Sept 30, 2016 An online student publication of Melissa Middle School HOMECOMING Birdie shows his school pride. Photo by Brianne Finnell MMS Celebrates Homecoming Traditions By Clency Richardson Homecoming was a tremendous experience for a lot of our new Cardinals. A large portion of the middle school students enjoyed showing their spirit. Homecoming is a time for Melissa Cardinals to show their pride at the games. Although this time is primarily about honoring students, the teachers are also appreciated as well. Many students can be found smiling and laughing as spirits are high throughout the week. The amazing Cardinal Band announced their school spirit through music. --Continued on page 9 The 8th graders supports the 8th grade football team. Photo By Mr. Tyner Mrs. Webb showing her inner Hulk. 3 Superheroes Save the Day With Various Superpowers Article by Astrid Easton Captain America, aka Mrs. Eichel, flies in the classroom, and demonstrates her super power. Photo By Sydney Enoch Comic book characters gained a new superpower last Tuesday, the power to jump out of the pages! Flooding the hallways of MMS were characters such as Captain America, Batman, The Flash, and others. The students and staff took turns in dressing up as their favorite superheroes for the second day of homecoming. Mrs. Achimon is a marvel. Photo by Kate McMinn Cat Woman protects her kittens in class. Photo By Sydney Enoch Teachers and students model their excellent superpowers in the hallway. Photo By Kate McMinn
Teachers and Students Turn Wacky on Wednesday By Caylen Underwood & Liberty Davis Forget fashion. On Wednesday, MMS Cardinals raided their closets for what not to wear. They dressed in anything that didn't match. These wacky participants proudly walked the halls of the school. Most people were dressed head to toe in wacky clothes. I like Wacky Wednesday because I get to look and act crazy, Kate McMinn stated. Overall, many students and staff enjoyed this day. Students pose for a wacky photo during Homecoming Spirit Week. Photo by Astrid Easton Mrs. Duguid and her students demonstrate how crazy they can be. Photo By Sydney Enoch MMS ladies pose for a fashionably weird Homecoming dress up day.. 5 The Homecoming Dream
Seeing Double: Friends Pair up for Twin Day By Mya DeLeon, Skyler Harman Edited by Melanie Petersen MMS students pose for a Twin Day picture. Photo by Kenzie Frasier Twins arrived thursday looking so alike we couldn't tell who was who. Twin Day is a day in homecoming week when you are supposed to wear matching clothes with a friend. Many students participated in this homecoming week event this year, leading to some fun costumes. Many students enjoy Twin Day to show their homecoming spirit. This is only one of the many exciting events that happened during homecoming week. Many people would argue that this is the most entertaining day, as cooperating with friends to become twins can become interesting. Some went to great lengths choosing to wear more extreme fashion choices. Whether or not you dressed up, everyone had a blast seeing the complementing attires. It was double the fun. Two are better than one for Twin Day. Photo By Sydney Enoch
By Neemah Mureithi Cardinal Day topped off the MMS homecoming week. This tradition is for Melissa students to show school pride by wearing school colors of mums and t-shirts. I think it s a good thing to show spirit, because it shows that students can be respectful and responsible, Brianne Finnell said. For many, this experience proved to be exciting an exciting time on campus. 8 Students Share Their Favorite Dress Up Day By: Chau Hua and Annemarie Miller Photos by Chau Hua I liked Twin Day because I got to dress up with my best friends. -Savanna Smith I like the Book Character Day because I like to read. - Ashley Vasquez I liked Twin Day because it was fun. -Natalie Somers I liked Spirit Day because I got to show how much I like going to this school. -Clency Richardson I liked Wacky Wednesday because people don t have to match. -Kate Fletcher I like Twin Day because I get to look like my friends. -Mackenzie Wilkie
Homecoming Promotes School Pride Throughout Campus and Community --Cont. from Page 1 They proudly played the fight song with loud horns and banging drums. Although the high school football team lost, the well loved boys played with heart. The chants of Red Red from cheerleaders and fans, the football pads clashing, and the smell of hot dogs coming from the concession stand, all contributed to the homecoming experience. Many students wore mums to show their Cardinal spirit as well. So, here s some advice: come to next year s homecoming. Tune in to see MYO s Cats on October 7 and October 8 at Cox Theater in Plano.
