are never to be worn with the uniform. T-shirts are never to be worn over the uniform. Jewelry of any kind can never be worn. No gum is allowed. Each cheerleader is responsible for the proper care of his/her uniform. Each cheerleader will be fully responsible for the replacement of any uniform in his/her care that becomes damaged or lost. All cheerleaders should wear their BGHS Cheerleading uniform with pride on game days (except guys) and at all regular season games and tournament games (unless otherwise specified by the coach). If you are sitting out due to non co-curricular reasons, you will sit out in full uniform. (This could be warm-ups, shirt & shorts, and/or uniform; it is up to the coach s discretion.) TRANSPORTATION Cheerleaders must ride the athletic bus to and from events. They must be in full uniform or warm-up to travel in. We do not travel to any cheerleading function in street clothes. If they do not have on the proper attire, they will be sent home.
ATTITUDE In order to achieve maximum success as a squad, each individual must demonstrate a good work ethic and be willing to work for the good of the squad. Respect for other squad members and the coaching staff is imperative. The same is asked of parents towards other kids on the team and the coaching staff. Negative behavior may result in suspension from participation in one or more games or dismissal from the squad. Parent participation is appreciated. Decisions about coaching and program management are solely the responsibility of the coaching staff. We ask that the parents support and adhere to the decisions made by the coaching staff. If you have a concern please contact the head coach. Each participant will sign and adhere to the BGHS Cheerleading Expectations & Regulations. ATHLETICS Cheerleading is a demanding activity and requires the same physical training and dedication as any other sport. BGHS cheerleaders are expected to maintain physical fitness through full participation in all warm-up and conditioning activities. Like other sports, the possibility of injury is present in cheerleading. Any injury occurring during practice or game is to be reported to the coach or athletic trainer immediately. Parent(s)/guardian(s) will be contacted. COMMUNICATION If a cheerleader is sick or absent for any reason, they must contact their coach via by 1:00 pm. Failure to inform the coaching staff of any absences could result in sitting out a game(s), event(s), and/or dismissal from the squad. Practices, Games and or Competitions are NOT OPTIONS. Letting the coach know an hour before a game or right before practice is not acceptable. All correspondences and s to cheerleaders, staff, parents, and third parties will come from the coaching staff, not parents. Any cheerleader involved in another school activity must inform the Head Coach. All parent concerns should be directed to the Head Coach. EXPECTATIONS Cheerleaders must have a current physical and athletic permit on record with the Athletic Office by August 15. Cheerleaders must sign off on the Co-Curricular Code Sheet. The BGHS Co-curricular code will be strictly enforced. All cheerleaders must register for the Buffalo Grove Cheer Camp through the Summer Athletic Program by May 20 to avoid a late fee. This is done on line and payment is made to BGHS. During the game all squad members are required to sit in together when not cheering.

BGHS CHEERLEADING PROGRAM All JV and Varsity Cheerleaders must participate in sideline cheerleading for football and basketball season. The only exceptions to this would be: Freshman or Sophomore Girl Guys can be on a fall sport and be a cheerleader for the Winter Season If you have permission from the Head Coach. Guys can be on a fall sport and be a cheerleader for the Winter Season If you were on the team the year before, it does not guarantee you a spot the following year. A veteran can be cut, or a person who is on Varsity can be placed on JV for the following year.. The IHSA states that a cheerleader is not permitted to participate on an all-star team or compete on an all-star team during the competitive cheerleading season. Cheerleaders may participate in an all-star program in the pre and post season that is coached by Coach Siegal, in order to monitor participation and adhere to the IHSA guidelines. All cheerleaders must sign up and take an approved tumbling class. Varsity cheerleaders are expected to be able to perform tumbling skills. If this is not followed, they may be moved down to the Junior Varsity level. Both teams will take team tumbling at least once a week. A cheerleader may be moved FROM VARSITY TO JV OR JV TO VARSITY at the coaching staff s discretion at any time. If a cheerleader does not know the material or maintain the required skills (i.e.-tumbling, stunting), they may be removed from an upcoming event or possibly the program. We will continue to take guys and girls on the team after tryouts have occurred until all spots have been filled. If you do not make the team in the spring, you can try out for the Winter Season, at the end of October. Cheerleaders cannot try out for Orchesis, and/or Poms after they have made cheerleading. If you quit, you cannot try out for these groups nor can you join another sport in season (fall/winter). ALL CHEERLEADERS MAY PARTICIPATE IN ANY SPORT/ACTIVITY IN THE SPRING.
Varsity and JV Competitive Squad The Varsity competitive squad will be comprised of both male and female cheerleaders. With regard to the amount of competitive cheerleaders, we will adhere to the IHSA guideline, which currently states a maximum of 24 cheerleaders. Of theses 24 athletes, a maximum of 20 athletes may compete with the possibility of carrying a maximum of 4 alternates. Only the members of the JV and Varsity competitive squad may be eligible to receive an athletic award of participation. The JV Competitive Team will have anywhere from girls and guys on there. They will do 3-4 competitions during the Winter Season. JV will compete in the month of December and possibly one in January. In order to receive an athletic award for participation on the JV and or Varsity competitive squad, an individual must have: -Completed the season on the JV and or Varsity Competitive Team and Varsity Sideline Winter Season. -Participated in the JV and or Varsity Competitive Season on the floor, or as an alternate, or as the team manager. Prices are on the athletic website and are not included on the above camps. All summer practices are highly encouraged. There will be practices every day the 7 days before school starts. These are mandatory and not an option. We use the summer to get ready for the fall and winter season. If you are in another sport, we will work around your schedule. We will NOT work around work schedules. We will not have practices during the summer on Friday, Saturday and Sunday unless we are at a camp (non BG Athletic Camp) and/or clinic.
