1 OLMSTED FALLS HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES AND CLUBS, 2008 ACADEMIC TEAM ART CLUB Meetings Mrs. Rhonna Smith October May Twice a week after school November through April and once a week the rest of the year. Ms. Burnside First week of One week before end of school year Weekly Thursdays 3 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. in Room W4 There is no fee. You do not need to be in art class to be a member. Field trips, guest speakers, community and school service performed. Meetings are not announced. Please feel free to attend any Thursday. An art project or medium will be offered at most meetings. Students may work on this project, a project from class, or experiment with media of their choice. ATHLETIC TRAINERS Mr. Dave Godfray, Mrs. Angie Douglas July, 2008 June, 2009 After school (3 6:15 p.m.) This select group assists the adult licensed athletic trainers in taking care of our student athletes. They are responsible for basic first aid and emergency response, preventive padding and taping, and additional duties as assigned by their supervising athletic trainer. Listen to P.A. announcements in February for sign-up or speak with a current student athletic aide. BAND (MARCHING BAND, PEP BAND, JAZZ BAND) Mr. Berry August End of school year Varies with each ensemble Any student wishing to sign up for an instrumental course must see their grade level counselor. Mandatory band camp begins two weeks prior to the start of school. Exceptions are granted after meeting with the band director. Students must be enrolled in concert band to be a member of the marching band. Band members must participate in marching band to be a member of the concert band. Jazz Ensemble consists of a select group of musicians and meets in class daily. Stage Band is an ensemble that meets after school once marching band is completed one day a week. Students of all musical abilities are welcome. The Bulldog Pep Band meets after school and plays for various sporting and public events. The music program is a wonderful way to express inner talent and creativity. Marching Band is also a way to meet new people and show your Bulldog Pride. Marching Band, Pep Band, and Stage Band do not require auditions. ACTIVITIES CLUBS/LIST

2 BOWLING TEAM Mr. Barbee Middle of November Early March Announcements during first week of school will inform students of procedures and schedule 2 The team competes in the Greater Cleveland Interscholastic League. Practice is once a week after school on Thursday, and league matches are on Saturday mornings. Other matches outside of league play may be arranged with schools on an individual match basis. Practices are held on a voluntary basis beginning in until the official opening of the season. Candidates for the team do not need their own equipment. Cost for practice and competition is approximately $13 per week. CHEERLEADING Coaches: Mrs. Bujdos August April Tuesday: Freshmen, J.V., & Varsity 7 8:30 p.m. Competition Sundays, 6:30 8 p.m. Tryouts are in the early spring each year. Supervised practice sessions are held each year prior to tryouts. Anyone may try out and may choose to participate on one or two squads. In addition, girls may participate on the competition squad (a separate tryout is held for this squad). Girls can participate in a sport and cheer during the opposite season. CHOIR Mrs. Crandall First day of school Last day of school Class period during the school day Sign up for choir through your counselor. Audition necessary for Chorale and Golden Expressions. Contact Mrs. Crandall to audition. No audition necessary for Concert Choir, Treble Choir, Barbershop Quartet, or Men s Ensemble. CLASS OFFICERS Freshman Sophomore Junior Senior Mr. Von Gunten, Mrs. Capuano, Mrs. Laut Class officer elections are held in the fall of the school year. Contact class advisor for details.

3 3 DRILL TEAM Tryouts: Mrs. Topolski Two weeks prior to start of school Conclusion of marching band season Spring Daily during football season after school and Tuesday and Thursday evenings 6 8 p.m. Also, two weeks during the summer for camp. FAMILY, COMMUNITY, AND CAREER LEADERS OF AMERICA (FCCLA) Mrs. Davis Third week of school Last week of school During class periods as needed This club is for students interested in participating in activities that focus on community involvement. Some of our projects include the Cancer Quilt project for Moll Cancer Center, Denim Day for Breast Cancer Awareness, toiletry kids for battered women/homeless shelters, and recycling cans for burn victims. Any student enrolled in a Family & Consumer Science class is invited to be part of this school activity. FORENSIC CLUB Mr. Mercer October March Twice a week, including Saturdays See Mr. Mercer if interested. This is the Speech and Debate Club. We have weekly competition in Speech, Debate, and Acting. Participants may earn membership in the National Forensic League and other honors. INTERNATIONAL AND MULTICULTURAL CLUB Mrs. Soto-Kacik, Mrs. Whitney May Approximately two meetings each month after school Your participation and interest will help you learn about other countries and the opportunities for becoming an exchange student yourself. Also, you will have the opportunity to help our foreign exchange students adjust to OFHS. INTRAMURALS When: Mr. Ryan Winter Quarter Varies with each activity. See Mr. Ryan if interested.

4 4 KEY CLUB Mrs. Hughes, Mr. May Middle of Mid-May Twice a month, mandatory One must fill out an application during the membership drive and turn it in for evaluation. Dues must be paid. LINK CREW Mr. Kho, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Krakowiak, Mr. August Second week of August As needed Link Crew is a freshman transition program where junior and senior students help mentor OFHS freshmen. Juniors and seniors are selected by a nomination process and are invited to participate in leadership training activities throughout the year. Link leaders will meet 3 days before school starts to plan the orientation program for all freshmen. Attendance at these meetings is required. MASQUERS Rehearsals: Mr. Floriano April Varies with needs of the play Audition for a play or work backstage on sets, lights, costumes, makeup, or sound. Masquers usually perform two shows per year, a play in the fall and a musical in the spring. Auditions are posted and are open to all students. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Mr. Von Gunten, Mrs. Sedlay, Mrs. Wendling 4 5 times a year Students are eligible for selection at the end of the first semester of their junior year. Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher are eligible to make application. Selection is based on the criteria of scholarship, leadership, character, and citizenship. POLAR BEAR CLUB Mr. Novotny After Christmas break Beginning of March 2 3 days per week This club is a pre-season sport conditioning program for all athletes. Athletes specifically interested in participating in track and who are not in a winter sport should definitely join.

5 5 SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Mrs. Davis, Ms. Meinhardt 3 rd week of school Last week of school First Thursday of every month during homeroom in the library media center Any student is welcome to be a part of SADD. This group promotes a healthy lifestyle through positive choices in school and community activities. SADD sponsored activities include Red Ribbon Week, smoking prevention programs, leadership training, freshman presentations, Prom Promise, and social and fund-raising activities. SKI CLUB Ms. Langenderfer November March Wednesday evenings at Brandywine. Leave from high school at 5 p.m., return to high school at 10:30 p.m. Sign up with advisor, fill out forms, and pay fees. STUDENT COUNCIL Mr. Gibeaut First two weeks of school End of school year Wednesdays, 7:40 a.m., and as needed throughout the year Elections held among interested candidates. Membership involves setting up, conducting, and cleanup of dances. Regular attendance at monthly meetings is required. Assist with Homecoming festivities. Participate in philanthropic and other special events as determined by student input.
